Hidden Gem - H idden Gem - Weaving Water by Annamarie Beckel

Lakefield resident Annamarie Beckel has recently released her fourth novel, titled WeavingWater. It is a departure from her usual historical fiction and is a novel about otters, healingthe human heart, and finding hope for an imperilled Earth. The main character is anecologist who is struggling with her fear about our doomed planet. She fears that the earthis damaged beyond repair, yet she yearns to do something that matters.

In the Newfoundland wilderness she isstudying otters and meets hereccentricneighbour Mattie Mackenzie, who has livedthere for 80 years. Livingin a world filledwith secrets and magic, Mattie confoundsBeth's scientificunderstanding at every turn.Ungrounded, Beth finds herself pulledinexorablytoward an affair with Mattie'snephew, Dan. She finds that there is hopeforherself and the Earth.

Weaving Water is a beautiful storyaboutperseverance, hope and open-mindedness. Beckel spent more than 5years on thisnovel, and all the royaltiesfrom sales will go to the World WildlifeFundCanada and the International OtterSurvival Fund. It is available to borrowfromthe Selwyn Public Library.
