Prioritising mental health, happiness and stress, is important for our school community and the health of our students. Resilience refers to a child’s ability to overcome or bounce back from anything that students’ find challenging, including events that seem relatively minor to others. At Richmond Primary all teachers put in place strategies to build student’s resilience. One strategy is mindfulness. In a busy day of learning it is important for our students to have time to be present in the moment. Mindfulness is a strategy that when practiced regularly helps toward improving mental health. It is, The ability to be completely present in the moment To remain focused on one task To be completely engaged in a topic, task or conversation To raise self-awareness To increase appreciation of surroundings and of others To become more connected Ways to be mindful at school and home

Student Well Being

Lunchtime Clubs —Helping Relieve ‘Playground Stress’! One of the important goals for our school , with our limited space and high student numbers is the relief of ‘Playground Stress.’ Our teachers have committed to a number of initiatives in this area in an effort to provide alternative activities to promote use of under utilised playground space. This sees an extra yard duty teacher available at the Alan Bain Reserve to supervise lunchtime play there, as well as a range of clubs run by teachers during their lunch break. This includes: Aimee running Board Games Club; Sam and Sarah M running Lego Club; Ellen running Dance Club; Cassie running Chill & Homework Club; Nerida running Cosmic Kids Yoga Club; and Josh running Coding Club. We also have a number of teachers who are giving extra time to open the Library at lunchtime for book borrowing. We hope students are taking advantage of their teachers’ generosity and coming along (and also helping make our playground less crowded!)

Parent Survey Results

Thank you to all those parents who responded to our survey regarding our building options designed to help manage our growing numbers. This survey is now closed and our Education and Building & Grounds Committees of School Council will be looking at the results. I will report back to you all about what we learned. School Council will be using this information at our next meeting on June 13 to assist with the decision making process as to which option we commit to.

LOCAL SCHOOL NEWS—Third campus for the Fitzroy High School and Collingwood College Senior Secondary Partnership We are pleased to announce that the 2018-19 State Budget has allocated funds to plan for a new senior secondary campus to be shared by Collingwood College and Fitzroy High School on the Fitzroy Gasworks site. The campus will build on the successful Senior Secondary Partnership that has been running for nearly a decade between our dynamic inner city state schools. Collingwood College and Fitzroy High School have been working together delivering a wide choice of senior secondary programs while maintaining a strong identity and attachment to each of the respective schools by students and teachers. This site offers a key opportunity to enhance well integrated secondary education provision in the City of Yarra. We will continue to report any further developments as they occur.
