“Literacy is the ability to read and use written information and to write appropriately, in a range of contexts.  It is used to develop knowledge and understanding, to achieve personal growth and to function effectively in our society.  Literacy also includes the recognition of number and basic mathematical signs and symbols within text.Literacy involves the integration of speaking, listening, critical thinking with reading and writing. Effective literacy is intrinsically purposeful, flexible and dynamic and continues to develop throughout an individual's lifetime. ”

Literacy is a complex set of abilities needed to understand and use the dominant symbol systems of a culture – alphabets, numbers, visual icons – for personal and community development. The nature of these abilities, and the demand for them, vary from one context to another.

In a technological society, literacy extends beyond the functional skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening to include multiple literacies such as visual, media, and information literacy.

These new literacies focus on the capacity of individuals to use and make critical judgments about the information they encounter on a daily basis.

• Poetry awakens our senses, helps us make connections to others, and leads us to think in synthesizing ways, as required by the use of metaphor.

• Children with well-developed oral language skills are more likely to have higher achievement in reading and writing.

• Creative applications of new media that build on the literacies students have already developed outside of school can help teachers tap into the literacy-enhancing power of poetry.

• Paying attention to the language and rhythms of poetry helps build oral language skills.

“Poetry is a form of literacy. Before words are spoken, they are often written; and, in today’s…world, the spoken is preferably performed. The construction of words into poetic stanzas requires skills and knowledge that are linked to one’s ability to think, read, write, and communicate.”
