STEWARDSHIP MESSAGE

March 3rd –8th Sunday in Ordinary Time “ A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit.” (Luke 6:43) Are you using your God-given gifts in the way God intended? Do you compare yourself to others and complain about what you don’t have instead of being thankful for what you do have? God gives each of us unique gifts and a unique plan. Listen to how God is calling you to use your gifts, to bear good fruit, for the glo-ry of His Name.

THANK YOU NOTE

Thank you all so much for the Christmas dona-tion of awesome stuff for Birthright!

Birthright of Cape Girardeau wishes to thank all of you for your generosity over the Christ-mas Season. I wish you could see the grati-tude in the faces of our moms when we gift them with the items you donated to us, for them. It takes a community to help raise a child and we are eternally grateful that you are that community!

Blessings to you all!

LENT 2019

“A time for love, sacrifice, prayer, and conversion”

DOES THE BIBLE SAY ANYTHING ABOUT ASH WEDNESDAY?

While the Bible does not mention the celebra-tion of Ash Wednesday or command its prac-tice, the Bible does mention ashes and dust in several places. The use of ashes in the Old Testament onward symbolized mourning, re-pentance, and the frailty of humanity.

1. “My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you. Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.” —Job 42:5-6

2. “All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return.” —Ecclesiastes 3:20

3. “By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” —Genesis 3:19.

4. “So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes.” —Daniel 9:3

5. “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Beth-saida! For if the miracles that were per-formed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.” —Matthew 11:21

STATION OF THE CROOS

Every Thursday of Lent at 6:00 p.m.

Join us in prayer and meditation

St. Eustachius Portageville, MO. March 3rd, 2019. Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time.

DID YOU KNOW?

Ash Wednesday "was ac-cepted into the beliefs of the Catholic Church at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. The council also set-

tled upon the 40-day fast period as the standard length to celebrate Lent.

LENT begins with Ash Wednesday

A fasting day of prayer. No meat of any kind (chicken, beef, pork, lamb, etc,)

Good actions, all you can!

Prayer? Yes! A lot of prayer that leads you to

conversion and get closer to Jesus.

ASH WEDNESDAY PRAYER

Lord, Holy One, have mercy on us. We confess our sins to you. We have fallen short of your glory and without your mercy and grace, we would be dust. We repent now. Lord, as we en-ter into this Lenten season, be near to us. Help us, by your Holy Spirit, to feel right con-viction and repentance for our sin. Help us, by your Spirit, to have the strength to overcome the enemy.

Thank you, Lord, that Easter is coming! Death has no sting, no victory, because of Jesus! Glory and honor and praise to His name! Thank you for rescuing us. Help us keep both the weight and the joy of this season in our hearts and we move through the next several weeks. Help us bear the good fruit of your Spirit.

Thank you that the ashes on our forehead do not symbolize our ultimate reality. From dust we might have been formed, but our bodies, our spirits, ourselves, await beautiful redemp-tion and the restoration of all things. Help us long and look forward to that day, and let it come quickly, Lord Jesus. Amen.

The purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer for Easter through prayer, doing penance, mortifying the flesh, repentance of sins, almsgiving, and self-denial.
