Year 5 Girls in Science

Some Year 5 girls from LPS went to Killara High School where Year 8 girls from Killara High School mentored our girls through two different science experiments. In one laboratory, the students worked with Ms Arora and the Year 8 helpers to create an experiment using water beads and other materials, including bicarbonate soda, sucrose and white vinegar. Our girls chose which of these materials they would test. Some groups tested if the water beads absorbed colour from food dye and some other groups tested how the white vinegar affected the texture of the water beads. There were countless amounts of amazing experiments going on and it was a very good learning experiment for the girls as well as being a lot of fun. In the other laboratory, students worked with Dr Tran and the Year 8 helpers to conduct an experiment on what affects the swing rate of a pendulum. Our girls were able to change the length of the string, change the angle of the pendulum and increase the weight of the pendulum. They were able to fill in result tables and make scientific observations about the experiment just as you do in high school. They learnt the value of repeating experiments and working in groups. They were introduced to the scientific method and the concept of a fair test. (Written by Mia M, Fran G and Brianna W of Year 8 Killara HS)

‘Meet the Teacher’ Sessions

Thank you for attending our ‘Meet the Teacher’ evenings last week. It was great to be able to share our

plans and routines with you. The students have settled so well into the school year that it is hard to

believe we are already more than halfway through the term. Should you wish to follow up any issues with

your child’s teacher, feel free to make an appointment.

Lindfield Harris Farm opened today and showcased our Artwork

Last year, several budding artists were invited to paint some fruits and vegetables on a mural for the new

Harris Farm shop at Lindfield. It opened today and it was lovely to see their hard work on display and the

acknowledgement of our school students. Well done boys and girls!

Deputy Principals’ Report

Young Leaders’ Day

On Monday the Captains, Vice Captains and Prefects attended the Young Leaders’ Day Conference in

the city along with over 100 other schools. They were lucky to have the opportunity to listen to some

inspirational leaders talk about their journeys in life and how they overcame some challenges along the

way before becoming a leader. They heard the inspirational story of John Coutis who was born with no

legs. He spoke about finding inner strength to go on and that no matter what challenge lies in front of

you, never turn your back on it. They also heard from Lauren Cheatle who is the youngest member of

the Sydney 6’s cricket team. She spoke about how normal it is to make mistakes and that she lives by

the saying ‘if it doesn’t challenge you- it won’t change you’. Harrison Craig who was the winner of ‘The

Voice’ spoke about how to pursue a dream and how to overcome hurdles in your life and Matt Cosgrove,

a famous writer and illustrator spoke about five important things he believed were important for leaders. I

have listed these below:

1. Stay positive

2. Find your passion and practice

3. People are important

4. Be persistent

5. Imagination can help us

Our student leadership team has learnt some

amazing lessons this week and is looking forward

to putting some great ideas into action this year.

Please read some reflections of the day written by

our Prefects later on in the Lines.

2018 Student Leadership Team

National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence

A national Anti-Bullying Day of Action is being held on Friday 16

March 2018, with the theme of ‘imagine a world free from bullying’.

Students in their classes will learn about strategies to identify and

prevent bullying. They will complete tasks to enhance their own

understanding around this complex issue. Students from Years 1-6

will receive a wrist band and a pocket tip sheet of ways to combat

bullying.

Leading up to this day, students have taken part in a performance

called ‘The Magic Words' which emphasised the value of using

positive language and showing respect.

At Lindfield Public School we aim to deliver a powerful message to

students that bullying and violence is never okay. The following

website is a wonderful resource which you may like to explore at

home. https://bullyingnoway.gov.au/. This day of action is our

chance to stand together with schools around the nation to unite us

in tackling bullying as mentioned in the media and the letter to all

principals from Prime Minister Mr Turnbull and Educational Minister Mr Birmingham.

Harmony Day

All students will celebrate Harmony Day on Wednesday 21 March next week. Harmony Day celebrates

Australia’s cultural diversity. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. The

theme is ‘Everyone Belongs’ and we invite students to wear a ‘splash of orange’ on this day.

P.A.L.S. (Playground Activity Leaders in Schools)

To continue supporting our Kindergarten students, Year 6 volunteers are providing valuable

guidance to K-2 students in their new role as clearly identified by their colourful vests.

P.A.L.S. are reinforcing school expectations, resolving conflict and engaging with

enthusiasm. We are grateful for their mature commitment to creating happy and safe

playgrounds, for all students. This program will start on Monday next week.

Online NAPLAN Practice

Next Wednesday, students in Years 3 and 5 will take part in Online NAPLAN practice. These sessions

will be used to make students feel confident and comfortable in using the online platform. The tests are

not marked and no data will be recorded.

The School Photographer Class Photos

All class photographs will be taken on Thursday, 22 March. Please return

individual student envelopes to your child’s class teacher immediately. Please

ensure that an individual envelope is completed for each child if you have

more than one child at the school. If you would like to order sibling photos,

please obtain a separate ‘SIBLINGS ONLY’ photo envelope from the office

and return it to Miss Mustaca. These photos will be taken during lunch time on

the same day. Full summer school uniform needs to be worn on photo day.

No sports uniforms on Thursday please. If paying online, please go to the ‘The

School Photographer’ website: www.theschoolphotographer.com.au.

High School EOI and Selective High School Tests

Year 6 students received their High School forms last week. Please complete the forms and return them

to your child’s class teacher NO LATER THAN FRIDAY 16 MARCH 2018. This allows us time to

process the forms before forwarding them on to the high schools. If any details on the form are incorrect

or if you have any questions, then please contact Miss Mustaca immediately.

The test for entry into Selective High School in 2019 will take place this Thursday 15 March. Parents and

carers will receive a note today with more information about the tests.

Summer PSSA and Training

This is the last week of Summer PSSA. Congratulations to all students who took part and thank you to

our coaches. Therefore there will be no training after this week. Try outs for Winter PSSA sports will take

place on Friday next week.

Young Leaders’ Day Reflections

Throughout the day today, I realised how lucky I was to be going to a school where bullying is definitely

not tolerated. What made me think of this was when I listened to John Coutis talk about his childhood

and his experience with bullying. John Coutis was born with his legs all bent and in the wrong direction.

When he was born he was the size of an adult’s hand. This made doctors think that he would not live to

the next day. But thankfully, John Coutis is still here to tell the story of his childhood. Now he is 48 years

old while he wasn’t expected to live even one day. When John was 10 years old he arrived at school and

some bullies took him and physically hurt him. This is one of the many reasons why I appreciate being at

such a great school as this would absolutely not happen here. Later in life John got bullied again when

he had to go to hospital because some bullies hurt his legs. This was the day John decided to get his

legs cut off. While listening to John he told us two fantastic quotes. The first one is ‘know what is right,

know what is wrong, it’s your choice’. I like this quote because it’s telling you, you know both options and

you chose one. The second one is ‘treat others how you wish to be treated’. I also love this because it

tells you if you wish to be treated like John was, then treat others that way. But if you don’t then don’t

expect to be treated like that. The lesson that I took out of listening to John was that your actions, words,

ideas, play, effort, mistakes and behaviour are always your choice and you should treat others the way

you wish to be treated.

Eliza T

At the National Young Leaders’ Day Convention, I learnt so much and got inspired by some phenomenal

people who always make it through any hard times and challenges that they come across. At the

convention there were over 5000 school leaders! The speaker that really stood out to me was John

Coutis, because he was born extremely small and had deformed legs. He went through a really hard,

unimaginable childhood and got bullied terribly. He believes that you should never turn your back on a

challenge and always treat others the way you want to be treated. He taught everyone that there are

certain things you can’t control but you can control your own actions. John believes that setting goals is

really important and that they create direction, purpose and strength. His talk gave myself and many

others further motivation to try and be inclusive and act sensibly. He taught us not to take things for

granted and that not everything is easy. Some other speakers were Lauren Cheatle an Australian

cricketer who is only 19, Matt Cosgrove who is an incredible author and illustrator and Harrison Craig the

winner of ‘The Voice’ 2013. They all taught me so many lessons and I believe they are amazing role

models and some of their important quotes are;

Lauren Cheatle - “if it doesn’t challenge you it won’t change you”.

Harrison Craig - “no matter what your challenges are you can get over them and live your

dream”.

Matt Cosgrove “The 6 P’s: Perception is everything. Stay Positive. Find your Passion. People are

important. Be Persistent. Most things are Possible if you put your mind to it.”

John Coutis - “treat people the way you want to be treated.”

I enjoyed my experience so much they inspired me to be the best person I could be.

2018 Premier’s Reading Challenge

Well done to the following students who have completed their Student Reading Record:

K-2 3-4 5-6

Liam K

Renee T

To assist and encourage all K-2 students to take part in the Challenge, books read in class and in Library

will be added to student lists by the Teacher Librarians as they are read. So please do not be concerned

if you see different books added to your child’s list that you have not entered yourself.

The number of books each student is required to read can be seen below:

All books will need to be logged online via the NSW PRC website using your child’s individual logon

details. This is the same username and password they use to access computers and the internet at

school. Years 3-6 students will be given time to complete their records online during Library lessons.

All students who complete the challenge will be given special mention in the school newsletter and will

receive an official certificate in Term 4. Years 3-6 now also have their own ‘Wall of Fame’ in our school

library!

For more information, check out the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge website:

www.premiersreadingchallenge.nsw.edu.au

Please do not hesitate to contact or see us in the library if you have any questions or issues with logging

in or entering titles!

Good luck and happy reading!

Minecraft Education Edition

Last week 6D students were lucky enough to trial the new ‘Minecraft Education Edition’ in class. To

begin with, the students, in groups of four, were tasked with creating a mathematically themed theme

park. These theme parks were recorded on a two-dimensional map, using specific kilometre

measurements and a planning grid. Once all groups had finalised their designs and presented a

proposal the entire class went to the computer room to begin creating three-dimensional models of their

theme parks using Minecraft! Mr Smith went through a range of important rules and procedures for the

students to follow whilst they created their models on the Minecraft system and then created a single

server for the class. This single server system allowed for close observation of the groups as they

created their three-dimensional models of their theme parks and allowed Mr Smith to announce

instructions to the class that would pop up on their screen. The groups still have more work to complete

until their three-dimensional theme parks are finished and ready for a final presentation. ‘Minecraft

Education Edition’ is a very exciting program that will provide students and teachers with an endless

amount of opportunities to complete 21st century learning in a fun and exciting way!

Anaphylaxis at Lindfield Public School At Lindfield Public School in 2018, we have a small number of children with a potentially life threatening

allergic reaction. They are found across our school from Kindergarten to Year 6.

How can parents help these children?

If possible, choose alternative sandwich spreads to peanut butter and

Nutella. If you have no alternative, inform your child that these foods can trigger

an anaphylactic reaction.

Reinforce the school’s NO FOOD SHARING message.

Please note, no students are allowed to bring glass bottles to

school for safety reasons.

INVITATION TO ALL PARENTS AND

CARERS - P&C AGM/GENERAL MEETING

The P&C’s Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday

22 March at 7:30pm in the staff room. All parents and carers

are invited to attend. Please see the agenda attached.

At the AGM, the 2017 Annual Reports will be presented, and

office-bearer and sub-committee representatives will be

elected. We welcome nominations for all positions.

Taking an active role in the P&C is very rewarding. It is also a great way to get to know other parents

and a good opportunity to learn more about the school. It is vital that these volunteer roles are filled.

Our first General Meeting for the year will immediately follow the AGM. For those of you who are new

parents to our school, we would like to welcome you to attend P&C meetings, not only so that we can

hear from you, but also so that you can learn more about the school and its positive attitudes towards

students and their families. Our P&C meetings are relaxed and we welcome discussion on issues. It is

through our active P&C that we are able to work with the Principal, teachers and staff to create a

positive school environment and to create policies which reflect the attitudes and values of the entire

school community.

Below is a summary of our 2017 Executive Members and Sub-Committee Convenors, and the current
