In Mrs Johnsonrsquos classes students are busy learning about how matter is measured

They are working on being able to find the mass volume and density of objects

We will wrap up our exploration of measurement by doing a Harry Potter potions lab

and creating density columns We will soon begin to explore the main states of

matter solid liquid and gas

Mr Garciarsquos classes have been busily exploring the different states of matter

including trying to identify exactly how to classify slime They will soon begin

working with scientific measurement and density

Below are key vocabulary words our students will be assessed on throughout this

unit of study

These are the unit objectives we are currently working on

1 Understand that everything is made of matter and that atoms are the basic

building block of matter

2 List and describe the three phases of matter

3 Define mass and describe how it is measured including units

4 Define volume and describe how it is measured including units

5 Define density and describe how it is measured including units

In geography we are starting our North America Unit The conceptual question for

this unit is How does where you live affect how you live Students will be collecting

data about North American countries and will be using that data to make inferences

about the quality of life in these various countries Statistics to be collected include

life expectancy literacy rate physician density GDP per capita and unemployment

rate among others After analyzing the data students will complete a writing

assignment comparing quality of life in two countries and create an infographic using

the program Piktochart After completing a writing assignment we will spend time

on the debatable question for this unit What leads to happiness We love teaching

this unit as it gets kids thinking about the world and their place in it

We started this month with a trip to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science

Students had a great time exploring the African exhibits and connecting what they saw

to what we have learned in the classroom Our 7th grade Social Studies classes are

about to begin a service learning project After focusing on disparity in our Unit of

study on Africa students will be creating Books of Hope Students will choose a topic

and will create a digital book which we will be sending to a school in Africa through a

contact Ms Israelson is connected to Each student will be required to research

information on the topic they have picked They will spend time in their English

classes writing and revising their books and they will be adding their own original

illustrations to their books The final products will be sent off to Africa In years past

they have been used by students in Ghana It is an exciting project that brings lots of

pride to our students Be sure to ask you child about their progress and final product

Mrs Mills 7th Grade World Geography

We are currently exploring the world of genetics The students are experimenting with

genetics through multiple hands-on activities Students have demonstrated genetics in

class through the following labs Gregor Mendelrsquos inheritance lab mouse genetics (one

trait) gizmos online lab and a face lab The inquiry the students have developed thus far

in the genetics unit has shown an independence in their learning There is never a dull

moment when discussing the passage of traits from one generation to the next The goal

is to put the students into a position where they can create a website and communicate

confidently as a genetic counselor to a couple considering kids based on a family

genetic disorder Ask your students about the fun interactions happening in science and

remind them of the upcoming genetics project

Dear Family

An emergency evacuation plan is required in most commercial buildings A good plan

shows the locations of exits in the building as well as the locations of fire extinguishers

and other emergency equipment The plan is usually shown on a scale drawing of the

buildingrsquos floor plan

Creating an emergency evacuation plan for your home is a good idea as well You and

your student can work together to make a scale drawing of your home

Continued

Lincoln Newsletter PAGE 10 FEBRUARY 2017

Mark the exits fire extinguishers and any alarms in red If you have emergency

medical equipment available such as a first aid kit mark those in blue

Ask your student to help you with the following

Make measurements of each room in the home Include measurements of doors

and windows that will work as exits

Convert your measurements to the scale you have chosen

Draw the plan on 1 4 -inch graph paper The sides of each square have a length

of 1 4 -inch which makes it easier to use for 1 4 -inch and 1 8 -inch scales

Its a good idea to include other information on the plan as well such as the numbers

for fire paramedic and police services (provided by 911 in many towns) Work with

your student to decide what information should be included Being prepared will

give you great peace of mind

Dear Family

Have you ever stood in line for hours for a 2ndash3 minute ride on a roller coaster How

did you feel after the ride was over Have you ever thought about how a roller

coaster works

Besides the initial pull up the first big hill a roller coaster is driven by forces of

nature The coaster stores energy (this is known as potential energy) as it is climbing

the big hill preparing for its decent down the other side The energy of motion is

known as kinetic energy The coaster converts potential energy to kinetic energy

back and forth as it progresses through the loops hills and valleys of the track In

return the coaster accelerates and decelerates producing a strange sensation for the

rider The force of gravity also plays an important role in the thrill of the ride

The designers of roller coasters use physics to design and build not only a ride for

the thrill seekers but they must make it a safe ride They must make accurate

calculations following the basic laws of physics

1 Use the Internet to do a search to find the equations designers use to determine

potential energy and kinetic energy Identify what the variables represent in each

equation

2 Research the effects that hills loops and valleys have on the body If you are a

thrill seeker is it better to sit in the front middle or back of a roller coaster

3 Find a website that allows you to build your own roller coaster Use what you

have learned to see if you can design a safe thrill-seeker roller coaster

Amusement parks are filled with rides and attractions that utilize the concepts you

will learn about in this chapter The next time you crest the first hill of a roller

coaster remember you are experiencing math (and science) in motion

An emergency evacuation plan is required in most commercial buildings A good plan

shows the locations of exits in the building as well as the locations of fire extinguishers

and other emergency equipment The plan is usually shown on a scale drawing of the

Creating an emergency evacuation plan for your home is a good idea as well You and

Make measurements of each room in the home Include measurements of doors

and windows that will work as exits

Convert your measurements to the scale you have chosen

Draw the plan on 1 4 -inch graph paper The sides of each square have a length

of 1 4 -inch which makes it easier to use for 1 4 -inch and 1 8 -inch scales

Its a good idea to include other information on the plan as well such as the numbers

5 Define density and describe how it is measured including units

this unit is How does where you live affect how you live Students will be collecting

data about North American countries and will be using that data to make inferences

about the quality of life in these various countries Statistics to be collected include

life expectancy literacy rate physician density GDP per capita and unemployment

rate among others After analyzing the data students will complete a writing

assignment comparing quality of life in two countries and create an infographic using

did you feel after the ride was over Have you ever thought about how a roller

coaster works

US History

This month 8th grade US History students will be diving into our US Constitution

and Bill of Rights as the governing document of our land This unit is particularly

applicable because the document has not changed much in hundreds of years so

studying it then is almost the same as studying it now Here the past meets the

present We always enjoy a visit from officer Boyd when we cover the Bill of Rights

to get the legal perspective from an expert

8th Grade Science

Recently in 8th grade Science students put on their detective hats to research

Energy Enigmas Their cooperative learning activity incorporated critical thinking

skills as the students tried to conceal their own energy source while guessing the

opposing teamsrsquo sources In the coming weeks we will delve further into types of

waves as we focus on light and sound with various hands-on labs and activities

Math

Math 8 students have just completed the unit on Systems of Equations We wrapped

that unit up by analyzing three different burger companies to assess which has the

best deal price wise We will start February by understanding exponent rules and

scientific notation

Algebra I is beginning to work with Polynomials We will spend most of the month

of February understanding how to operate with different polynomials as well as start

diving into Quadratic Equations

8th

Grade English

Happy February In English were still working through Night Now that we have

built a bunch of background knowledge about World War 2 and the Holocaust were

deep into the novel Within our study of the book were specifically looking at the

themes of identity dehumanization and collective responsibility Again given the

nature of the content were covering Wed encourage you to just ask your students

about what theyre learning Have a great month
