reflect on my first few months at Noble.

It is no secret that the world was a pretty challenging place in 2012 with even greater than normal uncertainty over the direction of the key economic drivers globally, whether in the established markets or the emerging economies where we have a particular focus.

The very fact that over the last year the operating environment was pretty hostile has, I believe, been a benefit to us all as it has enabled us to see where businesses make sense and which ones need additional support to be truly competitive on a sustainable basis.

A benign economic environment tends to mask the performances of businesses that are not positioned particularly well and a moderate performance from a poor business can all too easily lead to complacency and a lack of management rigor.

ficina Jovem Programme (OJP) began in 1997 with a

goal of professionally preparing students aged 8 to 16 for the real world. The programme started off modestly but currently includes over 140 students from the cities of Catanduva, Catiguá, Tabapuã and Novais.

The programme, lead by Eliete Palhares S. Benetti, Social Accountability Coordinator of Noble Bioenergia explains the four pillars of the programme, “to expand the opportunity for adolescents to prepare for personal and professional life, to promote the culture of work and social relations, to develop competencies adding social and community values,” and last pillar, “to contribute to the welfare of communities and sustainable development.”

This workshop provides tailor made courses to fulfil the needs of specific age groups. All students take part in workshops focused around communication, academics, fine arts & crafts,

Ochoir, physical education and games.

The older students have workshops to discuss citizenship, ethics, personal responsibility, health, drug prevention, cultural pluralism and environmental issues whereas the younger students have more simplified workshops that focus on communication, English language and ways to increase social skills through small group activities.

Eliete supports the workshop content to focus on everyday issues and current affairs to better prepare the students to

deal with real life situations. It also helps to discuss local issues because most of the time the students are directly affected by these issues, making them easier to relate to.

Noble Bioenergia has seen an increase of applicants each year.

In 2010, Eliete and her team invited a group of local teachers to the OJP to see how Noble Bioenergia’s initiative compared to other local school curriculums. All surveyed teachers commented how students in OJP were generally more disciplined, active, social and confident. OJP teachers

and volunteers say it is very gratifying to see such positive results from the programme and they take great pride in knowing the workshops are helping prepare students personally and professionally.

Since the programme’s inception, Noble Bioenergia has hired 47 graduates. One of the OJP graduates, Amanda Neves, was hired after successfully completing the programme. Amanda enrolled in OJP when she was 8 years old and graduated in 2010 at the age of 16. Amanda quickly became a standout in the programme choir workshops and even released her first CD in 2012. In addition to her regular work responsibilities, Amanda was very instrumental with the production of the OJP Choir

CD. The last OJP CD was completed in 2005 so this new edition was much anticipated. (Copies of this CD are available in our Hong Kong office.)

There have been a number of success stories from the programme that further validate the importance of the programme. Indifferent to the situation the student is coming from, each individual has graduated better prepared for the world, both personally and professionally. Eliete’s final thought is, “the programme encounters its share of difficulties and limitations, but we have a team of teachers who run each workshop with a great deal of commitment and competence. All effort is then considered worthwhile when the purpose is praiseworthy.”

"We are pleased to sign this agreement, allowing us to unload LNG volumes destined for the UK downstream gas market, where we are already managing physical gas flows with assets such as the Holford underground gas storage facility. This contract

Camille Duffy-Stibolt “Social”Geneva, Legal & Finance Assistant

What do you do at Noble?CDS: I am the legal & finance assistant for our Geneva office, also handling a number of events for our office.

We hear you are a fantastic dancer; how did you get started? CDS: My father used to call me wiggles as a child because I would never sit still! I started off with ballet, then progressed to tap, hip-hop, and currently flamenco.

What type of dancing do you do? CDS: In a more structured form, I dance flamenco. But I’m always open to new things. I love learning new dances through travels and people.

Dancing is one of the few moments when people let their guard down; let you see them for who they are, all silliness included.

Where is your favourite place to dance? CDS: Generally I prefer to dance in a studio or practice room (closed room surrounded with mirrors). But there is no set-rule; indoors, outdoors, on a mountain top, alone or in a group! Does it really matter where you dance? During the year, people in Geneva tend to be somewhat reserved, but during the festival period (summer) that changes. People become more social and figuratively remember to ‘dance in the rain’. I think you need to

do these sorts of things from time to time, it allows you to release your negative energy and pump yourself up again.

Any tips for people looking to start dancing? CDS: Go and do it! I’m sure that many people (like me) don’t like going to the gym, it’s repetitive, and lonely. You need other people around you to motivate you (if she/he can do it then so can I)!! Choose a dance you like, and just sign up. It’s a great way to meet new people. If you’re a guy, it’s also a great way to meet girls as there are almost always more girls than guys, and women LOVE a man who can dance!

Charities Race was founded in 1975 and since inception has raised over $61 million for Hong Kong charities. Noble Group first got involved in 2007 but has been a co-sponsor for the past 2 years.

Anthony Druker “Footy Fanatic” Central Kalimantan, Project Engineer

What do you do at Noble? AD: I am responsible for helping to manage the operations and commercial arrangements of the Central Kalimantan coal project. The CK project effectively involves Noble purchasing coal from suppliers, moving it through our facility (haul road and stockpile) before placing the material onto barges for transport down the Barito River. The role is multi-faceted and involves assisting in any of the daily tasks required to make the project more efficient and cost effective. Some of the more commonly performed jobs include cost control, stockpile management, quality control and barge planning.

What is your ideal holiday? AD: Give me a beach, good food and close friends and I am a happy man. As I live on site and in a very remote area, my time off is really precious and therefore hanging out with people close to me whilst enjoying the sun and surf does not get much better.

If you could only eat one food for an entire week, what would you eat? AD: Sashimi - Boring but so tasty and healthy too.

What does a typical Sunday consist of?AD: When back in civilization (away from the site operations) I always try to get outside and go for a run/workout with friends followed by a brunch.

I typically also try meet up with friends for a barbecue or swim to enjoy the sun and unwind. In the evenings a good dinner followed by a few drinks is the perfect way to relax and have some fun.

We heard you are a sports fanatic! What’s your favourite sport to play? Watch? Attend games? AD: Yes I love keeping fit, watching my footy and sport of all kinds for that matter. In terms of playing, Aussie Rules football is my sport of choice although living in Asia makes it pretty tough these days. I am a hugely passionate supporter of the code and when back in Australia always try get to a few matches when possible.

Summerbridge Hong Kong, is a non-profit organisation dedicated to improving the educational trajectories of underprivileged students by providing them with tuition, free English education and life skills development.

Noble has partnered with Summerbridge since 2002 and recently co-hosted an event on 20 October to encourage students to practice their English with native speakers.

The event took place at Mai Po “Gei Wai” (基圍). Students and volunteers took a 3 hour trek around protected fishponds and bird habitats, wrapping up the excursion with a sandwich lunch and briefing in the Nature Reserve’s Education Centre.

United Nations Global CompactNoble Group’s Communication on Progress 2012

The signatory assists Noble to focus on crucial CSR standards and provides a guideline for the integration into Noble’s business operations.

he United Nations Global Compact is a strategic policy initiative for businesses that commit themselves

to 10 principles in the area of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption. Noble has been a signatory since 2010, making these principles part of our business strategy and culture. We engage in collaborative projects which advance the broader development goals of the United Nations, particularly the Millennium Development Goals.

What are the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)?

A set of 8 development targets were initiated at the United Nations Millennium Summit in 2000, to inspire and combine effort from around the world to take action on reducing extreme poverty. All UN member states have targeted to achieve all of the development goals by 2015.

The development blueprint is agreed by all the world’s countries and all leading development institutions. Progress is measured in reducing income poverty, hunger, disease, lack of adequate shelter and exclusion — while promoting gender equality, health, education and environmental sustainability.

The goal is to make progress in the following 8 areas:

T

1

ERADICATE EXTREMEPOVERTY AND HUNGER

3PROMOTE GENDEREQUALITY ANDEMPOWER WOMEN

2

ACHIEVE UNIVERSALPRIMARY EDUCATION

IMPROVE MATERNALHEALTH

In July, we published Noble’s second Communication on Progress, to publicly disclose our ongoing support of the UN Global Compact and the progress Noble made in implementing the 10 principles in the last 12 months.

Human Rights Noble’s Chinese processing plants in Qinzhou and Longkou reached a milestone in safety - operating for more than one million safe working hours.

Environment In the 2011 submission to the Carbon Disclosure Project, Noble achieved the second highest score for carbon emissions disclosure in Asia (ex-Japan).

Labour In Brazil, Noble’s sugar mills across 4 locations were recognised for committing to better labour conditions and life quality.

Anti-corruption Ongoing training in ethics and proper business behaviour is held by our compliance officers in our major trading centres.

Here are the extracts of Noble’s initiatives in the area of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption:

YCAB HOPE Programme

Noble’s Sugar Mills - Recognising Brazil’s National Commitment to Labour Conditions

he YCAB Foundation is a non-profit organization based in Jakarta, Indonesia, with a focus

on youth development by providing access to education and financial assistance. Its Hands-on Operation for Entrepreneurship programme (HOpE) provides micro loans to female micro entrepreneurs, on the condition that they send their children to school. The project aims to create a stable income for families of these students, so that they can focus on their studies. In 2012, Noble contributed approximately US$20K to this project with a commitment for three years. The project was introduced to the Noble Foundation by Kristin Hartono, Operations Director in Hong Kong.

Lis is a 44-year-old single mother of three children, aged 11, 19 and 20. She lives in a small rented house in a deprived

nitiated by the President of Brazil in 2008, the National Commitment to Labour

Conditions in the sugarcane industry seeks to guarantee new rights and better quality of life for its workers.

The Commitment came as the result of a series of meetings among the business community, workers and Brazilian government, and serves as the basis for initiating public and private actions to improve working conditions. The Commitment includes public programmes and policies to protect workers; a set of good business practice in sugar and ethanol production units, as well as the emphasis on workers’ remuneration, health and safety and union activities.

Noble’s commitment to offer competitive products while ensuring workers’ rights has earned its four sugar mills – Meridiano, Catanduva, Potirendaba and Sebastianopolis – the certifications for recognizing the National Commitment.

neighbourhood in Jakarta and bakes cakes and cookies for a living. The loan Lis received is used for buying baking supplies, while customers come to know about her goods through word of mouth. Her main customer base is a group of employees working in a local retail bank.

Lis bakes her goodies using a simple oven, which is an aluminum box placed on top of a kerosene stove. As her kitchen is so small that she bakes on her patio, which offers more open space.

Lis’s dream is to open a small bakery. For now, she is saving for a bigger oven to meet customers’ rising demand, especially during festive seasons such as Eid and Christmas. Total loan administered by YCAB to Lis was US$667, of which Noble contributed half. Prior to receiving the micro loans, Lis sold fresh fruit juice but the profit margin was lower.

Tikkun’s values of compassion, care and share, children’s learning progress and health are closely monitored by professionals.

Two meals and snacks are provided daily, with the menus prepared with the help of the Curriculum Development Project Trust, to ensure the food meets nutrition and food safety requirements. In addition, the ECD teachers are constantly working towards early education qualifications, in order to provide better care and have long-lasting impact to the community.

Afrika Tikkun: Pre-school Education for Disadvantaged Children

Blackwood Leadership Capacity Building Program

n partnership with Afrika Tikkun’s Early Childhood Development Programme, Noble Group’s Charity

Afrika Tikkun is an international NGO dedicated to empowering communities, providing care and education to children in need. The Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre organises daily programmes for orphans and under privileged children in the Alexandra community just outside Johannesburg in South Africa.

The daily programme, known as the Tiger class, consists of 32 boys and 20 girls. While the curriculum is driven by Afrika

ne of the issues facing rural Australia today is the role of the mining industry and its impact on

land use in rural and regional communities. In light of this, Blackwood Corporation, of which Noble Group is a majority shareholder, has been working in partnership with the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation to launch a pilot program on rural leadership.

Oof Indigenous people will most likely have an intergenerational impact on the gap that currently exists between the life outcomes of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Queenslanders. It is pleasing to see corporate responsibility being demonstrated in practical ways such as this.” - Ron Weatherall, Deputy Director-General, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Service.

This unique initiative is funded by Blackwood Corporation and brings together

15 representatives from diverse backgrounds in mining and agriculture, committed to their rural communities to encourage active participation in the development of strategies and policies to address local issues. The 12-day course will run over three months enabling in-depth leadership development and networking including Indigenous land holders, the community and environmental leaders. Participants are selected from one of the Blackwood’s operational regions who are involved with agriculture, land management and ownership, land and water stewardship, cultural heritage issues, community resilience and who are affected by the issues of competing land use and access.

Noble Says No to Shark Finecently Noble became a signatory to WWF’s corporate programme to stop shark fin consumption,

trading and promotion. In response to the rise of shark conservation acts of WWF around the world, but particularly in Hong Kong and the Greater China region, Noble launched its “No Shark Fin” Policy. We made a corporate pledge to stop eating shark fin at any corporate function or dinner and to raise awareness about this issue among all our employees.

RSharks are harvested worldwide,

sometimes for their meat, but also for an even more lucrative fin trade centred in Hong Kong and the Greater China region. Sharks have existed for over 400 million years and are vital to maintain a well-balanced and healthy ocean. The demand for sharks, particularly their fins, has been one of the main factors driving global shark fisheries. The lack of sustainable shark fishery management has caused shark populations worldwide to decline drastically, which largely disturbs the

marine ecosystems and ecological balance of our oceans.

As sustainable shark fisheries decline, it is essential to stop eating shark fin to protect the shark population.

We ask our staff to refrain from consuming shark fin products, helping to follow Noble’s “No Shark Fin” policy.
