Alright, Solo-II has started! While the day

of our first event started cold, the sun

eventually came out and warmed up

everyone, including the large crowd of

    spectators.

    Hazards included standing water, and

more sand than we could sweep. The wind

was strong too, but that mostly effected

people between runs, in the form of wind-

    burnt faces.

Jetform Park is the location for this year's

Solo-II and our 2 Performance Ground

Schools. We just had our first, and the

weather was much better than the first

Solo-II event. We had 16 very enthusiastic

drivers, some coming all the way from

    Montreal for our school.

Also happening in these past few weeks

    was Spring Fling at Shannonville

Motorsport Park. While there were a

selection of the usual MCO crews there

doing testing, a handful of MCO members

(including myself and our treasurer Bob

Benson) also took the marshall's course.

Personally, I'm not sure which was more

fun, doing actual flagging down in the

final turn before the back straight (turn

10?), or fully unloading a 10-pound firebottle into a gas fire. I'm really looking

forward to being able to apply the training

(well, not the fire bit) this summer, starting

with the Canaska Cup in July.

    PTK Racing

    Press Release:April 10, 2001For Immediate Distribution

    Paul Tracy KartingInternational Signs

Local RacerPaul Tracy Karting International [PTKI]has signed 20 year old Graham Hine ofAlmonte, Ontario as team driver in the K1[80cc] class on this year's SKUSA [Super-karts! USA] North American Pro MotoSeries which begins April 26-29 in Jack-sonville Florida. "Graham has been veryquick in his first season of shifter compe-tition and we are delighted to have him onthe team" said Canadian Champ Car acePaul Tracy. Marc Zartarian, manager ofPTKI added, "We have been veryimpressed with Graham's performance in

Florida this winter, and we expect hiswinning ways to continue with us".

Graham has been turning heads on theSKUSA Florida Winter Tour where hehas an unassailable lead in the champion-ship with one race to go. In four races hehas three wins and a third. He will becrowned champion April 21/22 at Jack-sonville, which will be a good warm upfor his first Pro Moto race the followingweekend. The Pro Moto Series will windup with the World Championships inOklahoma, September 20-23.

For the past three years Graham has beena team member of PTK Racing, gainingexperience in NCKC races at KartersKorners, Quyon and Cracow, and inQubec at the Coupe de Montral. In 2000he also did a number of races at St. Law-rence Motor Sports Park [SLMP], Morris-town, NY. The first two years with PTKwere times for development and weremarked by many "offs" [remember theQuyon Enduro Ron?], black flags, and anumber of wins. During this time he was ateam mate of MCO member Noah Watsonand the competition between the two wasfierce but friendly. The two did a lot oftesting together, sharing information,

learning how to drive at the razor's edge, all the time honing their skills and drivingthe wheels off their machines in races.Their style was a little too aggressive forthe local club, but elsewhere they wererecognized as having lots of talent. Nevercontent to languish in the middle of thepack, the lack of a competitive motor andthe money to get one caused Noah tofocus on other things - like earning a liv-ing. He is now in Calgary with FedEx.

But there's a good track out near the air-port he tells me! Graham however, hungin there, and who knows what lies aheadfor him?

Graham moved to shifters last year andholds the lap record for the 125 cc class atSLMP. "The local tracks are not reallywide enough for shifter racing. Passing isnot easy and it is difficult to avoid contactbecause the modern karts are so wide"

said Graham. "The track at SLMP andthose in Qubec and Florida are muchwider and really allow the quick drivers toshow what they are made of. But I mustadmit, the tight, narrow tracks here havehelped me a lot with my technique, and Ihave a lot of confidence to pass on widertracks".

PTK Racing is led by Graham's dad, andformer F-1 mechanic Colin Hine. Gra-ham's brother, Trevor has put in countlesshours of work on the Florida circuit keep-ing the kart in top shape for the races. "Nodoubt about it, Trevor's help has been cru-

cial to my success in Florida" said Gra-ham. The team's major sponsor is SaturnAylmer, owned by another PTK Racingdriver, Luc Romanica. "We at SaturnAylmer have been delighted to see Gra-ham mature into a consistent and quickdriver over the past year. His Floridaresults confirm that the hard work in test-ing and development has paid off. Nowthat Graham will have the excellent PaulTracy Karting chassis and a top notchmotor, he will be competitive with thebest in North America".

The PTK Racing team's objective is tonurture talented young racers in kartingprior to launching them in motor racingcompetition. Colin Hine's experience inautosports as a developer of drivers, amechanic and team owner extends backmany years. As owner of "Colin HineRacing" he took Paul Tracy and ScottGoodyear from karting to six Canadianchampionships in Formula 1600 andnumerous other wins in Formula 2000 and

Atlantic in the late '70's and '80's.

"This is a great opportunity for Graham totest himself against the top North Ameri-can competition" said Colin. " With thesupport of the Paul Tracy organization, heis ready to prove himself a driver to bereckoned with. He will have the TracyKart chassis that has already proved itselfa winner in SKUSA competition. We arestill negotiating with engine suppliers buta decision will be made soon. In any formof motor racing, if you don't have a goodengine you won't win, no matter howgood a driver you have. Just look at Jac-

ques Villeneuve's results in the last twoyears. So we are looking for the bestengine out there for Graham to use".

CART Champ Car star Paul Tracy is thefirst major player from professional racingto become a team owner and chassis man-ufacturer. The Canadian began his careerin kart racing and has expressed the desireto help give back to the sport that fueledhis own competitive fire.

Solo II Improvementsand First Solo II Event

    by Rob Microys

For those who have been at our first SoloII event already this year, you will havenoticed a new updated timing system. The current system of laptops, beams, black boxes, cabling, and other gizmoshas been updated to be more robust and'almost' monkey proof! The system wasrecabled, and installed in to an aluminumcarry case. With help from Steve Bettles,a panel was fabricated for mounting allthe connector receptacles. I completedthe remaining wiring and installation ofthe laptop. The cabling was also updatedwith new cable, and all connectorsinterfacing the lights and timing blackbox/laptop have been upgraded to higherquality connectors that should last us a

few trouble free years. Everything wastested and works great. The primaryconcern was to remove the previoussystem's 'spaghetti-style' of wiring. Thereused wires, dc-ac power inverters, powerbars and extension cords goingeverywhere - the new system has beenreduced to only three connectors one tothe battery and two to the timing lightreceivers, which makes morning setupand tear-down very simple and easy. Thenew timing system operated almostflawlessly, and we only had a few hiccupsat the end of the event with the scoringsoftware, printer, and strong winds. The

paper got jammed a couple times whileprinting causing us a bit of a delay gettingthe results out. All and all though, theupgraded equipment operated flawlessly.

The first event (April 22, 2001) was wellattended with 50 competitors. The lot atJetform Park is somewhat small, butprovided a good track for little nimblecars. The course was a two-lap course, and included a short slalom, bus stop, alarger sweeping turn, and a number oftechnical U-turns. First thing in themorning the track was quite damp, withsome standing water, and covered with avery significant amount of sand and dirt. For most of the morning setup it lookedlike we had a team of Olympic curlers outon the lot, sweeping like they werepossessed, great job guys! The firstcouple of runs were very grip limiteddespite of all the hard work and made forsome very technical driving. As the daywore on, the track became clean andtimes dropped quickly.

Lawrence King in his 1971 Lotus Elanagain dominated the field, by taking FTDon raw time. Jeff Graves in his Autoramaaward winning Miata took first overall onfactored time. The full results of Event#1 are available on the website, and alsoon page 12 of this newsletter.

Additional equipment improvements willalso be seen at the next event. Thisincludes, new tripods for the timing lightsand updated timing/scoring software, asthe current software was designed fordual courses which we have been unableto run recently due to our lots. There arealso some additional special changes thatare required for some new 'special'equipment.

That 'special' equipment is a brand newtiming display board that has been mostgraciously provided by Pat Weightman

and Plus 1 Performance. Pat theproprietor of Plus 1 Performance, aHonda/Acura specialist. The displayboard has five digits, which are fourinches high each. This display will bemounted on a tripod, and should be easilyvisible at distances up to 150 feet. Thisdisplay board will be hooked up to thetiming software which will send the timeto be displayed on the score board eachtime the stop box light is broken. Thiswill allow each competitor to beimmediately informed of their "raw time"(without penalties) as well as allow othercompetitors and spectators to get real-time updates on run times! Thanks again

to Pat and Plus 1 Performance for theirgenerosity for the display board, it willcertainly provide enjoyment foreverybody.

With these improvements, we can lookforward to a fun filled and very excitingSolo II series this year! Hope you comeout for a run!

    Autorama - A PrizeWinning Success

    by Rob Microys

April 6th, 7th, and 8th I had theportunity to work with a great bunch ofople putting on our best Autorama display

er! A large number of people were involvedthe project this year. First, I'd like to thankan McNeil (works at Wash Dynamics) whoained the most impressive booth ever! The

oth is the booth that his company uses atde shows for selling their product, carshes. It was completely made of stainlessel and aluminum, which stood 18 feet high,th huge 400W lights perched at the top of

superstructure. The display booth providedwith large stainless steel tables at eachner of the booth, with a tower in each table

aring up 18 feet to the light. It was quite ae to see, at night it was quite impressive, asprovided a large amount of light, which

ally made our booth stand out in theerdeen P avilion.

tup for the show was only on Fridayrning, which made it difficult for a lot of

ople to help out, as most of us work. I tookday off to setup the booth and coordinatework details. The booth arrived early and

up started, it was quite involved, andquired a significant amount of assembly.e booth got assembled, and most of theople took off, at that point I only had one, Jeff's Miata. The next car to arrive was thenda Civic, and finally, just a couple ofurs before the show started, Mike Merriam

ived with his racecar - I was a littlencerned at first but everybody pulledough!

fill out our 20'x40' space, we had Pateightman's Turbo Honda Civic SiR, Mikerriam's 280ZX race car, Jeff Grave's M azdaata and Bill's 80cc Shift Kart. Pat's car

was the magnet of the show, taking first placein Sport Compact, maybe it had something todo with the amazing wax job, and theincredible looking carbon fiber hood. Patworked the booth all weekend, promoting theclub and Solo II at almost every opportunity.Mike M erriam's new Z car got lots of looks, as

did Jeff's Miata and the Shifter Kart. Mike'scar won first in Production Road Racer, andJeff took home second place in CurrentConservative Sports. Way to go guys, the carswere nice and shiny!

The club really pulled together on this one, aswe won Best Club Display this year! Congratsto all involved. Of course, this sort ofachievement could not have been done withoutthe help of a lot of volunteers. Thanks to RyanMcNeil for the awesome booth, I hope w e canborrow it again in years to come! BennettLeckie and Steve Bettles were instrumental intransporting the booth to and from the show.

Bennett, Steve and Ryan all helped with thesetup, and Bennett, Steve, Chris C, and JRFortin all helped with the tear-down, thanksguys! Ron Woltman was the go-to-guy for thepaperwork and getting all the car ownerscoordinated. Pat Weightman, Mike Merriam,Jeff Graves and Bill provided the vehicles

to be drooled upon. Workers for the show shiftsfor helping to promote the club and hand outflyers included Chris Holtmsten, Basil Chiu,Sam Mandia, Gordon Acorn, AyanGangopadhyay, Erik Mckinnon, Chris K repski,Pier Bortot, Mark Wilson, Chris Capowski andJR Fortin. And what did I do? Ah...

Coordinated all the workers, pointed them inthe right direction and just sat around andwatched... Thanks again folks! Pat yourself onthe back for a job well done!

From One of the Dinosaursby David E. Butler

Hi! Believe It or Not! This is not one ofRipley's lines. My intent to writeFROM ONE OF THE DINOSAUR'Ssort of got lost in the shuffle of planshaving to be shelved for awhile. And ifyou have read the Executive Minutes, you

will know that they have accepted myresignation. When I agreed to stand for the position ofVice-President, last fall, I was notworking. Subsequently, in January, I washired by a firm called Milford Marketing.Unfortunately, the hours fluctuatedrastically sometimes from day to day orsometimes, just from week to week. It hasalways been my belief that when onetakes on a role, such as that of Vice-President and Rally Liaison, one shouldbe available at predictable times to fulfillthe function of one's accepted role. Since Icannot tell you from day to day when you

can get in touch with me, nor can Ipromise to attend regularly scheduledmeetings, I felt that I had to withdraw myservices. NO, I am not quitting the Club. Istill hope to be able to help out with someactivities on weekends - which is why Iattended the Clerk Of the Course, theOther Officials and Scrutineering Trainingwhen it was offered. In addition, I hope to

help with the MCO lapping and raceweekends at Shannonville in both Juneand July.

When I look back over all the positionsin which I have served since originallyhaving joined this Club back in 1966,this is the only position from which Ihave resigned prematurely beforecompletion of my term. In general, I am

satisfied with all of the other functions Ihave performed, such as LINK Editor (3separate times), Publisher, Director (bothappointed and elected) Chair,Entertainment Committee, Hotline Voice(about 8 consecutive years), ClubSecretary (3 years), Historian, etc, etc, etc. (Wait for The Book to be published!)

As I mentioned previously, it is not myintention to quit the Club. I did that oncein 1992 after having been a member for25 years but the death of Gary Hunt andcompletion of my first full year as astudent in one of Algonquin College'sDiploma programs shortened even that

abstention. Gary's accident occurred inJanuary, and along with Mike Lowe, wetook over as co-LINK editors around theend of April. Therefore, my non-involvement was only about one monthin duration. At that time, R. BennettLeckie had not amended ourmemberships to one full year. Previously, you joined for a full year membership,

effective from January 1st to December31st along with a 3 month lapse andnormally you re-joined in November ofthe previous year. Bennett clearlyobserved that if you were a Dry-trackRacing or Solo (I or II) competitor, thisarrangement was quite acceptable but ifyou were an Ice Racer or a Rallycompetitor, your membership mightlapse at the wrong time of the year. That

is why our year-round membershipsevolved. er, but I digress. I re-joinedin 1992 and with my currentmembership, I have been a member for34 years or to put it another way, fornearly 60% of my entire life. In all ofthat time, I have always tried to putMCO and its members first in mypriorities. In a way, I am still doing that.To serve you better, I withdrew from myposition, so that you may be betterserved. So, as I indicated previously, asVice-President, I will not be there, but asa supporter of MCO and its events, countme in and, if I am around and able tohelp, go ahead and ask. I will do what I

can whenever I am able. Moreover, I justmight write an article or two along theway. I would like to be able to declaremyself as one or the only recipient ofThe Golden Pen Award in the Seventies, the Eighties, the Nineties and the TwoThousands (0-9) and if that sets a newClub record along the way, I will behappy with my achievement.

    Editor,The Link,Motorsport Club of Ottawa

    Dear Sir:

I am writing to express my delight at havingfulfilled one of my long-standing ambitions: tobe a cover girl. You have made this come truewith your photos of me on the March cover ofThe Link. I appear in no fewer than two of yourfive photos, taken during a Winter Solo II eventat the Capital City Speedway.

I immediately ran out and got colourphotocopies of the cover, and began passingthem around to friends and colleagues. Ofcourse I met with an amazing reaction. "That's,

um, really nice, Jean," said one. "You're where? But that's a full-face helmet, with a visor," saidanother. And last, "That's your Subaru? Howcome it looks the same as the one in the photobelow?"

Despite such petty comments (jealousy, that'swhat I think), I remain delighted and willcontinue to maintain that I have achieved"cover girl" status. I'm sure you will agree.

Looking forward to participating in many moreevents, I remain yours truly,

    Jean MacGillivray

(Glad I could make your day, Jean! - ed)
