What is Linux
• Linux operating system (OS) was first coded by a Finnish computer programmer called
Linus Benedict Torvalds in 1991, when he was just 21!

Features of Linux
1. Linux is a free operating system.2. Linux comes with most of the required
software pre-installed.3. Linux never gets slow.4. Linux can even run on oldest hardware5. With Linux, you get the highest degree of
possible customization.

Features of Linux
6. Security has always been the number one priority with Linux
7. There do not exist viruses for the Linux platform
8. If you already know what fragmentation is, and are already used to defragmenting your disk every month or so, here is the short version : Linux doesn't need defragmenting.

Features of Linux
9. Linux comes with a complete development environment, including compilers, toolkits, and scripting languages.
10.Supports multiple processors as standard.11. True multitasking. So many apps, all at once.12.Linux is desktop computer ready13.Linux desktop distributions come with many
commonly used pre-installed software's

Features of Linux
14.Governments of many countries around the world are shifting to Linux from Windows due to the many benefits it offer
15.Countries like India, France, Pakistan, Czech Reppublic, Brazil, Germany, USA, Austria, Spain, China, and Peru already use Linux

History of Linux
• 1985 Free Software Foundation (FSF) founded by Richard Stallman. Along with other programmers creates the tools needed to make a UNIX compatible OS.
• 1985 Professor Andy Tannenbaum creates a UNIX like operating system called Minix.
• 1991 Building on the concepts in Minix, Linus Torvalds (Finnish college student) develops Linux along with help from other users on the web.
