Southampton Archives Services

The first use of the term ‘mayor’ in Southampton was in a letter dating to around 1217. Walter Fortin was the first Mayor of Southampton to be mentioned by name; he served from about 1220 to 1234.

The majority of the pre-1986 research for this list of mayors was done by Miss S.D. Thomson, when City Archivist. The list is now kept regularly updated.

The gaps in the record, particularly for the 13th century are difficult to resolve. It has been assumed that a mayor existed for each year with the exception of 1249 through to 1269 when it is believed that Henry III responded to the wishes of the town not to have a mayor in that period.

The basis for determining the number of mayors is to number each mayor elected (including successors due to death etc). There was no mayor elected in 1948: at this point, the term of office was changed from November-November to May-May. The mayor at the time (Frank Dibben) served an 18 month term.
