LinerBridge® Connection SystemThe fusion of steel pipe and polymer liners
Introduction
A vision of connector technology for the future
By combining its experience in fabricating
onshore and subsea pipelines and riser
systems with polymer materials technology
and fusion welding, Swagelining Limited
(SWL) has developed a genuinely novel
connector system for joining polymer lined
carbon steel stalks together.
The LinerBridge® Connection System is a step
change in weldable connector technology for
polymer lined pipelines and risers. The vision
driving the connection system development is
to make it easier to build and install polymer
lined pipelines. The LinerBridge® Connection
System comprises a number of components
that can be flexibly interchanged to suite
the pipeline architecture and construction
strategy.
The LinerBridge® Connection System is
designed to:-
• Reduce the cost of lined pipelines
• Reduce risk in fabrication and installation
of lined pipelines
• Eliminate (or reduce) corrosion resistant
alloy materials from system hardware
• Enable lined pipelines and risers to be
cut to length offshore and terminated
efficiently
• Facilitate the repair and / or replacement
of damaged sections of lined pipelines
• Make it possible to tie in additional facilities
to existing lined pipelines
New thinking delivers improvements
When compared to the existing weldable
connectors made using corrosion resistant
alloy materials, the LinerBridge® Connection
System is a revolution in connector
technology. There are three significant
differentiators underpinning the step change
from existing connector architecture:-
1. It’s made from polymer, not steel or alloy
The LinerBridge® Connector is made from
the same polymer material as the liner. It is
joined to the liner internally by fusion welding.
The result is a continuous polymer liner along
the pipeline length. Through the careful use
of insulation and heat shielding materials,
carbon steel girth welds can be made over
the LinerBridge® Connector using standard
pipeline welding processes. No purging or
specialist CRA weld operations required.

Introduction
2. To start with, finish the ends
Polymer lined end termination fittings are
completed onshore in SWL Development
Centre and shipped to site as completed
components. These are then welded to the
polymer lined pipeline as ‘pipe to pipe’ carbon
steel welds at site using the LinerBridge®
connector.
3. Any type of end termination fitting now possible
End termination flexibility for polymer lined
pipelines just got much easier. Flanged end
connections or welded end connections are
now possible. If the end connection is a Clad
or CRA fitting, SWL will line it for fitting /
welding to the end termination facility (PLET,
PLEM, Tee etc.) before the lined pipeline
is tied in. The field Tie In is now a carbon
steel ‘pipe to pipe’ weld made over the
LinerBridge® Connector.
Onshore and offshore use
The LinerBridge® connector is suitable for
onshore and offshore use. The connector
can be welded in 2G (J-Lay), 5G (S-Lay and
onshore tie ins) and 6G (Reel-lay) positions.
Bespoke s-lay and j-lay package is in
development aimed at facilitating laybarges
to install polymer lined pipelines cost
effectively through the vessel firing line. Single
(or double or quad or hex) polymer lined
carbon steel joints will be lined and connected
by welding using LinerBridge® connectors.
This option is expected to present a cost
effective alternative development option
when compared to the cost of CRA derived
pipelines.
Pre-Qualification Test Status
The LinerBridge® Connector is undergoing a
range of PQT activities as part of the drive to
qualify the system. These include fabrication
trials, reeling trials and hydrotesting of reeled
and non-reeled test strings. All testing to date
has been completed in cooperation with a
number of global EPC pipeline contractors.
Testing has been undertaken at TWI and
Heriot Watt University. Hydrotest pressures
have been undertaken at 340 bar (5000psi).
The LinerBridge® is a registered trademark.
The LinerBridge® Connector is protected
by a range of patents and pending patents
globally.
