The Lismore High Song Club The Lismore High Song Club is a young initiative involving
students who understand the benefits of singing in a
group. Any student who enjoys singing or who have ever
been part of a choir are encouraged to join the club. Here
at Lismore High we have a long and proud tradition of
choir performing for school events and out in the commu-
nity. Sessions will run on Tuesdays during period 3 and
will need parent/carer authorisation to attend. Any stu-
dents interested are encouraged to see Mr Kennedy for
further information and a permission note, there is no cost
attached to being a member of this club.

Executive Report
Welcome back to the 2019 school year. There have been some changes in school staffing and I would
like to take the opportunity to introduce Mrs Scott (Support teacher), Mrs Readman (HSIE teacher), Mrs
Levy (New Choices teacher) and Mr Graham our new Deputy Principal.
This year Mr Swanbury is the Deputy responsible for years 8,10,12 (evens) and Mr Graham 7,9,11
(odds). Both Mr Graham and Mr Swanbury are also teaching classes this year. As the senior leadership
team of the school, we will continue to drive our Campus forward and implement the strategic directions
of the Campus and College plans in the areas of Teaching, Leading and Learning.
A major focus of the year for staff is “chewing the FAT”. The ‘F’ relating to families and improving our
communication strategies, while the ‘A’ is around assessment and providing enhanced written feedback
to students and lastly the ‘T’ is an increased emphasis on quality teaching practices. We have again
subscribed to Study Skills Online. You or your child can access this resource from home using the login
details attached to the newsletter. The homework centre will continue to operate after school from
3.15-4.30 Monday-Thursday and all students are encouraged to access this free resource to work on
study skills, assessments, homework, revision or remediation.
This year REAL (Religious Education Association Lismore) is providing SRE (special religious educa-tion) at LHC. Notes have been given to students with further details for parents wishing their child to receive instruction in this area. Construction will begin on the library outdoor learning area towards the end of term and it is anticipated
to be ready for term 2. An additional $100 000 laptops and computers have arrived this year to support
student learning.
I would like to encourage parents to attend the upcoming P&C AGM and become involved with our
highly committed team of parents who I look forward to working closely with in 2019.
I look forward to our swimming carnival on Monday and would like to thank Mr Thompson and his team
for making the day a success and look forward to house war cries and participation on the day. Our
partner primary schools and year 6 students will join us on 26/2 for these students to gain a taste of high
school and I look forward to meeting them during the planned activities for the day.
We have an additional 30 enrolments with a total of 437 students this year reflecting the community’s faith in our school as a centre for educational excellence. Our investiture ceremony highlighted the number of outstanding student leaders we have in the school and I look forward to working with them to improve opportunities for our students. “Spectemur Agendo”- Let us be judged by our actions.
Mr Chris Williams
Principal
LHC New Deputy Principal
Hello to the entire Lismore High Campus! My name is Trent Graham and I am new to the school in the
role of Deputy Principal. I am also the Head Teacher of the PDHPE Faculty. I have recently relocated to
the Lismore area with my family after spending the last 3 years as a Deputy Principal and relieving Prin-
cipal at Walgett Community College. Prior to this I had worked for 12 years in a number of schools in
Tasmania.
I feel incredibly lucky to be working at LHC with all the wonderful staff and students. The first few weeks
in a new school are always full of lots of learning and I’ve enjoyed the challenge of learning the LHC
ways and meeting and working with the staff and students. The culture and feel of the campus is fantas-
tic and reflects the high expectations of all stakeholders and the great things going on in and out of the
classroom.
I’m really looking forward to working closely with the school and community to ensure LHC continues to
move forward as the heart of secondary education for Lismore.
I’d like to thank the students, staff and community for making me feel so welcome since the start of the
school year.
Trent Graham
Deputy Principal
P&C News
Our first general P & C meeting was held last week with a good turn out of parents. I would like to thank
all parents and carers who supported the P & C and attended regular meetings in 2018 and a special
thank you to my executive team Meagan, Angela and Lauren for all your work throughout the year.
Our next meeting is on Monday 4th March which will be our AGM. It would be great to meet new par-
ents, carers and community members within our school. I encourage everyone to come along and be a
part of the P & C to assist in the support and discussion making of our children's school and hear about
the exciting things that go on at Lismore High.
P & C meetings are held the first Monday night of the month during the school terms from 6 to 7pm in
the science room opposite the office. All parents, carers and community members are more than wel-
come to attend.
See you all on the 4th March!
Nadine Toniello P & C President

Study Skills
STUDY SKILLS TIP FOR FEBRUARY: USEFUL HANDOUTS AND PLANNERS Just a reminder that our school subscribes to the study skills website www.studyskillshandbook.com.au which means that all parents and students at the school can access the site at school and at home. Please take some time this week to log in and have a look. This is a website with units of work on different study skills topics, looking at how students can improve their results as well as other resources and planning templates to make dealing with schoolwork easer. On the THINGS TO PRINT page at the top of the home page there are many useful handouts. Scroll to the bot-tom of the page to see an alphabetical list. One of these is the ‘Top Tips For Parents’ handout. Some examples of the types of tips on this handout are as follows:
It is a great idea for students to set up a folder for each subject that stays at home, somewhere to file away past tests, assignments, completed topics and to keep everything together for that subject.
Each night students should work on homework first, then assignments or test preparation. After this stu-dents need to look for other things they can do to enhance their understanding of their subjects, such as making study notes, doing extra questions, revising earlier topics.
Study Skills continued... The best way to deal with distractions is to work in half hour blocks with no distractions during this
time. This means during the half hour blocks allocated to schoolwork, no social media etc. not for the whole night, just for those half hour blocks.
One of the biggest mistakes students make is leaving their study notes until just before their ex-ams. One of the best habits students can get into is doing their study notes throughout the year, at the end of each topic is a good time to do this. Whenever students don’t have much homework, they should be working on study notes.
The HELP guides on the Things to Print page are also useful resources. Each is a 10 page booklet that targets specific areas. There is a great one for students starting Year 7 and another for those starting Year 11. For students a very useful handout is the term planner. It is a great idea at the start of every term to print off the term planner (or print out 4 for the year). Simply fill in the due dates for the term as you find out about them, and place the term planner somewhere visible at home – for example above your desk on a noticeboard. Highlight tests in one colour and assignments in another colour so they stand out clearly. Cross off each day as you go, so you have a clear picture of how the work is spread out over the term and how long until things are due. Writing these due dates in your diary as well is essential of course, but it does not give you the overall picture like a term planner does. This is a good thing to do at the start of every term right from the start of secondary school through to the end (and beyond to university as well!).
