Smart City What is it?

There is no definative, universially accepted definition of a Smart City

A definition I like is:

Cities that provide core infrastructure and give a decent quality of life to its citizens, a clean and sustainable environment and application of ‘Smart’ Solutions

Core Infrastructure can include:

• assured electricity supply,• efficient urban mobility and public transport,• affordable housing• robust IT connectivity and digitalization,• good governance, especially e-Governance and citizen participation,• sustainable environment,• safety and security of citizens, particularly women, children and the

elderly,• health and education

Smart City Potential?

• CMS systems are now becoming commonplace• Dynamic lighting (on demand) is possiable but not yet implemented• Variable lighting levels are established, but still not widely accepted• LED technology allows instant start up and dimming• Capital budgets available for Invest to Save technology implementation

Smart City Dream or Reality?

Imagine working in a skyscraper that turns up the lights as you leave the elevator, perfectly adjusts temperature and humidity to suit the number of people in your office

With a building automation system that uses IoT, you could have an integrated solution that senses and adjusts heat and humidity based on the number of people that have entered the building.

IoT enables enhancements that go beyond building operations to provide owners, operators, or tenants with information about the flow and movement of people in a structure. This capability could offer a major advantage to retail tenants. With data gleaned from sensors, a store could track the behavior of customers to understand, for example, how long they look at a particular display or where they go after that. Tracking movements of many customers could enable a store to generate metrics that reveal what percentage of people viewing the display converts into sales or to provide information that helps stores better serve their customers.

Smart City Dream or Reality?

Imagine that your home security system lets you know when your kids get home from school. As they’re grabbing an afternoon snack, your kitchen takes inventory and sends a shopping list to your local supermarket. There, robots prepare the goods and pack them for home delivery into an autonomous vehicle – or a drone. Meanwhile, your smart watch, connected to a system that senses and analyses real-time health indicators, alerts you to a suggested dinner menu it just created based on your family’s nutritional needs and ingredients available in your pantry. If you signal your approval, it offers to warm the oven before you get home from work and detects your car as you approach turning on the outside lights to welcome you home
