20 Killed hyan explosion of tire-damp, carhuretted hydrogen.All these men were killed by an explosion of tire-damp.That is. tire-damp was the primary cause of the disaster,hnt fully 75 per cent , of the men were smothered by after-damp. generated by tine coal dust. The dust was lifted bythe force of the explosion and was battered against theposts and the sides of the ribs nearly an inch In thickness.The nationalities of the persons killed are as follows:Twenty-six ( 20 ) of them were Americans, Hermans. Irish.Scotch and English. 2 Bohemians. 13 Poles and OS Slavs,

and it is known that they leave 27 widows and 45 orphansin this country, and there are said to be 34 widows and 71orphans in the countries of their various nationalities.

Mitchel l was an American miner ; l ie had his leg and col lar-bone broken , and was injured internal ly : l ie was taken tothe West Penn Hospi ta l and died there on Apri l l l tb ; aninquest was held by Poroncr McDowal and a verdic t of accidenfa l death was rendered ,

Kearns was an Ir ish miner, h is breas tbone was crushed by afa l l of coal ; he was lying down hole ing under the coal , andhe did not have the coal spragged as he should have had inorder to protec t himsel f ; he died the fol lowing day ; thecoroner held an inquest and a verdic t of accidenta l deathwas rendered.

Kil l ians was a Hungarian miner, and be had a wife and fourchildren in Hungary: he came to the shaft bottom to get al ight , and instead of going on the other side ot the shaftthrough the manway , he walked right under the cage andwas instantly kil led by it when descending.

Kuntx was a Colander, he had only been in the mines a shortt ime before the accident: he was kil led by a fal l of slate:be had 110 post under it and was kil led through ignorance ofthe nature of the slate: the coroner held an inquest and ren-dered a verdict of accidental death.

Anderson was a Scotch miner: lie was fatal ly injured by afal l of slate and died in five hours; he bad two posts setunder the sla to. hut they were not enough , considering thenature of the slate, and Anderson should have known that ,because lie was an old miner: the coroner held an inquestand a verdict of accidental death was rendered.

Kaminskea was a Inlander, l ie bad only been in t in* mine ashort t ime; he was kil led by a fal l of slate, the assistantmine- boss had told him to set a post under the slate, hisl i t t le hoy had also pointed out to him the loose nature oft in1 slate, hut i t seems that he would not take any warningand bis death was the result.

GotT was an Knglishman; at the time of the accident he andseven others had gotten on the cage to come up the shaftthere was no cover on the cage, they were using it for tak -ing timber down the shaft , and some one threw a block ofwood carelessly on the landing and it fel l down the shaftand kil led Golf iustantly.

Smith was a Polander: he was instantly kil led by a fal l ofslate: he did not have the slate properly posted at the timeof the accident , the coroner held an inquest , and the juryrendered a verdict of accidental death.

Demster was a Scotchman; he was severely injured by a fal lof slate while drawing a rib and he died on September Sth.

Woods was an American , and as he was dropping cars fromthe tipple he fel l between theears and was crushed to death:the coroner held an inquest and the jury rendered a verdictof accidental death.

Buezer was a Hungarian miner and had a wife and threechildren in Hungary : he was kil led by a premature blast: |he did not get away but a short distance from the shot , andhe was struck on the head by a lump of coal , causing hisdeath in three hours.

Barbery was an Ital ian miner: he knew but l i t t le of the dan-gers encountered in mining or he would not have gone underthe slate to knock the post out : three tons of slate fel l onhim crushing his l ife out .
