Rainbow Tots & Pre-Nursery – Design and Technology
Week
Exploring and
experimenting using our
senses!
In Rainbow Tots and
Pre-Nursery we have
done 4 different
activities. We have felt
lots of textures and
made marks using
different materials.
Our first activity was melting coloured ice. We had to melt the coloured ice onto our paper and paint with the
ice. Next we built towers. We wrapped some blocks in tin foil and used shaving foam as magic glue to stick
the blocks together. Then we did some colour mixing on mark making boards. We were exploring how
colours can be changed by mixing colours together. Finally we looked at floating and sinking by looking at
different objects in the water tray!
We had a letter in
nursery from the Three
Little Pigs asking for our
help. We had to design
and build a new house for
them. We first tested
different materials to
see what would be the
best, and then we
designed and built our
houses.

Dear Nursery,
Please help! The Big Bad
Wolf has blown down our
houses and we have
nowhere to live! Can you
build us a new home to
live in?

We tested different materials such as, sticks, straws, bricks, play dough,
cotton reels and newspaper. The children decided which ones would
make the best houses for the Three Little Pigs.

Design and Technology Week - R1
For Design and Technology week
we made magical shoeboxes! First
we had to plan our design on
paper and label each section.
After that we sat in groups and
began creating our shoeboxes, we
had to think about how we were
going to make each element and
work as part of a team, this
meant we sometimes had to
compromise our ideas as we
couldn’t fit everything in!

Design and Technology - Week R2
In Reception for DT week we have designed and created ‘Magical
Shoeboxes’. We worked in small groups to manipulate different media
to make our shoe boxes come alive! We have enjoyed learning about
different ways of creating objects and people.

We really enjoyed our DT week in year 1.
We were set a challenge to design a moving picture for a nursery rhyme. We began our week by exploring different types of moving and pop up books. We really enjoyed the books that had pop up and slider
mechanisms.
We then had a go at making our own pop up designs before designing and creating our own moving picture.Lots of us decided to make our pictures for nursery rhymes such as Hickory Dickory Dock and The
Wheels on the Bus.
After we had made our products we evaluated them with a partner by using two stars and a wish.
We also had a special visitor who helped us to make a winter mural by using different printing techniques.

DT week was so much fun!
Our task for the week was to design and create our own moving pictures based on the nursery rhymes that we know and love. First we explored the pop up books that we already have in our classroom and looked
at the different mechanisms they have, including opening flaps, sliding pictures and pop ups.
We then had a go at making the different mechanisms before designing and creating our own moving picture. Creating our pictures was the best bit, we really enjoyed seeing our ideas come to life.
After we had made our products we evaluated them with a partner by using two stars and a wish.
To finish the week, we had a special visitor who helped us to make a winter picture by using different printing techniques and new materials we have not used before.

“I liked designing
our car because we
got to use lots of
colours.” Zac Painter
What an exciting week for 2H!
For our DT week, we had an exciting challenge - to make a toy car suitable for a teddy. We have worked really hard to make these cars and have put a lot of work into them. Firstly, we looked at other
examples of toy cars and researched our product thoroughly. We discovered that cars need to be bright and bold for children to like them. After, we designed our car specifically for our target
audience, making sure they looked colourful. Then, we were able to get cracking and make our toy car! We had lots of things to do to make our cars. We had to make a structure for our toy car using wheels
and wood, as well create the cars body. We even got to decorate the body. We had to concentrate hard and make sure our car was assembled properly.
Our cars look fab and we used a lot of DT skills. Well done 2H!

2B – Design and Technology Week
In year 2 we made a toy car for a
teddy. We learnt all about a
target audience and created our
own target audience. We decided
to make our toy car for young
children between the age of 5
and 7. We were able to use
wheels and axels to make our toy
car move.
We had so much fun!
As part of our D&T week we created a success criteria for our toy car of all the things
we thought needed to be included to make a successful toy car.
We decided that the toy car must have; Sides to keep the teddy in
Wheels so the car can move
Lots of colour to catch peoples eye
A soft pillow to keep teddy comfy
Enough room for the teddy to fit in.
After, we designed our toy cars; we drew pictures with labels of the different materials that we
could use. We had to think carefully about the different properties of the materials.
Once we had finished designing we could start making. We use a net cube to create the main
part of our car. We coloured in our net with bright colours and some of us added different
patterns on the sides. We then cut out doors and windows and cut out the cube net. After, we
stuck the net together with the different tabs. Then we threaded the wheels onto the thin
wood and to stop the wheels from falling off we added blue tac on the end. We attached the box
and wheels and axles together and we created a moving toy car!
Finally, we evaluated our work against the success criteria using two stars and a wish.
We loved making our toy cars, it was so much fun!

got to do lots of
practical
activities.”

3G – Design and Technology Week
During DT week, we found out
how to have a healthy diet. We
learned about the importance of
each of the five food groups and
how they help our body. We
discussed our favourite meals
and adapted them to ensure they
included all of the five food
groups. We created our re-
designed meal using salt dough
and painted it so the food looks
real.
3G have had lots of fun in Design and Technology Week this week and have been
very busy.
We began our week by finding out what Design and Technology is all about. We now
understand there are three important skills to develop; designing, making and
evaluating. We were lucky enough to establish all three skills.
Our challenge was to design and make a healthy fruit smoothie. Before we could do
this, we tasted five different unusual fruits. We chose our favourite two fruits
and came up with a product name for our fruity smoothie. We designed labels that
were appealing to other children, with the aim to encourage young people to eat
and drink more healthily. We then blended the ingredients together along with a
choice of either apple or orange juice and evaluated the taste and appearance of
our products.
On Thursday, we were also lucky enough to work with sculptor, Anthony Hammond,
in the forest school. He taught us how to weave willow so Year 3 could work as a
big team to construct a large willow arch. We can’t wait to watch it grow over the
years to come!

3H - Design and Technology Week
During DT week, we have
developed a better understanding of what a balanced diet is. We
shared our likes and dislikes and discussed our favourite meals. After learning about the food
groups and the importance of a balanced diet, we re-designed our meals to make their healthier and
more balanced.
During Design and Technology week we developed our designing, making and evaluating skills.
We all designed and made a healthy fruit smoothies. After coming up with a product name, we designed labels appealing to other children, with the aim to encourage young people to eat and drink more healthily. After taste-testing different fruits, we chose our final two that we
would include in our drinks. We then blended the ingredients together and evaluated the taste and appearance of our products.
We were also lucky enough to work with sculptor, Anthony Hammond, who taught us how to weave willow. Year 3 worked as a big team to construct a large willow arch. We can’t wait to
watch it grow over the years to come!
We were pleased to meet sculptor Anthony
Hammond and asked him lots of questions to extend
our learning. We learnt that he created willow
sculptures and also used a chainsaw to carve wooden
sculptures!

To introduce our design and technology week we were told that Cadbury’s wanted to design a new type of Easter egg. It had to appeal to all ages and look different and
exciting.
We first of all looked into all the ideas that we could use to make our Easter egg. We discussed in our groups the names of the egg, the ingredients and the packaging. We then used the internet to source images of the ideas we had to create a mood board.
Next, we decided on our final design and created an image of our egg and its packaging.
Finally, we made the chocolate egg using silicon moulds and our packaging from cardboard. When we assembled them together, they looked great. We can’t wait for
Cadburys to see them.
What a fantastic week we had!

“I really enjoyed
designing my own egg.
We couldn’t decide on
the best idea”
Callum Betts
We received a letter from Cadburys World asking us to design and create an egg for Easter. We were given criterion that we had to meet and told that the audience we were creating out egg for were children age 12-16. We began my creating a mood board by using the internet to research packaging, names and egg flavours that
already existed.
We then began designing our packaging. We thought carefully about how we could make the packaging eye-catching and some of us even added games onto the back. After that, we thought about the ingredients we
would need to put in out eggs. We thought about the weight of each ingredient as we were told that our egg had to weigh 100g.
We then went to buy the ingredients and created the chocolate egg by melting chocolate and adding ingredients. Next we poured the mixture into a silicon mould and left it to set.
We had a great two weeks designing, creating and evaluating our eggs but the best bit was… we got to eat them!

5C – Design and Technology Week
During Design and Technology week we researched catapults and their uses, we analysed different firing mechanisms and how tension can be generated. Then, using this knowledge we
designed and created our very own fully functional catapults. We wanted to take into consideration several things when designing them: how quickly it will
fire, how far it can throw an object and the accuracy in which it does so. We then worked together in small groups to make our own catapult. We used lots of different
equipment such as, wooden sticks, tape, elastic bands, masking tape and cardboard. Whilst creating our catapults we were constantly evaluating our design, assessing the
effectiveness then modifying and improving. We loved getting creative, working in groups and seeing our catapults in action.

5E – Design and Technology Week
During Design and Technology week we researched, designed and made our own catapults. We started off our week by researching catapults. We discovered that there were lots of
different designs. We then used this knowledge to design our own. We had to think carefully about the resources and equipment we needed to create our own
catapult. We then worked together within pairs to make our own catapult. We used lots of different
equipment such as, wooden sticks, tape, elastic bands and paper. We found that trial and error was the best way forward. We had to keep trying different ways of making the corners stick before we created our structure. We found that the basis had to be secure before it could
catapult anything. It was a fantastic learning experience.
“We had to think
carefully about the
equipment we needed
and how exactly to
design it,” Ella.
“I found it so much
fun making our own
catapults because
if you failed you
had to keep trying,”
Ashton.
“I really enjoyed working with my
new friend. I liked building the catapult,” Natasha.
WW2 Focus
MAKE DO AND MEND
Design and Technology Week – Year 6
Year 6 pupils have thoroughly enjoyed the design and technology focus weeks and have worked extremely hard to design and
create some fantastic products.
Before Christmas, our topic was WW2 and many pupils seemed fascinated about life during the war for people in England. In
light of this, the year 6 teachers set the pupils two design and technology projects and they were able to select the project
they wanted to participate in.
Pupils who selected the Make Do and Mend project were first of all introduced to the propaganda and many adverts that were
broadcast during the war to encourage people to use old clothes to create something new. Pupils were then asked to pretend
they were living during WW2 and had to make a scarf as a Christmas present for a family member or friend. Pupils began by
creating a sample chart and collecting any colours or fabrics they thought would suit their target customer. Pupils then went
on to create several designs and evaluate them before going to create their final design. Pupils also had to conduct some
research about the average length of a scarf for adults or children and then ensure they put dimensions on to their design in
order to ensure the length and width were appropriate.
Pupils then went on to measure and cut material before stitching them together using a basic running stitch. Some pupils
added patches or other small designs on to their product while others embroidered a letter to give their scarf a more
personalised touch.
Pupils completed their project by evaluating their design and discussing ways in which it could have been improved. It turns
out we have some real fashion designers in year 6.
“I liked designing my
scarf because I didn’t
know which material
would be the best at
first.” Alex
“I found the
embroidery
difficult but still
fun.” Kayleigh
“I enjoyed sewing my
scarf together as it
was my first time
doing it.” Sidney

Before Christmas, our topic was WW2 and many pupils seemed fascinated about life during the war for people in England. In light of
this, the year 6 teachers set the pupils two design and technology projects and they were able to select the project they wanted to
participate in.
Pupils who selected the toys project first researched toys that children were interested in during World War 2, and their
importance for keeping morale up during the war. Children were then tasked with designing their own moving toy for the target
audience of a child during World War 2. Pupils had to think carefully about children’s interests at the time (ships, planes, tanks etc.)
and plan out how their model would move to create a toy that a child would find interesting. We also had to consider the materials we
would have available and plan bright colours to make our toy appealing.
Pupils then went on to design and decorate their box with a World War 2 themed foreground/background. We then set about
creating the moving mechanism through use of wooden wheels and axels. Finally we created our moving model and attached him to our
mechanism to produce our finished toy.
Pupils completed their project by evaluating their design and discussing ways in which it changed over the course of the project and
ways in which they could have been improved.
