Letter From The President Littleton Police Citizen Academy Alumni Association Newsletter 4th Quarter, 2011 Issue #43 1 Dear Members, With the sudden resignation of Ron Griffith due to illness, I am humbled and honored to step forward as the incoming President. Ron’s thoughtfulness and consistency will be truly missed, and we wish him a speedy recovery. I wish to express my gratitude to Rich for his leadership and firm hand during the past exciting year. He continued to build on a firm foundation laid by Tony and Kay, ensuring a bright future lies ahead for the Alumni Association. Rich, thank you! It’s comforting to know you will be available to help as Past President. The board of directors is excited to welcome new board members Leisa Sacry as Secretary, Kevin Cunningham as Director of Media, John Thornton as President-Elect and Joe Hanson, President. We are very fortunate for the continuing service of Janet Simpson as Volunteer Coordinator, Mickey Kempf as Director of Training and Woody Laughlin as our Registered Agent. There was only one Littleton Police Citizens Academy for 2011 with Class 26 graduating on November 17. At least two in the class of 19 students expressed interest in joining the LPCAAA prior to graduation and we look forward to more signing up. To each of the new members, we extend an official welcome to the Alumni Association! And to our current members, please offer a personal welcome to the new Alumni when they attend our monthly meeting. Trick-or-Treat Street at Aspen Grove was not only a huge success; it may have been impossible without the assistance of the Alumni. Due to budget cutbacks resulting in a reduction of Littleton Police presence at the event, our group was pressed into service for traffic control and responded with professionalism and enthusiasm. For all the volunteers working traffic and handing out candy, we offer a hearty Thank You. Special thanks to Janet for her tireless efforts in organizing our group! Although this letter is written before the Candlelight Walk scheduled for the day after Thanksgiving, the Alumni once again figures prominently in the LPD operations plan for the evening with more than 30 volunteers expected to man duty stations. Alumni personnel will assist in traffic control before and after the event, and are instrumental in crowd control as they escort Santa’s sleigh down Main Street. Please bring a snack to share, and a BIG appetite, to the December 1 members meeting featuring our traditional potluck. Good food, good conversation and great company are guaranteed! I wish each and every member a happy and safe Holiday Season. Be thankful for all that we have, helping those that are less fortunate. www.LPCAAA.org Joe Hanson [email protected]

Dear Members,

With the sudden resignation of Ron Griffith due to illness, I am humbled and honored to step forward as the incoming President. Ron’s thoughtfulness and consistency will be truly missed, and we wish him a speedy recovery.

I wish to express my gratitude to Rich for his leadership and firm hand during the past exciting year. It’s comforting to know you will be available to help as Past President.

I was recently elected as LPCAAA’s new Media Director. Hopefully, I will perform my new duties as well as Sue Hanson has done for the past few years. As someone who has been working with computers for many years, I always need to tweak things. There are already some changes to the website, and more are coming.

lpcaaa.org – Our Website

In addition to the “Upcoming Events” page, events are also shown in a calendar. You can choose a monthly, weekly, or daily view of our events. Click a calendar entry to get more information about an event. Follow the “map” link if you need directions to the event. These tools are provided by Google. If you already use Google Calendars, you can copy the event details, or link the LPCAAA calendar to your own calendar.

The “Links” page has also been updated. New links include the City’s media releases as well as agencies & organizations who have visited us. More content, including photo galleries from previous years, will be added over the next few weeks. A photo gallery for the Candle Light Walk has already been added. If you’d like to share your LPCAAA photographs, email them to me. For more details, or suggestions for web content, please send an email to [email protected].

Dear Alumni,

By the time you read this, the Candlelight Walk will be over. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered again this year to help us bring Christmas lights and Santa to the holidays.

As we end the year and look forward to next year, we have a number of exciting

changes. We have reorganized the department, moving to two Division Chiefs and adding an additional Sergeant to Investigations. This will enable us to investigate more cases such as identify theft, fraud, computer scams and allowing more time for in-depth investigations.

Promotions are always exciting as our department develops and we move forward.

We have promoted one new lieutenant and three new sergeants. Sergeant Kim Ferber was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the Investigations Division; Joe Ward, previously a South Metro Drug Task Force Agent, was promoted to sergeant and assigned to a patrol team; Hal Mandler, previously Littleton High School SRO, was promoted to sergeant and assigned to a patrol team; and Steve Zoratti, previously a detective, was promoted to sergeant and assigned to a patrol team. We have brought some very talented people to patrol.

We’re also pleased to announce the addition of a new officer to the Department;

Samuel Hufschmidt. Our three Police Officer Recruits, currently in the Academy, Michelle Jones, Chase Gordon and Timothy Chastang will graduate on December 9, 2011. We are very proud of them.

In addition, the new City Manager, Michael Penny, has begun. He has been

incredibly impressed with the City of Littleton, our employees and all the volunteers. He is working to get around to meeting everyone he can.

2

Thanks to Officer Sean Carlson for holding a traffic control class for members of the LPCAAA in preparation for our Candle Light Walk duties. As members of the Citizens’ Academy Alumni, our volunteers help the Littleton Police Department with traffic control. Officer Carlson’s training was well received and will help us be effective and safe.

Congratulations are due to many members of the Littleton Police Department. Littleton Police Chief Heather A. Coogan has been awarded the Professional Lifetime Achievement Award by the Rocky Mountain Women in Law Enforcement Awards Committee during its recent annual conference in Blackhawk, Colorado. Littleton Police Department Detective Krista Bunten was honored at the annual SungateKids "For the Children" Gala for her outstanding commitment and dedication in child abuse investigations. Detective Bunten was presented with the 2011 Joan Schroer Excellence in Service Award. This award is presented to one law enforcement officer each year. As you will have read in the Chief’s letter, Sergeant Kim Ferber was promoted to lieutenant; and Joe Ward, Hal Mandler, and Steve Zoratti were promoted to sergeant. Officer Samuel Hufschmidt has joined the LPD. Three Police Officer Recruits, Michelle Jones, Chase Gordon and Timothy Chastang will soon graduate from the Academy, and will be honored at their Badge Pinning ceremony on December 21. Congratulations to all!

Working with the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Littleton Police Department participated in the national drug “Take-Back” campaign on October 29. LPCAAA volunteers helped LPD employees receive over two hundred pounds of unused medications from citizens. The medications were bundled in large boxes and handed over to the DEA for safe and proper disposal.
