Oporto, the economic and cultural

capital of northern Portugal, is a city

with ancient origins that gave its name

to the entire country. Its architectural

heritage and enviable position near

the mouth of the River Douro have

made it an UNESCO World Heritage

site.

Portugal, and the spectacular winding gorge of the Douro Valley, is the most

beautiful of all. Enjoy a leisurely tour through this magnificent countryside

speckled with granite houses and wrought iron balconies to Portugal’s wine

country.

ITINERARY

Day 1: (L)

Your comfortable coach will take you to visit Oporto. Enjoy a panoramic tour of the city passing

the scenic Douro River mouth, called “Foz”, the Clérigos tower and the City Hall located at

Avenida dos Aliados. At Vila Nova de Gaia, you will have the opportunity to visit one of the

wineries that produces the world-famous port and learn about its production. The discovery of

Port wine dates from the 17th century when British merchants keen to build up trade with

Portugal fortified the wine of Douro with brandy to prevent it from turning sour while in transit.

It was found that the stronger and sweeter the wine, the better flavor it acquired. Over the

years, methods of maturing and blending were refined and continue today in the port lodges.

You will continue to Vila Real, where you will have some time to stroll around. From here it is a quick drive to Peso da Regua.

The wine valleys of the Douro and its tributaries provide some of the most spectacular scenery in Portugal. Your last stop of

the day will be at Quinta da Pacheca where you will take guided tour.

Day 2: (B, L)

After breakfast you will board a Douro cruise for a four hour river tour of the Douro Valley. You will then board your coach at

Lisbon is a city that inspires poetry and

creates its own mythology; Camões, in

his great Portuguese epic The Lusiadas,

described it as "Princess of the

World…before whom even the Ocean

Bows." You will head to the Belém area

where you will star by visiting the

Just across the way are the Belém Tower and the Monument to Discoveries. The first

was built in 1515 as a fortress to guard the entrance to Lisbon's harbor, it was the

starting point for many of the voyages of discovery, and for the sailors it was the last

sight of their homeland. The Monument to Discoveries was built in 1960 to

commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator. It

depicts a three-sailed ship ready to depart.

LIS25 ANCIENT & MODERN ARTS IN LISBON Half-day

The origin of the National Museum of

Ancient Art goes back to the Retrospective

Exhibition of Ornamental Portuguese and

Spanish Art that took place in 1882. The

collection of the most important museum in

the country was basically derived from

the very large artistic spoils coming from

the many convents and monasteries

abolished by the liberal law of 1834 and

later enriched with acquisitions from

the national palaces after the monarchy and generous donations. It has

remarkable collections of Portuguese and foreign painting from the 12th to 19th centuries, sculpture from the 12th to 18th

centuries, gold and silver work from the 12th to 18th centuries, drawings from the 15th to 18th centuries, European prints

from the 16th to 19th centuries, Portuguese and foreign ceramics, tapestry, textiles and furniture with a focus on Indo-

Portuguese style. The painting starts with a master piece: the polyptic of Saint Vicent by the royal painter Nuno Gonçalves of

the 15th century. In this section, you’ll see an ensemble of Portuguese Flemish painting for altars from the same period.

The Goldsmith collection is the most representative in Portugal. The museum has around 2000 religious and civil pieces going

from the 12th to the 21th century. The most representative pieces are the monstrance, crosses and reliquaries as well as

the tableware of the House Germain. Most of the pieces show precious stones from Orient and Brazil. The furniture changes

according to the tastes of our monarchs and the influence from Europe. Also here it was used the exotic woods from Brazil and

the Orient.

The pieces from India, as the porcelains from the 16th century and the folding screens named Namban, where the Portuguese

were represented by the Japanese in the 16th (unique in the world) are a must. The collection of ceramic shows us

the different factories in Portugal (Viana do Castelo, Factory of Rato, Factory of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, Coimbra, Caldas

da Rainha and Estremoz). The tour ends with the visit of the church belonging to an old convent that burned and gave its

ground to the museum. It was decorated with glazed tiles and gilded carved wood.

The Centre of Modern Art, whose acquisitions program began at the end of the 1950’s, contains the most representative

Portuguese 20th artists, as well as some foreign artists with whom the former were acquainted, dating mostly up to the 1950’s.

Our visit will include names as Almada Negreiros, Mário Eloy, Amadeu de Souza Cardoso, Mário Cesariny, Paula Rego, Eduardo

Viana and Maria Helene Vieira da Silva.

Lisbon is linked with the heroic deeds of the Portuguese maritime exploration, in the 15th and 16th centuries. This was

the Age of Discoveries and the Golden Era of Portugal, transforming Lisbon into the opulent centre of a vast empire.

LIS33 BIRDWATCHING IN TAGUS ESTUARY NATURAL RESERVE Half-day

Meet the group and start this nature tour

to Eastern Lisbon to Tagus estuary home

of more than 250 species. Portugal is not

only one of Europe’s great beauties, it is

also the keeper of one of Europe’s

splendid secrets— its rich habitat and

relatively small population make Portugal

a magnificent location for bird watching.

The Tagus estuary area is considered a

Ramsar wetland site of international importance, and includes a wide Special

Protection Zone (ZPE) and a Nature Reserve (RNET), of over 14.000 hectares,

specifically created to protect wintering, passage and breeding populations of aquatic birds.

You will be able to observe a quite extraordinary range of birds, from Flamingo to Black-shouldered Kite and Squacco Heron to

Little Bustard. Nature seems especially close here, because of the unique age-old relationship between agriculture and

the land. Enormous, powerful black bulls abound, lazing under cork oaks, while the ecological balance created over centuries

has ensured a wide biodiversity. The range of lichens on cork is both unique and remarkable. Many wild mammals

are common, especially the Egyptian mongoose, which is regularly seen, moving in family groups. The places visited include

special habitats: intertidal mudflats, salt marshes, salt pans, rice fields, reed beds, cork oak woodlands and wide steppe-

like pastures.

LIS35 WATER MUSEUM & AQUEDUCT Half-day

Enjoy a guided tour of three integral sites of Lisbon’s complex 18th century water

system. The Water Museum takes visitors through the history of how water was

supplied to Lisbon and maintains the atmosphere of an industrial installation

from the 19th century with its various exhibition rooms and steam machines.

The Lisbon Aqueduct was built in 1746 to bring clean drinking water into the city.

Its inaugural stone was laid at the Mae de Aqua reservoir (Mother of Water); the

cool stone chamber of which, with its floating platform, is often used for art

exhibitions. The aqueduct is composed of 109 stone arches, which were the

tallest in the world when the aqueduct was built. The highlights of the aqueduct

are 14 arches which cross the Alcantara Valley, the tallest of which is 65m (213ft) with a span of 29m (95ft). While all 58km

(36 miles) of the aqueduct cannot be seen at once, the best view can be had from the Campolide train station.

of Portuguese society. In the late 19th century, he wrote “Mistérios da Estrada de Sintra” in cooperation with a fellow writer. It

was first published as a series of anonymous letters centered in a plot of mystery and intrigue that takes place between Lisbon

and Sintra. “Os Maias”, considered by most as Queirós’ masterpiece, combining a perplexing theme with a satirical portrayal of

Portuguese society (mostly aristocracy). “A Cidade e as Serras”, focuses on the differences between city and countryside,
