Announcements GIS Services Upgraded at the Map Service Center

Series of improvements on the Map Service Center (MSC)

These upgrades include:

• National Flood Hazard Layer (NFHL) data is now searchable through Map Search

• NFHL databases are downloadable from MSC Product Catalog

• Effective DFIRM Databases have been replaced by the NFHL Databases, which are

available at no charge

• New NFHL Status Page for the latest updates, announcements, and links to data

• County/Community NFHL Databases are refreshed for updates on a daily basis,

ensuring that the public now has free, steady access to the most up-to-date flood

hazard data. Updated descriptions and documentation are also now available and will

serve as a resource to help users get the most out of the NFHL dataset.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the FEMA Map Information

eXchange (FMIX) at 1-877-FEMA-MAP

Statewide Geospatial Coordination Next Steps

Individual State calls

Including the SHMO, NFIP coordinator, State GIS Officers, and University professors

• How can we evaluate the available Statewide geospatial data?

• Barriers to data accessibility

• Centralized Storage

Many jurisdictions expressed the need for statewide data assessments and a centralized storage location

Data Survey - Statewide geospatial assessments

Tom Mueller – CALU http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/7BFTYQT

• Provided to the County GIS departments and many of the PA EMAs and the Keystone EMA LinkedIn Page.

• Survey available until December 2,2013.

• The results will be utilized to assess Statewide geospatial data availability, and applicability to enhanced risk assessments

Future Trainings in Region III – State specific?

Tools and workflows – streamline input of multi-jurisdictional data

Building Depth Grids with HEC-GeoRASJ. McGee

NCR HUG 11/21/13

Page 45: Listen to the recording here to follow along with the ...

2

Things Needed to Get Started

HEC-RAS model that is already georeferencedHEC-RAS 4.1.0 or later is preferred

ESRI ArcGIS 10.0 or 10.1(this demo completed with 10.1)

HEC-GeoRAS toolbar installedhttp://www.hec.usace.army.mil/software/hec-georas/downloads.aspxDownload HEC-GeoRAS_10.0_Setup.msi (then double click to install)

A DEM covering the study reachPreferably the same one used for the original modeling if possible

NCR HUG 11/21/13

Page 46: Listen to the recording here to follow along with the ...

3

Export HEC-RAS Model

Open the RAS modelOpen the correct study Plan that has the profile to be mappedExecute the Plan to ensure there are no errorsVerify which Profile name (within the Plan) has the data to be mapped

On the HEC-RAS ‘File’ menuClick ‘Export GIS Data…’

– Provide Export File path and name– Keep the “.RASexport.sdf” extention

– Select Reaches to Export– Select Profiles to Export– Choose additional options as needed

– Always keep the defaults checked.– Check the additional options if you plan to use them

or if your model includes that type of data

– Click ‘Export Data’

NCR HUG 11/21/13

Page 47: Listen to the recording here to follow along with the ...

4

HEC-GeoRAS Toolbar Set-up

Convert SDF to XMLBrowse to SFD file saved from RASBrowse to a location and provide a name for the XML file

– By default the program will use the same path and name with the new extension

On the ‘RAS Mapping’ menuChoose ‘Layer Setup’

– Provide a ‘New Analysis’ name– Browse to RAS Export XML file– Choose terrain type and browse to file– Browse to an output folder location– If using a TIN terrain, set a reasonable

rasterization cell size– Click ‘OK’

Due to current design differences, HEC-RAS exports data in SDF but GeoRAS reads data in XML. In future versions of HEC-RAS the data will export in XML directly.

Page 48: Listen to the recording here to follow along with the ...

5

Mapping Water Surface and Depth Grid

On the ‘RAS Mapping’ menuChoose ‘Import RAS Data’

– Click ‘OK’– View messages as the import runs and watch for

potential errors

On the ‘RAS Mapping’ menuChoose ‘Inundation Mapping’

– Choose ‘Water Surface Generation’– Select the Profile to map– Keep the other defaults as set– Click ‘OK’

On the ‘RAS Mapping’ menuChoose ‘Inundation Mapping’

– Choose ‘Floodplain Delineation Using Rasters’– Select the Profile to map– Choose other options as desired (defaults okay)– Click ‘OK’
