Energy for a mobile future. . .

Mobile energy supply has longsince become standard and evenindispensable in many areas.

Whether we are talking about mo-bile phones, laptops or the worldof digital cameras, where woulddesign and function be without theinternal workings of energy stor-age systems?

Given the fact that there is only alimited supply of fossil energysources, it is becoming increasinglyimportant to use new techniquessuch as hybrid vehicles for mobilityon the road.

Latest developments showcase hy-brids as a combination of an inter-nal combustion engine as the mainenergy source and an electrical ma-chine with a storage medium in theform of a battery, fuel cell orSuperCups.

Cars driven solely with electricitywill most likely be the next step inautomobile development.

Engineers and designers fromWeiss Umwelttechnik have put theirheads together with the key devel-opers in the automobile industry todevelop test systems. The idea isto test these new technologies un-der conditions as close to reality aspossible to meet the challenges fora safe future.

The safety equipment on these testsystems keep risks to a minimumwhen testing intentionally passesthe limits of normal use.

Existing systems mostly use nickel-metal hydride batteries, althoughlithium-ion batteries have longsince become the standard for mo-bile phones and notebooks.

The lithium-ion battery is also asource of energy on track for thefuture for hybrid drive due to itshigh cell voltage, power and ener-gy density. They have the advan-tage of thermal stability, a constantlevel of voltage over the dischargeperiod and the fact that it knowsno memory effect.

But safety for customers and theenvironment is also at the top ofthe agenda for this future genera-tion of cars. This is the reason whythere have been mandatory safetystandards for lithium-ion batteriessince 2003.

We believe these new techniquesshould offer the highest level ofsafety and all design efforts shouldbe aimed at ruling out any and allhazards.

An energy storage system has tobe as safe as possible. Externalcharges such as very high or lowtemperatures, fast temperaturechanges, humidity, mechanicalcharges or corrosion factors shouldnot cause them to fail or bringabout undesired effects.

We develop and build state-of-the-art systems for these special re-quirements applying next-genera-tion design ideas.

Our temperature and climate testchambers make it possible to coveran extensive range of safety testswith the right add-on equipmenttailor-made to your testing needs.

Each test system is built togetherwith you according to your test requirements and can be integratedto a complete test system.

We want to do our bit to make surethat it will be possible to safely usethe technical solutions of today inthe near future.

Avoiding risks in testing. . .

10 steps to optimum safety. . .

Weiss not only has extensive seriesproduction safety equipment asstandard test units. Special add-oncomponents can be supplementedfor testing lithium-ion batteries tai-lored to the different hazard levels(0 ... 7).

A comprehensive safety strategyguarantees that these systems arerun at a low level of risk.

Additional STB safety temperature limiters to limit the maximum test chamber temperature at a very high levelof reliability even if the test cabinet is malfunctioning.

Forced cooling for the system to +20 °C with a test bed guardprovided by the customer with a potential-free contact

Control and regula-tion with the S!MPAC*computer system

The 12̋ TFT-colour touch screendisplay and the Windows softwarepackage S!Mcontrol* are iconic formaximum operating convenience.Simulation programs and test find-ings are stored on the hard discand can be exchanged via Ethernetor USB stick (optional).

The 32-bit I/O S!MPAC* system doesall the controlling and regulatingwhile target and actual values areshown as graphs.

These systems have an on-lineservice function meaning you canuse the remote control and moni-toring to access them via networkon the web server or via internetfrom outside when authorised.

Evaluating and documenting testcycles including the customer’sspecial measuring data guarantee ahigher quality standard.

S!MPATI* links as many as 99 testingsystems to one PC to guarantee allchamber configuration parametersare archived.

S!MPATI* integrates itself into yourPC network to enable you to oper-ate other PCs with your Internetbrowser without requiring specialsoftware.

You not only can generate the nor-mal messages on the screen and in-put into the report file, you canalso generate emails for transmit-ting to different recipients. For in-stance, you can send these emailmessages to the PC in your office, acontrol room or mobile phone.S!MPATI* uses an available mail serv-er and supports SMTP.

You can find more information inour S!MPATI* prospect.
