TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Toward the end of the second century, a churchman in North Africa, Tertullian, described an early form of penance. Imagine if it had survived! There were three steps to this very public ritual. The unfortunate sinner was brought before the community in an itchy garment of goat’s hair. The communities of the day were small and intimate, and everyone knew everyone else. The shame of exposure for a big sin—murder, idolatry, or adultery—would have been profound. The penitent would beg the community for prayers of intercession, and then go sit in a place assigned to penitents. After this public confession, the penitent would be assigned some discipline, usually a relatively severe fast, or the wearing of distinctive garb. This remedy for sin was for a certain period of time, or at least until the bishop (every small community has its own bishop) judged that enough was enough. Then the person would be readmitted to the eucharistic community, although Tertullian doesn’t tell us how. Probably the bishop tenderly placed his hands on their heads, precisely where they were anointed at baptism. We do know that the readmission of penitents to the eucharistic table became in some churches a great celebration, and there are records from Spain of bishops leading penitents in a dancelike processional into the eucharistic hall on Holy Thursday. —Rev. Are You Registered?
Page 5
We are delighted that you’ve joined us for worship and we hope that you’ll return to pray with us often.
As a church community, we offer lots of services to our members in addition to our weekly worship If you have moved into the area, we invite you to become a member.
Feel free to call the parish office at 352-746-9422 or email us at: [email protected].
You may also fill out a new parishioner registration form which are located on the table in the Church narthex and on the St. Scholastica website: www.stscholastica.org.
Even if you are here infrequently, we welcome you to join our Parish Family.
Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Baptism Registered parishioners should contact the office for instruction. This should be done at least six months before the birth of your baby.
Marriages Registered parishioners should contact the parish office at least six months in advance of making marriage arrangements.
Sick Calls Please contact the parish office if you need a priest to come to your home to anoint you, or to be anointed at a weekday Mass.
If your child or children have reached the age of 21 and are away at school or no longer residing with you, please encourage them to register at a parish where they currently reside. Establishing church membership is very important. Should they be asked to serve as a
Godparent or Confirmation Sponsor, their parish of residence will need to verify their church membership and attendance and provide them with the required documentation. Please feel free to call the parish office at 746-9422 if you have any questions.
Did you know that demographic studies estimate that more than 1/3 of all
Catholics are not registered in a parish?
Please encourage your friends and family to register!
Registering is important because:
• If a parish doesn’t know who is out there, how can it adequately serve the needs of all - especially singles, divorced or young families who may not see the need to register?
• Registered parishioners receive helpful information about our parish. Registering is easy. Registration forms are available in the parish office, the narthex and on the parish website.

Stewardship Reflections September 20, 2015 - 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” (Mark 9:35)
Jesus teaches us that we are called to serve one another. Sacrifice is not a word that many people like to hear. We think it means that we must give up something that we want. However, the literal meaning of sacrifice is “to make holy,” from the words “sacer” = sacred and “facere” = to make. In other words, we make our lives holy by sharing our gifts in the service of God.
Online Giving “As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” - 1 Peter 4:10

Christ Renews His Parish
Rosary Makers
Page 7 Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
How many of us, fired up by our renewal weekend, ended it by thinking, “Now what? How can we keep this great feeling going?” In an effort to reignite some of that fire of renewal we are planning monthly sessions over the summer to enable us to reacquaint ourselves with our CRHP sisters and form new relationships with those we may not have met. It will be an opportunity to pray, meditate on scripture, and share our faith with our sisters. If you have made a CRHP weekend, whether you were able to continue with formation or not, you are cordially invited. We will meet on the first Sunday of the month from 5 to 8 P.M. in the parish hall. Please join us. Your absence will be felt. If you have questions please call Sue Tejchman at 628-5112
St. Scholastica Rosary makers began our 4th year in January. Our meetings are held 3rd Tuesday of following months: September 15th, October 20th, November 17th and no meeting in December. We have made and shipped 17,000 rosaries for local and missionary needs.
New members are Welcome. Supplies are furnished. For more information, please call Ann Downer at 352-746-4669.
Our choir took a summer break from rehearsing, but we’re back in full swing, and inviting new members to join us on Wednesdays from 5:30 PM until 6:45 PM. Those who attend this rehearsal may choose to sing at 4 o’clock Mass on Saturday or 9:00 Mass on Sunday.
Bell choir rehearses on Mondays at 5:30 PM, in the church. This provides an excellent opportunity to join in the fellowship of making music if you don’t feel called to join the choir.
We welcome new members. If you would like to introduce yourself, you may email John Edel at [email protected] or see us after Mass.
Instrumentalists are also invited to introduce yourselves, whether you would like to play regularly at week-end Masses, or would prefer to offer your talents for special feast and holy day celebrations, such as Christmas and Easter.
The Community of Catholic Women will be offering their $100 monthly drawing to all parishioners. Tickets are just $25 or three for $60. Each month, a name is drawn for $100 and then placed back in for next month’s drawing. YOU COULD WIN $100 A MONTH FOR A YEAR!!!
For tickets, contact Connie Taylor at 352-527-2599.
The Community of Catholic Women will be holding a Flea Market on October 23 and 24, 2015 at the Parish Center from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. We will keep you informed as to where you can bring your donations at a later time. Thank you for your generosity.
