Principal’s Report

Celebrating 100% hOPE

The 100% hOPE choir enthralled our students with a singing and

dancing concert showcasing music from Uganda. There was even an

amazing breakdancing demonstration by some of the members. In

addition to enjoying the concert, our students had the opportunity to

hear from Trishelle, the Australian teacher who founded the charity.

She spoke about how our donations have helped build classrooms

for the Ugandan students and that the next project is to build housing

for the girls. For several years now, Lindfield PS has had a close

relationship with 100% hOPE and our Social Justice group raise

funds and awareness for the charity. During the concert, some of our

students had the chance to ask the choir members questions about

life in Uganda and they were so surprised to hear how long a school

day is in Uganda and how big the classes are!

Happy Holidays

After a busy and productive term, may I wish you all a happy and

well-deserved break. Enjoy spending time with family and friends and

come back refreshed for Term 3. Thank you students,

parents/carers, teachers and administrative staff for all your hard

work this term.

Semester 1 Student Progress Reports

Semester 1 Reports to Parents were distributed yesterday. Please take the time to celebrate the

achievements of your child and set goals for next semester. You will notice some changes to the report

format which were highlighted in a previous issue of Lindfield Lines. The Letter to Parents enclosed in

your child’s report envelope outlines some of the changes.

Lindfield Blue Assembly

Yesterday we acknowledged the excellent achievements of 11 students who were awarded Lindfield

Blues. Bachaldi String Ensemble entertained us with ‘Night Shift’. Miss Mustaca presented the Silver and

Gold awards and we had so many award winners that they nearly didn’t fit on the stage! Mr Katrak spoke

about the story telling competition and presented certificates to Julie and Amy from 5/6K. Amy was a

state finalist in the competition and Julie received a Highly Commended Award.

Good News – the Pool Toilet Upgrade is About to Commence

The Pool Toilet Upgrade will take place over the school holidays. Demolition will commence Monday and

the toilets will have fresh tiles, paint, lighting and fittings. We look forward to completion early in Term 3.

A New Playground Design

Thanks to Leila and Natalie for sharing their ideas for a new playground with me. In keeping with our

healthy eating focus, it even includes a smoothie bar!

Respecting our Neighbours

Please respect our neighbours by not parking across their driveways before and after school. This

causes inconvenience to our neighbours and prevents them from using their own driveways.

Stage 1 Excursion to Rouse Hill School and Farm

Years 1 and 2 students have enjoyed experiencing school as it was in the

olden days. Even the teachers dressed up in costume and got into the spirit

of the occasion. Students also had the opportunity to investigate life on a

farm by feeding the chickens, pumping water and hanging out the washing.

Term 2 Accounts

Term 2 Accounts were issued last week. They are due by Friday 21 July.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. The Accounts Notes can

be found on the school website under the Notes tab.

Year 3 Creative Writing Workshops

Year 3 students attended Killara High School and enjoyed their intensive creative writing workshop with

Ms Loveday Recny on Monday 19 June. During the session, students learnt the essential elements of all

good short stories and then applied them to their own stories. All students came up with fun and

innovative ideas and excitedly shared these with their peers. Students then incorporated these elements

to start writing their own narratives, demonstrating their high levels of creativity and motivation to be

good writers. They ended the session with mime performances of well-known fairy tales which were

outstanding. A fun and engaging session was had by all.

Ms Loveday Recny commented on the calibre of the Lindfield Public School students and their keenness

to write. She really enjoyed providing this workshop to such enthusiastic students.

Earn and Learn

We are excited to be taking part in the 2017 Woolworths Earn & Learn program.

During the previous campaign, we were able to purchase some great resources with the points we

earned, thanks to you.

From 26 July until September 19 2017, you can collect stickers at Wooloworths that go towards Earn &

Learn points. For every $10 you spend at Woolworths (excluding the purchase of tobacco, liquor and gift

cards), you will receive a sticker. These stickers can then be given to your children to collect on a special

sticker card. Once it is completed, they can simply bring it back here to school to the front office or you

can drop them into Gordon Woolworths LPS collection box.

The more points we earn, the more we can redeem from a choice of over 10,000 educational resources

including Mathematics and English resources, art & crafts materials and much, much more! We are

grateful for your support and look forward to a successful program.

Dance

The Junior Show Troupe, Boys Hip Hop Crew, Infants Troupe and Senior Show Troupe should all be

incredibly proud of their efforts on Sunday when they all danced at the Opera House. They had all the

right moves, looked dazzling in their outfits and made the audience smile! It is very hard to get a placing

at this competition as everyone that gets invited to dance at the Opera House is at an extremely high

level. The results from the competition were as follows.

Infants Troupe- First Place

Junior Show Troupe - Highly Commended

Senior Show Troupe - Highly Commended

Boys Hip Hop Crew - received encouraging feedback

Plant a Tree Day

We are looking for donations of gumboots, succulents and wooden picture frames. If you have an

outdoor seating setting that you no longer need please get in touch with one of the Deputy Principals.

Please see the photo below of what we plan to do on Plant a Tree Day with your donations.

ThinkUKnow Cyber Safety Presentation

During the recent Think U Know - Cybersafety Presentation it was suggested that parents look at the

iParent website https://www.esafety.gov.au/iparent which is part of the Office of the Children’s eSafety

Commissioner.

The https://www.esafety.gov.au/iparent website has information and resources to help parents

understand their child’s technology use. It has guidance for using safety settings on devices and tips to

help young people stay safe online. The site

also covers the big issues as well, beyond

the basic issues of internet safety.

There are several sections that are a ‘must

read’ for all parents

iParent Staying safe

iParent Online Risk

iParent Online safeguards

iParent Staying safe Balancing time online

Home eSafety information Games, apps and social networking

iParent Multimedia reviews Movies and games

At the presentation, a parent questioned the safety of the school’s internet access especially with

regards to Bring Your Own Devices (BYOD). The school’s internet access is closely controlled and

monitored by the Department of Education Web Services Unit. The unit provides a safe Filtered Internet

Browsing experience which restricts student access to social media sites and other sites such as

YouTube. Google searches on school devices are done with Google’s ‘SafeSearch’ option enabled. All

internet traffic -- including traffic from BYOD devices -- goes through the Filtered Internet

Browsing servers, which will restrict access to safe websites.

Students also agree to a Code of Conduct

when going online. The intent of the Code

of Conduct is to address cyber-bullying and

inappropriate use of technology, while

reinforcing the message of seeking adult

help so appropriate action can be taken. It

outlines coping strategies for when a child

sees anything that makes them feel

uncomfortable.

Conditions of Use

When going online I agree to follow these rules.

No to looking for, reading, sending or linking to anything rude, scary or unkind

Go to a responsible adult if I see anything rude, scary or unkind

Tell a responsible adult about anything I receive, send or read that makes me feel uncomfortable

Anaphylaxis at Lindfield Public School

At Lindfield Public School in 2017, we have a small number of children with a potentially life threatening allergic reaction. They are found across our school from Kindergarten to Year 6. How can parents help these children?

If possible, choose alternative sandwich spreads to peanut butter and Nutella. If you have no alternative, inform your child that these foods can trigger an anaphylactic reaction.

Reinforce the school’s NO FOOD SHARING message.

Social Justice

Thank you to everyone from 100% hOPE for your incredible support this week. Trishelle, the charity’s

founder, is deeply grateful and said it will make a fantastic contribution towards building homes for the

girls so they don’t need to live in classrooms. Thank you to our school executive for their hard work to

make this event possible.

There were many memorable moments as LPS students enjoyed the singing, dancing and drumming.

The breakdancing was a highlight and we all learnt about how different life is in Uganda! Our students

asked very interesting questions of the Ugandan students, discovered some new dance moves and had

fun interacting in the playground. Our Hip Hop Boys Group had a special breakdance lesson at

lunchtime, while others enjoyed chatting, soccer, netball, tip and catch!

The Celebrate Hope concert last night at Killara High raised $10,580!

Thank you to Ms Miggins and our senior choir for their beautiful singing at this special Killara School Partnership event.

The Lindfield Public School Social Justice cake stall raised $506 of the total thanks to the talented and generous bakers and supporters Verena C, Sharkari C, Geraldine W, Janet H, Kristine B, Lynn M, Zoe C, Antonia C, Lachlan E and Luke E.

Thank you also to Nadja L and Natascha P for their support and hard work.

Please visit www.100-hope.org if you would like to make a tax deductible contribution or would like more

information.

We will share fun photos of this busy week in the next edition of Lines!

100% hOPE will perform at The Rocks Market (end of George St) at 10am Saturday and at St Andrews,

Canteen

Canteen Specials Day - THANK YOU

Thank you to our wonderful volunteer mums who cooked up a storm for our delicious first ever Korean Food Specials Day and to everyone who supported this event.

Canteen Volunteers required in Term 3

To enable us to continue offering great food and service we need volunteers (mums, dads, grandparents, carers etc). Join up and meet our fun and supportive team of Canteen volunteers. You can help out once a month or once a term or whatever suits you. Generally the hours are 8:30am to 2:30pm. Come in for a power hour, a morning or an afternoon. Each volunteer will get a free lunch, endless tea or coffee, great company and best of all the beaming smile on your child’s face when they see you in the Canteen. Or just pop into the Canteen any time to discuss options and to check the Canteen out. If you can spare any time to help out it would be really appreciated. We URGENTLY need volunteers for next term so if you are available please sign up on our Volunteers page on the P&C website here

The Canteen will be going to Flexischools in Term 3 for all lunch orders

Just a reminder that the Canteen will be moving 100% to Flexischools for all lunch orders from Tuesday, 18 July (first day of Term 3). All lunch orders must be placed online and paid for via Flexischools by 8:30am each morning. Orders can be placed in advance, so you can set up orders for a week, a month or even for the whole term. Cash will still be accepted for over the counter snacks, frozens, drinks etc at recess and lunch for Years 3-6. Please do not hesitate to pop into the Canteen if you have any questions. CLOTHING POOL VOLUNTEERS WANTED!!

Can you spare 1 or 2 hours each TERM to help us at Clothing Pool in 2017?

Assisting parents and children of the school with buying uniforms for an hour once (or twice) per term is

all there is to it! No prior experience is required. Volunteers will be assisted by our Shop Manager, Greti,

who will operate the computer and knows where everything is! We are also flexible if there is a period

you can’t attend due to other commitments.

Volunteers are welcome to bring pre-school ‘helpers’ and the Clothing Pool has a toy box to entertain

them. Let us know if you will be bringing a regular little helper and we won’t schedule you on super busy

weeks to ensure no one is trodden underfoot.

Clothing Pool is a fun and easy way to become involved in the Lindfield Public School community without

a major time commitment.

If you are able join us, please e-mail [email protected] with your name, phone numbers (mobile

and home), e-mail address and available days (Wednesday or Thursday or either) or sign up on our

It’s HOLIDAY TIME!!!

There is often a misconception that holidays are down time. I agree! Holidays are there to recharge,

especially after this very hectic term. The children are tired and getting sick and all they want to do is break

away from the routines of their school lives. I totally get this!!! Please read the following article and take on

board that MUSIC IS GOOD FOR US and requires practice. https://nafme.org/why-students-really-quit-their-

musical-instrument-and-how-parents-can-prevent-it/

It’s a good idea to help your child establish a practice routine so that they know that they still must practice

during the holidays. As it is holidays, why don’t you reduce the time they practice. You could do 10

minutes/day, or make it 20 minutes every second day. Whatever works for you and your family. When we

have a break from practice, our fingers stop being exercised and when we get back to it, it is just so much

more difficult. It’s taking five steps back to where we were before the holidays. Consistency is the key.

Consider your own lives. If you are someone who likes to exercise and you take a break from it, it is much

harder to get your fitness back on top when you restart. Musicians also need to be fit – physically and

mentally. I will get off my soap box now! HAVE A WONDERFUL, RESTFUL HOLIDAY!

BACHALDI DOES IT AGAIN

Congratulations to our combined ensemble (Vivaldi and Bach) for their beautiful performance at the Lindfield

Blue Assembly.

Volunteers needed:

Term 3 has two major events and we are looking to secure some leaders to volunteer their time. Open Day

is August 2 and the Election Day Cake Stall is September 9. If you would like to help, please let us know

ASAP.

Please note the dates below for the term:

Term 2: April 26– June 30 o June 29 – VIVALDI FoIM musicians rehearsal at Croydon Public
