DOWNTOWN

Opening its doors just a few weeks ago, Lilac Patisserie in downtown Santa Barbara has made waves
with its deliciously pretty glutenfree treats. Specializing in gorgeous cakes of all different flavors, owners
Gillian and Alam Muralles wanted to create a bakery that was a "safe place" for glutenfree eaters while
not losing the fun of enjoying cake. Muralles has celiac disease so she has dealt with dietary restrictions
all of her life, and after graduating from culinary school in 2009, she wanted to combine her love of
growing up baking with her mother with easily accessible and tasty glutenfree desserts that everyone
can enjoy.

No stranger to concerns about different taste and loss of flavor by going the glutenfree route, Muralles
says, "I challenge the skeptics to come in and give [our cakes] a shot…they won't be disappointed!"
Walking into the warm and welcoming bakery, I immediately noticed the sleek, clean walls and openness
of the high ceilings. The interior of the patisserie is painted a delicate purple that accentuates the
intimate atmosphere and the clear glass shelves lined with all sorts of colorful cakes draw in passerby on
State Street. The patisserie also offers an assortment of breads, muffins, scones, macaroons and trifles,
not to forget their brownie cheesecake, a definite fan favorite! During the holidays, orders for custom
holiday cookies, Yule logs, and delicious 4th of July blueberry pies flow in nonstop. Custom birthday
cakes are available too, and the decorators can take designs brought in by customers and recreate them
on intricate cakes for loved ones.
Muralles's favorites include the berry patch cake, an orangeinfused yellow butter cake filled with layers
of fresh berries and whipped cream, yet she claims that choosing a favorite is like picking between
children: she loves them all equally! Alam and Gillian are experienced bakers and watching her decorate
the gorgeous red velvet cake with elegant frosting poppies was quite the intriguing sight. Muralles
mentions how frequently she will find hand and nose prints on the glass plates surrounding the rightmost
cake decorating table from children accompanying their parents running errands, watching with delight.
Along with delectable treats, the patisserie also offers homebrewed coffee, fresh tea and fruity jams.
Muralles excitedly speaks of future plans to potentially add a breakfast and lunch menu, once the bakery
gets settled into its new space and can plan for expansion.
The bakery is open Tuesday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the employees always greet with a
smile. Judging by its incredible, custommade cakes and mouthwatering baked goods, come see for
yourself how Lilac Patisserie has set the standard for tasty glutenfree desserts.
