Linkin Park

Linkin Park is an American rock band from AgouraHills, California. Formed in 1996, the band rose to in-ternational fame with their debut album Hybrid Theory(2000), which was certified Diamond by the RIAA in2005 and multi-platinum in several other countries.[1]Their following studio album Meteora continued theband’s success, topping the Billboard 200 album chart in2003, and was followed by extensive touring and charitywork around the world.[2] In 2003, MTV2 named LinkinPark the sixth-greatest band of the music video era andthe third-best of the new millennium.[3] Billboard rankedLinkin Park No. 19 on the Best Artists of the Decadechart.[4] In 2012, the band was voted as the greatest artistof the 2000s in a Bracket Madness poll on VH1.[5] In2014, the band was declared as the Biggest Rock Band inthe World Right Now by Kerrang.[6][7]

Having adapted numetal and rapmetal to a radio-friendlyyet densely layered style in Hybrid Theory and Mete-ora,[8][9][10] the band explored other genres in their nextstudio album, Minutes to Midnight (2007).[11][12] The al-bum topped the Billboard charts and had the third-bestdebut week of any album that year.[13][14] The band con-tinued to explore a wider variation of musical types intheir fourth album, A Thousand Suns (2010), layeringtheir music with more electronic sounds and beats. Theirfifth album, Living Things (2012), combines musical ele-ments from all of their previous records. Their sixth andmost recent album, The Hunting Party (2014), returnedto a heavier rock sound. The band has collaborated withseveral other artists, most notably with rapper Jay-Z intheir mashup EP Collision Course, and many others onthe remix albums Reanimation and Recharged.[9] LinkinPark has sold over 68 million albums worldwide and haswon two Grammy Awards.[15][16][17]

1 History

1.1 Early years (1996–2000)

Linkin Park was founded by three high school friends:Mike Shinoda, Rob Bourdon, and Brad Delson.[18] Thethree attended Agoura High School in Agoura Hills, Cal-ifornia, a suburb of Los Angeles. After graduating fromhigh school, the three began to take their musical interestsmore seriously, recruiting JoeHahn, Dave “Phoenix” Far-rell, and Mark Wakefield to perform in their band, Xero.Though limited in resources, the band began recordingand producing songs within Shinoda’s makeshift bed-

room studio in 1996, resulting in a four-track demo tape, entitled Xero.[18][19] Tensions and frustration within theband grew however after they failed to land a recorddeal.[18] The lack of success and stalemate in progressprompted Wakefield, at that time the band’s vocalist, toleave the band in search of other projects.[18][19] Farrellalso left to tour with Tasty Snax, a Christian punk andSka band.[20][21]

After spending a considerable time searching for Wake-field’s replacement, Xero recruited Arizona vocalist,Chester Bennington, whowas recommended by JeffBlue, the vice president of Zomba Music in March 1999.[22][23]Bennington, formerly of a post-grunge band by the nameof Grey Daze, became a standout among applicants be-cause of the dynamic in his singing style.[18] The bandthen agreed on changing its name from Xero to HybridTheory; the newborn vocal chemistry between Shinodaand Bennington helped revive the band, inciting themto work on new material.[18] In 1999 the band releaseda self-titled extended play, which they circulated acrossinternet chat-rooms and forums with the help of an on-line 'street team'.[24][25] The band’s renaissance culmi-nated with a change in name; from Hybrid Theory, theband once again changed its name, this time to LinkinPark, a play on and homage to Santa Monica’s LincolnPark.[18] The band initially wanted to utilize the name“Lincoln Park”, however they changed it to “Linkin” toacquire the internet domain “linkinpark.com”.[26] How-ever, despite these changes, the band still struggled to signa record deal. After facing numerous rejections fromseveral major record labels, Linkin Park turned to JeffBlue for additional help. After failing to catch WarnerBros. Records on three previous reviews, Jeff Blue, nowthe vice president of Warner Bros. Records, helped theband sign a deal with the company in 1999. The bandreleased its breakthrough album, Hybrid Theory, the fol-lowing year.[22]

3 Musical style and influences

Both Hybrid Theory and Meteora combine thealternative metal,[10][142] nu metal,[143][144][145] andrap rock[144][146] sound with influences and elementsfrom hip hop, alternative rock,[147] and electronica, utiliz-ing programming and synthesizers. William Ruhlmannfrom AllMusic regarded it as “a Johnny-come-lately toan already overdone musical style,”[148] whereas RollingStone described their song "Breaking the Habit" as“risky, beautiful art”.[149]

In Minutes to Midnight the band experimented with theirestablished sound and drew influences from a wider andmore varied range of genres and styles, a process Los An-geles Times compares to a stage in U2's work.[12] In it,only two of the songs feature rapping, and the majorityof the album can be considered alternative rock.[150][151]NME magazine’s Dan Silver criticized the band’s ap-proach, calling it the “sound of a band trying and failingto forge a new identity”, and referring to the song “HandsHeld High”, a song about terrorist attacks and war, as “farand away the funniest thing you will hear all year”.[152]

The vocal interplay between Chester Bennington andMike Shinoda plays as a major part within Linkin Park’smusic, with Bennington being the lead vocalist and Shin-oda as the rapping vocalist. On Linkin Park’s third album,Minutes to Midnight, Shinoda sings lead vocals on “In Be-tween”, “Hands Held High”, and on the B-side “No RoadsLeft”. On numerous songs from band’s fourth album, AThousand Suns, such as the album’s four singles ("TheCatalyst", "Waiting for the End", "Burning in the Skies","Iridescent"), both Shinoda and Bennington sing. Onmost of the record’s tracks, the band notably used elec-tronic drumbeats along with outro drumbeats. The albumhas been regarded as a turning point in the band’s musicalcareer, having a stronger emphasis on electronica.[153][154]James Montgomery, of MTV, compared the record toRadiohead's Kid A,[155] while Jordy Kasko of Review,Rinse, Repeat likened the album to both Kid A and PinkFloyd's landmark album The Dark Side of the Moon.[156]Shinoda stated that he and the other band members weredeeply influenced by Chuck D and Public Enemy. Heelaborated: “Public Enemy were very three-dimensionalwith their records because although they seemed political, there was a whole lot of other stuff going on in there too.

Page 7: Linkin Park 1

7

It made me think how three-dimensional I wanted ourrecord to be without imitating them of course, and showwhere we were at creatively”.[157] One of the record’spolitical elements is its samples of notable speeches byAmerican political figures.[158]

Their fifth album, Living Things, is also an electronic-heavy album, but includes other influences, resulting ina harder sound by comparison.[159][160] The band returnsto a heavier sound, compared to their last three albums,on The Hunting Party, being described as an alternativemetal and hard rock album.[161][162]

Linkin Park’s influences include Nine Inch Nails,Deftones, The Roots and Aphex Twin.[163]
