Creating YOUR PERSONAL BRAND

PERSONAL BRANDING

What do these celebrities have in common? They have mastered the art of Personal Branding!!

But a more important question is, Why should you care about having a personal brand and why is it important?

Having a personal brand makes you memorable to those around you. The more memorable you are, the more in demand you are likely to be.

And the more in demand you are the more successful you will become.10

The PERSONAL BRANDING PYRAMID

How to create your personal brand11

What do I do that makes me different? What is my specialty?DETERMINE WHO YOU ARE

**Read questions form the slide**

We must identify our greatest strengths and most noteworthy personal traits. These qualities may not provide any value but is something that makes you different.

Personal branding is about determining who you are at your core authentic self, rather than inventing a brand that you would like to be perceived as.

Your specialty doesnt necessarily have to provide value to others, but is something that makes you YOU!

12

DETERMINE WHAT YOU DOWhat do I do that provides value to others? What services can I provide?

***Read questions off slide***

Do any of your specialties provide value to others?

What do I do that adds remarkable, measurable, distinguished, distinctive value? What do I do that I am most proud of?

Or in other words what do you do that others would pay for?

13

POSITION YOURSELFWhat have I done to make myself stand out?How can I make myself noticeable to my audience?

**Read questions off slide***

What would my colleagues or my customers say is my greatest and clearest strength?

It is important for you to position yourself in your best light and in front of the right audience. While promoting brand You, everything that you do or choose not to do communicates the value and character of the brand. You can do this in everything you do, from the way of handling phone calls, to the email messages, to the way of conducting business in a meeting, and even having a powerful online presence on social media sites, like LinkedIn is all part of the larger message that is sent tell others about your personal brand.

14

MANAGE YOUR BRANDIs my brand memorable?Would my audience recommend me?

**Read questions off of slide***

If your answer is no to either or both of those questions, then ask yourself what must you do to achieve a memorable and valuable brand?

To evaluate how is brand You doing it is necessary to obtain honest, helpful feedback on the brand performance, growth and value. The next step is to work to close the gap between what the brand is today and how it wants to be perceived by others.

Your network of friends, colleagues, clients, and customers is the most important marketing vehicle that your personal brand has. What they say about the brand is what the market will ultimately gauge as the value of your brand.

The personal brand must establish a place of trust and relevance in the prospective minds. The more it is believed by people, the more it will spread throughout the market without pushing.

15

BUILD AN ALL-STAR PROFILE on LINKEDIN

So now that we know how to create a personal brand, lets look at the different ways having an All-Star LinkedIn profile can help you create and maintain your personal brand.

We will go over not only the basics of LinkedIn, but also how to utilize LinkedIn feature to create a wining profile and online presence. 16

FIRST, SIGN-UP!

Choose the name you want to use professionally. Use the email address you will ALWAYS have access too. You can add alternate (company and/or employer) email addresses later.

17

CUSTOMIZE YOUR LINKEDIN URLUse your company name or your name for the customized URLExample:www.LinkedIn.com/in/FirstnameLastnamewww.LinkedIn.com/in/CompanyNameOnly use company name if it is your own businessYou will still need a personal profile first before starting a company profile

It is better to create a custom url, rather than the default url given to you by LinkedIn, that way you can give out your info and help people find your profile easily.

On the Edit Profile screen, at the bottom of the gray window that shows your basic information, youll see a Public Profile URL. Click Edit next to the URL, and specify what youd like your address to be. When youre finished, click Set Custom URL.

SeLECt your profile settingsTurn on/off your activity broadcasts

Choose who can see your updates and activity feeds

Choose how LinkedIn can contact you and send you notifications

20

YOUR public profileClick the View profile as button to view your public profile

Here you can see what your profile looks to your Connections and to the Public (non-Connections)

To edit your public profile, go to your Privacy & Settings page under the Account & Settings menu

You can customize what non-Connections see when they find or search for your LinkedIn profile

21

Keywords, keywords, keywordsThe most important thing to remember is that every word in your LinkedIn profile is optimized for searching, so choose your keywords thoughtfully and carefully. What keywords would you like to be found under?

Take a look at the job descriptions of the positions related to your current position/career, and dump them into a word cloud tool likeWordle or WordItOut. Choose the words that standout. Those are your keywords. Theyre likely what clients and peers are searching for when theyre looking for people like you. Make sure those words and phrases are sprinkled throughout your summary and experience.22

1. Headline

2. Connections

3. Summary

4. Experience

5. Education

6. Skills & Endorsements

7. Recommendations

Components ofAn All-Star Profile

The more complete your profile, the better the odds that clients will find you in the first place. So, completeness is important from that standpoint. Its also important after a client has found you and decided to click on your profile: He or she wants to know what your skills are, where youve worked, and what people think of you. So, dont get lazyfill out every single section of your profile. The good news? LinkedIn will actually measure the completeness of your profile as you work and offer suggestions on how to make it stronger.

HOW TO BECOME A LINKEDIN ALL-STAR

SKILLS &ENDORSEMENTSYour Skills and Endorsements are 5% of your All-Star profile.

You must have a minimum of 5 skills and a maximum of 50 (try to use all 50)

Remember to list software and equipment you are skilled with as well.

Endorsements can be a great way to show off your skillsas long as your profile isnt overloaded with too many to really send the right message. The secret to making them work for you is keeping your skills updated: As you transition between careers, develop new skills, or take on new responsibilities, drop outdated skills from your profile and add the ones you really want to be known for. Now, when connections land on your page, theyll only see the most relevant skills.

30

Skills and endorsementsThe more connections you have, the more likely you are to get endorsed

Like Recommendations, if you want to get Endorsements, be sure to endorse others

LinkedIn notifies the person when you endorse them

Make sure that you endorse others. 31

RECOMMENDATIONS

And giving recommendations is the best way to get them back

Your connections can vouch for your experience by endorsing these skills. Make sure you also endorse people you know on LinkedIn for skills you saw them accomplish first-hand.

33

HOW TO BECOME A LINKEDIN ALL-STAR

CONNECTIONSAll-Star

Your Connections are 5% of your All-Star profile. You need a minimum of 50 connections. The more connections you have the bigger your network.

Having 50 or fewer connections on LinkedIn tells your clients one to three things: 1) You are a recluse who knows very few people, 2) Youre paranoid about connecting with others, or 3) Technology and social media are scary to you. None of these are good

34

THE KEY FEATURES OF LINKEDIN

35

Sending invitations and messagesWhy should you personalize your messages? You are more likely to connect with new people and get a response in return

Personalize each message or invitation by including how you are connected and why you would like to connect or speak with them further

Dont just use the standard message LinkedIn generates for you when you send invitations and/or messages.

Personalize each message or invitation by including how you are connected and why you would like to connect or speak with them further

But also make sure that you keep your message concise and to the point. 36

Adding media to your profile

You can add media files to your Summary, Experience, and Projects section

You can either upload media from your PC or via a website link

You can only upload video via a website link

Its important to add media to your profile in order to showcase examples of your work experience. This will verify your credibility and experience. You can upload presentations, documents (blogs, articles, thesis, etc), photos, websites, and videos.

**Read off of slide***37
