COMMERCIAL IN CONFIDENCE
“I can’t get a job because I don’t have the experience the company wants…
…but I can’t get the experience if nobody will give me a job”
Australian youth unemployment we need your help
Despite Australia’s improving jobless rate and business confidence, youth unemployment across Australia remains more than double the national average.
Australia’s youth jobless rate today stands at approximately 12%.
Unemployment is not just about receiving better training. There are thousands of well-qualified Australians, including those with degrees, who are unemployed today.
What is required is jobs - so they can learn an occupation or trade, build confidence and take their first steps on their career journey. We need our young people to be meaningfully employed.
While experience can be quickly gained on the job, a failure by Australian businesses to recognise the skills of young talent could result in long term damage for the economy – and their business.
So, what are the skills needed for the future of your business?

NOT ENGAGED IN EDUCATION
NOT EMPLOYED
We undertook a survey of more than 7,000 Australian businesses which revealed that innovation, creativity, collaboration and problem solving were the skills they believed were most needed in the future.
Skills that our Australian youths have been developing since they first entered the education system. Skills that young Australians have in abundance. With more and more entry level jobs disappearing, it’s imperative that we, the business community of Australia, take a stand to support the development of our future workforce.
And we need you to help us lead the way.

Shaping Young Futures Program
To help tackle youth unemployment, Randstad launched the Shaping Young Futures program in April 2015, which aims to help young Australians develop their job seeking skills and connect with organisations willing to invest in the talent force of the future.
We have committed to investing in our next generation of workers – the young Australians of today – and now we are asking you to invest with us.
Randstad shaping young futures
Our ultimate aim is to help reduce youth unemployment by creating
genuine pathways into employment for young people by successfully finding
them paid internships, temporary, part time and full time roles with employers.
Having completed high school or university, young job seekers don’t know how to go about finding the career that’s right for them, experiencing multiple anxieties:
• lack of workplace experience (and life experiences) has resulted in a strong sense of “not knowing” what they want to do
• lack of practical knowledge and tools on how to find and apply for a job
• greater competition for desirable roles due to tertiary education being commonplace
• financial and social pressures are forcing young people to rush their career seeking process
Despite valuable skills and experience, their talents go undiscovered by employers due to their lack of experience.
Ironically their chances of employment are already limited by the very format of the traditional CV and recruitment programs which have been designed to screen them out in the first place.
the challenge
How do you demonstrate on a resume, skills like creativity, innovation and collaboration when you have little or no previous work experience?
To help millennials highlight their case for employment, Randstad is launching the Shaping Young Futures Video and Photo Competition, an innovative program which will enable young Australians to creatively showcase their unique and hidden skills to Australian businesses. The Randstad Shaping Young Futures Video & Photo competition will launch in January 2016, inviting young Australians to submit a short two minute video or photograph which will demonstrate to employers their hidden talent and why they need to look beyond their resume.
The competition provides young Australians with an opportunity to gain confidence, get constructive, honest and positive feedback – and for five lucky finalists, a one-month internship with a leading Australian business.
