How to use this book

Alongside the LBM book: This book should be used in conjunction with the main Little Big Maths book. The main book has key teaching points for each Progress Drive, plus essential information on the ‘how’ to teach Little Big Maths (The Little BIG Maths Way).

For Tracking a Group: In this book each Progress Drive provides the adult with space to efficiently track a group of children, making notes and recording evidence as we go. Postits, photographs or succinct jottings can allow the adult to assess and plan ‘next steps’ as the group make progress.

For Tracking Individuals: Although this is a group tracking book it also means there is individual tracking taking place. Knowing specifically which step each individual is up to on each Progress Drive allows for detailed personalised learning to be delivered. Sharing the next steps with the children makes them conscious and active learners. In this way assessment for learning becomes embedded into daily practice.

For 6 weekly planning: The ‘6 weekly’ planer allows adults to declare which steps they will aim to cover over the next 6 weeks for that group of children. There are 6 of these ‘6 week planners’. Thus, this tracking book will record and track the progress of a group of children for one year.

For Formal Assessments: Assessment frameworks vary from country to country and from time to time within a country. Which steps your country’s current assessment framework wishes you to formally assess and record, and when the child is ‘supposed’ to be at these steps according to that specific assessment framework, and where those steps

fit into the ‘Amounts CLIC’ structure, is all detailed in a simple document called, ‘CLIC on Your LBM Planning’.

It is therefore important for practitioners to ensure they have the LBM links to their current assessment framework for their own country. This is available free to download from www.AndrellEducation.com and can be printed and inserted into this book inside the back cover. By simply placing a coloured sticker against the steps in this book that are specifically mentioned in your country’s current assessment framework then it makes the process of assessing and recording the children’s numeracy development against that assessment framework a quick and easy one.

To Link into Big Maths: Many schools use Big Maths to track children’s progression for numeracy up Progress Drives throughout the Primary years. Where there is a BM icon next to a step this denotes a step from Big Maths and a child that has attained the LBM step with BM icon can therefore also have the equivalent step in their individual BM CLIC book recorded as attained. This provides vital seamless continuity for tracking and teaching so that the child experiences a numeracy learning journey across early years and primary years as if they were being taught by one teacher throughout.
