History • In 1968 Dr. Frist, Jack Massey, and

Dr. Thomas Frist, Jr. formed their own hospital company, Hospital Corporation of America.

• The company grew rapidly and by the end of the year had 26 hospitals and over 3000 beds.

• Continuing to grow by the year 1981 HCA operated 349 hospitals with more than 49,000 beds.

History• In 1987 HCA spun off of a privately owned company

named HealthTrust, but remerged as a public company in 1992.

• In 1994 HCA merged with Columbia. • HCA became a private company for the third time

when it completed another merger. This merger was the largest buyout in history at the time. (33 billion)

• Became public again in 2011 and currently remains public
