Transcript of Lightweight, waterproof tile backer for showers and ......• Not intended for exterior applications...
Tiled showers and bathtub surrounds require proper moisture management to ensure successful long-term performance. KERDI-BOARD is light-weight, easy to cut, inherently waterproof and vapor-retardant, thus greatly reducing the prep work required to create an ideal substrate for the application of tiles in wet areas.
Multifunctional tile substrate
- Waterproof and vapor-retardant
- Thermally insulating, reduces heat loss
- Dimensionally stable
Simplifies tile installation
- Lightweight, easy-to-handle and transport
- Easy-to-cut and dust-free
- Printed gridlines for precise cutting
- Quick and easy to install

Lightweight, waterproof tile backer for showers and bathtub surrounds.Schluter®-KERDI-BOARD
Material properties:KERDI-BOARD consists of an extruded polystyrene foam panel, with a special reinforcement facer on both sides and fleece webbing for effective anchoring in thin-set mortar.
Application:The 1/2" thick (12.5 mm) KERDI-BOARD can be applied over existing gypsum or masonry walls, wood stud framing, and other finished wall surfaces for bathtub and shower surrounds.
Requirements:Structures on which KERDI-BOARD is to be installed must be stable and meet local building code and any other project-specific requirements.
IMPORTANT: The maximum allowable stud spacing for the application of KERDI-BOARD is 16" (40 cm). Stud spacing exceeding 16" will require the placement of additional studs to meet this requirement.

InstallationThe following instructions include the steps necessary to install KERDI-BOARD over wood framing within a bonded waterproofing assembly.
Applying KERDI-BOARD over wood stud framing
KERDI-BOARD can be mounted vertically or horizontally on wood framing with the KERDI-BOARD screw and washer hardware set.
IMPORTANT: Stud spacing exceeding 16" requires the placement of additional studs.
Abut the individual panels over the center of the studs or other solid backing. Screws may be placed between adjacent panels such that the washers fasten both panel edges.
The maximum allowable on-center spacing for fasteners:
Vertical: 12" (30 cm)
Horizontal: 16" (40 cm)

• KERDI-BOARD screw and anchor set (40 units each)
• KERDI-BAND
• Utility knife
• Level
• Power drill and mixing paddle
• Trowel to set the tiles (See store associate on trowel size appropriate to set your tile)
• Margin trowel
• KERDI-FIX or equivalent sealant
1 Unmodified thin-set mortar
All KERDI components and tiles must be installed using an unmodified thin-set mortar meeting ANSI A118.1 (no premixed mortar).
• Not intended for exterior applications • Not intended for floor applications• 1/2" (12.5 mm) thick KERDI-BOARD not suitable for use as support for partition walls, shower benches, etc.
• Certain glass tiles, moisture-sensitive stones, e.g., green marble, or resin-backed tiles may not be compatible with the KERDI system or may require special setting materials. Consult tile manufacturer and Schluter Systems for more information.
• If installing bathroom fixtures such as grab bars in showers, or other heavy objects, the fixtures must be anchored in the structure or solid blocking behind KERDI-BOARD.
Joints, corners, and fastener penetrations must be sealed with KERDI-BAND using unmodified thin-set mortar1. The KERDI-BAND must overlap panel joints and fastener penetrations by at least 2" (5 cm).

Shower base
Floor/wall connections must be sealed with KERDI-BAND using unmodified thin-set mortar1. The BAND must overlap joints by at least 2" (50 mm).
Bathtub surround
Construct tub/wall connections by placing painter’s tape along the tub deck and leaving a 1/4" (6 mm)-wide gap between KERDI-BOARD and tub. Apply unmodified thin-set mortar1 to the KERDI-BOARD and completely fill the 1/4" (6 mm)-wide gap with KERDI-FIX or an equivalent sealant.
Shower niches
Use KERDI-BOARD to create a niche, ensuring that all corners and joints are sealed with KERDI-BAND using unmodified thin-set mortar1.
Mixing valve and pipe protrusions
Install KERDI-SEAL-PS at the shower head and body sprays, etc, and KERDI-SEAL-MV at the mixing valve. As an alternative, KERDI-FIX or an equivalent sealant can be used to seal pipe protrusions.
Solidly embed KERDI-BAND in the unmodified thin-set mortar1 and KERDI-FIX (or equivalent sealant).
Repeat the same procedure for vertical tub/wall connections.
