With variousshapes, sizes and inten-sities, there is an LEDsolution available tosolve almost any linearapplication require-ment. All of their sur-face mounted LEDboards go through a critical screeningprocess to assure the best quality lightsource arrives on your project. All LEDproducts are computer screened and thenhand-sorted for uniform color.

The high power brightness of theDLED-6100 series product has a 900lumen per foot output. That can equate toa T-5 HO fluorescent lamp but with amuch longer lamp life. The mediumbrightness of the DLED- 5100 seriesproduct has a 230 lumen output per footfor bright accent lighting. The DLED-5000 series provides 72 lumens per foot. All of these LED light sources are avail-able in multiple color temperatures.

The DLED-9000recessed trimless linearfixtures now comeequipped with an LEDsolution for bright ac-cent lighting of 250 lu-mens per foot. Thisallows the designer tocreate striking visualimages of seamless illu-mination with variouscolor temperatures, allflush with the drywallmounting surface. Whenordered with an overlaplens, this fixture func-tions beautifully as a

vanity light installed between panels ofmirror. The DLED-9000 series fixture isavailable from 18 inches to 12 feet, witha one piece housing and integral dimma-ble Hi-lume driver. Continuous illumina-tion of 40 feet or longer can be created byjoining housings together. In addition tostraight runs, the DLED-9000 series isavailable with 90˚ intersections so thatthe fixtures can run up a wall and acrossa ceiling. This can create designs calleda Vertical “L” or Inverted “U”. Flat planerectangles are also available.

We caught up with SteveNadell, president of CSL®

(Creative Systems Light-ing), to ask about histhoughts on advances insolid-state lighting. CSL, apart of Littman Brands, isheadquartered in City ofIndustry, Calif. Nadell has more than 30years of experience in the lighting manu-facturing industry, and over the past sev-eral years CSL has been aggressivelyexpanding its solid state lighting offerings.

Q: What is CSL’s specialty?

A: CSL® (Creative Systems Lighting)has been designing and manufacturingperformance-engineered architecturallighting fixtures since 1990. We are per-haps best known for being pioneers in thelow voltage small aperture recessed light-ing category, but over the past severalyears we have emerged as a leader in theconcealed LED lighting and architecturalLED lighting categories. Our productscan be found in commercial buildings, hotels, retail establishments and eco-friendly homes all over the world. In fact,

CSL’s 12V Ultra Com-pact PDQ Strip Lightingand Invizilite Generation2 were recently featuredin ELLE DÉCOR’s 2012Miami Showhouse.

Q: What are some ofCSL’s most popular products?

A: All of our products are popular fordifferent reasons, but the architecturaland design communities have really em-braced our LED Eco-Downlight collec-tions. We offer the 2" apertureEco-Downlight LED "Mini", a 3" aper-ture Eco-Downlight LED and we'll bedebuting our 5" aperture Eco-DownlightLED at LIGHTFAIR. Design and build-ing professionals appreciate that theselights are modular, uncomplicated in de-sign and a great value. An example of"modular” is that the Eco-Downlightscome with interchangeable optics and avariety of trim options. Landmark Year For CSL® (Creative Systems Lighting) At LIGHTFAIR® 2012 Cool Lumens, Inc. is now shipping a

uniquely modular LED luminaire designedfor customizable deployment in high-bayapplications with the highest light output inthe industry that can also save 50-90 per-cents in energy and maintenance costs overexisting lighting solutions.

Whether you just want to replace ex-isting 400-watt or 1000-watt metal halidelighting one-for-one, or configure and opti-mize an illumination plan for your specificfacility layout requirements, Cool Lumensluminaires are your first and best choice.

Each fixture (luminaire) can be config-ured with one to nine LED lamp modules ina variety of geometric layouts includinghub-and-spoke. Each lamp module in thefixture can be mounted at several angles, ro-tated to any position, and configured to de-liver one of five different beam spreads inseveral color temperatures including 5000K(daylight) and 4000K (neutral). Each LEDlamp module in the fixture generates up to6,200 lumens of light output, or over 55,000lumens from a 9-lamp fixture. Special elec-trical wiring, network infrastructure wiring, computer servers, or mounting hardware isnot required to install, operate, or control thefixtures.

Each fixture is independently control-lable wirelessly and can be turned on, turned

off, or dimmed to any level from 100 per-cent down to one percent, instantly or grad-ually, and at any time, either individually byfixture or in fixture groups. What’s more, in-tegrated wireless daylight sensors and occu-pancy sensors can be used to maintainconstant illumination at working or shop-ping areas on the floor while turning fixturesoff when no people or equipment are pres-ent in the illuminated area or aisle.

The Cool Lumens light fixtures auto-matically adjust to stable or varying inputline voltages from 100VAC to 300VAC todeliver constant light output even when con-nected to dirty-power grids. Each LED lampmodule in the fixture is passively cooledthrough a patent-pending design that effi-ciently dissipates the heat generated by thehigh-output LED array in each lamp, main-taining the LEDs at optimal operating tem-perature for extended life without any fansor other cooling devices.

SynTec Systems, along with Carlisle’sDryLight™ daylighting system to re-place the building’s existing skylights.

Carlisle’s DryLight skylights aremanufactured utilizing RIM (ReactionInjection Molding) technology, origi-nally introduced to the automotive in-dustry. The RIM technology is used inthe production of DryLight to encapsu-late the glazing into a pigmented, UV-stabilized, polyurethane retainer frame.

This technology eliminates the need fortapes, gaskets and sealants between theframe and dome, and helps reduce thepotential for leaks associated with tradi-tional skylights.

Construction on the facility beganwith a tear-off of the building’s existingroof and installation of a two-inch layerof Carlisle HP-H polyiso insulation.Berger’s crew left a separation betweenthe skylight opening and the polyiso toallow for the installation of wood block-ing, which was used to anchor the Dry-Light skylights onto the rooftop. Next,

Berger’s crew installed Carlisle’s 60-milSure-Seal® EPDM single-ply membraneonto the entire roof surface and cut 4-footby 4-foot holes to prepare for the Dry-Light installation.

Roofers secured the skylight flangeto the wood blocking using galvanizedmetal fasteners. Carlisle’s Pressure-Sen-sitive EPDM curb flashing was cut to fitthe outside of the curb and applied afterbeing primed with Carlisle’s HP-250Primer. VLC benefits from various favorablefactors, including:• Omnipresence of LEDs in displays, signaling and illumination• Significant potential for high-speedmodulation by using LEDs as semicon-ductor components• Data transfer piggybacking on illumi-nation (or signaling) to create broadcast-ing hot-spots• Add-ons without additional infrastruc-tural components

As VLC relies on lighting, it is highlysuited to settings where lights are always

on, such as large offices, production fa-cilities, medical areas or public transportsystems, including airplane cabins. YetVLC can also be used for applications be-yond communication, such as light de-sign for large halls or indoor GPS dataextension.

NEXT Lighting, an LED linear lampcompany based in San Francisco, will belaunching its products at LIGHTFAIR2012. Lighting News caught up withCEO Randall Sosnick as he prepared forthe annual lighting conference.

Q: What does NEXT Lighting do?

A: In short, we make environmentallyfriendly linear lighting products for thecommercial indoor market. We have ini-tially focused on the linear replacementlamp market, which many view as the“holy grail” of LED lighting. With theU.S. ban of the T-12 fluorescent lamp hap-pening on July 14 of this year, we see atremendous near-term opportunity forLED technology to establish a foothold inthis very large market. There are over 500million T-12s still in the U.S. We want tobe a big part of that conversion story.

Q: How did you get started?

A: NEXT Lighting’s co-founder ZachBerkowitz, who comes from the commer-cial real estate world and has been a friend

since college, came to me with a problem. He had been experimenting with some ofthe “me-too” replacement lamps and foundthem technically deficient. Many of themwere failing after just a few months, andsome of them were getting so hot that sol-der was actually melting. So we began toinvestigate if we could come up with a bet-ter design than what everyone else wasdoing. We teamed up with some very smartengineers, and we’ve been refining our de-sign for almost three years now. I mustadmit that when we started, we were verynaïve on just how hard a problem this wasto solve. The fluorescent tube is very effi-cient, and after 80 years of cost-reduction,very inexpensive. On the other hand, no-body ever said, “I love how pale you lookunder this fluorescent light. And can yougive me some more of that flicker?” Andthen there’s the mercury issue.

Q: What is your technical break-through?

A: Our products are very different from theother linear lamp solutions out there. Wehave developed a thermal chimney design

that keeps the LEDs very cool, increasingperformance and longevity. Our design alsouniquely enables us to shape the light distri-bution to suit the specific application. Whenpeople see our product, it is clear to themthat we’ve been “thinking outside the tube.”

Q: What are your company’s greatestchallenges?

A: Where do I start? (Laughs.) First, ourmarket has been tainted by a lot of poorquality products that have been sold withfalse claims. So the consumer has beenrightly trained to be very skeptical. For-tunately, with the right independent test-ing reports, this problem can beovercome, but it will take some time andeffort. Second, as with most LED prod-uct categories, linear replacement lampsales are dependent upon being able todemonstrate to the customer an attractivereturn on their investment. While drop-ping quickly in price, LEDs are still rel-atively expensive, so producing aproduct that performs well at an afford-able price point is an ongoing challengefor all of us in this industry. And finally,as a start-up in a world of industry giants, finding a successful go-to-market strat-egy is a tremendous challenge.

Q: How do you plan to address this distribution challenge?

A: We feel very fortunate to have beenapproached by several industry leadersand are considering our options. If we dopartner with someone, we want to makesure it is an arrangement that takes full ad-vantage of this global opportunity.

Q: Have you begun product shipments, and how much do your lamps cost?

A: We have installed our products in cus-tomer sites under our PilotLight field as-sessment program. We are gatheringimportant feedback, which has been uni-versally positive. As far as cost goes, wehave not yet announced final pricing, butour sales folks would be pleased to dis-cuss specific opportunities.

Q: We have to ask, what’s next forNEXT?

A: Beyond the linear replacement lampmarket, we are currently working on apendant lamp series that will provide ex-cellent light distribution without the needfor a fixture in the ceiling. We also haveother linear formats as well as task light-ing on our product roadmap.

Q: How can our readers find out more?

A: They can stop by our Booth #6539 orvisit us online at www.nextlighting.com.

Vu1 Corporation is setting a new globalstandard for safe, sustainable, energy-ef-ficient lighting. Utilizing a technol-ogy—Electron StimulatedLuminescence™ (ESL) that has its gen-esis in the TV-tube technology of pastgenerations—Vu1’s signature R30 bulbaccomplishes what lighting innovatorshave tried for centuries to do—generatea lighting output that approaches theideal of lighting reflectivity defined byscientist Johann Lambert.

The Vu1 R30 succeeds by creatinga warm, pleasing light that has a fullspectrum of colors and reflects evenlyon the surface below. The R30 generatesa 65-watt equivalency and 500 lux withjust 19.5 watts, is fully dimmable, and

contains no mercury or other harmfulcomponents.

So, what is this ESL technologyand how does it work? Well, as men-tioned earlier, it functions similar toyour old tube televisions—it uses ac-celerated electrons to stimulate phos-phor to create light, making the surfaceof the bulb “glow”. This efficient tech-nology allows the ESL bulb to projectthe same light quality as an incandes-cent but is up to 70 percent more en-ergy efficient, lasting up to five timeslonger than incandescent and contribut-ing to the reduction of greenhouse gasemissions. Perhaps most importantly, there is no use of the neurotoxin Mer-cury (Hg) in the lighting process.

In 2004, a group ofengineers, scientists andexecutives sensed the be-ginning of a cataclysmicshift in the way consumersobtained lighting, and ex-plored various options ofhow to compete in thischanging lighting land-scape.

By combining tech-nologies that had neverbeen used before in light-ing, they created the Electron StimulatedLuminescence model—a highly energyefficient, near perfect light quality, mer-cury-free lighting technology.

After more than a half-decade oftesting and refining, the Vu1 R30 ESL re-ceived UL certification in October 2010.With this certification, Vu1 was able tobegin to put the pieces in place to movetoward full-scale production of the R30bulb—a process that will result in mass-distribution of the bulb in the U.S. during

the summer of 2012.The R30 is just the first

in a variety of bulbs thatVu1 will be able to producewith its ESL technology.Plans are in place to intro-duce the classic A-typelamp for U.S. and Europeanconsumers, the R40 for theU.S. commercial marketand the R25 in Europe.

Vu1’s mission is tohelp consumers and busi-

nesses meet their demands for more envi-ronmentally-friendly lighting choices thatmeet standards now being set through theban of incandescent light bulbs. By intro-ducing the only bulb that can deliver af-fordability, energy-efficiency anddimmability in a non-toxic package, Vu1is the only choice is truly a “light withoutcompromiseTM”.

in research and developing products touse less energy; and escalate our own ar-guments about which technology; SSL,inductance, fluorescent, etc., will outlastall others. No doubt, lighting technologyis advancing at an ever-increasing pace, due, in no small measure, to the compet-itive nature of this business. Is there aclear winner in this race?

In our view, no matter the source ofenergy, or the lighting technology, theconsumer is primarily interested in sav-ing as much energy, and therefore cost,as possible. After all, a watt is a watt, andutility companies charge by the watt. Ohand by the way, the consumer also wants

the product to look good. In a nutshell, the consumer wants options.

At KOJIN, we are committed to thefundamental principle of “keeping itsimple”. In early 2005, we looked at thesimple fluorescent tube—the mostwidely used lighting technology outsideof residential applications. The tube ra-diates light 360° around the tube. Theobvious first response was a mostly non-technical one— apply a reflector aroundthe tube to re-direct the “wasted” lightdown to the task level. Using Nano tech-nology, we manufactured tube reflectors, with curvatures engineered to maximizelight reflection for each fluorescent lampsize. The patented Nano reflector in-creases the footcandle by 65 percent! Ifyou are mathematically inclined, you’d

figure out that you can de-lamp one outof every two T8 lamps, and get the sameor better lighting. That is 50 percent en-ergy savings.

Next we set course on converting theless efficient T12 and T8 lights to themore efficient T5 lamps. To address theconcern that the sheer slimness of the T5lamp renders it incompatible with theT12/T8 tombstones, we commissionedG13 adaptors to fit over the smaller G5socket on T5 tubes. The bigger obstaclewas resolving the retrofit process withoutadding significant labor. The solution wasto manufacture a T5 self-ballasted kit;consisting of a lamp holder, which alsoacts to contain the T5 ballast, the G13adaptors and the T5 lamp. The result isan average of 30 percent energy savings.

KOJIN(continued from page 1)

Thereafter, our developmentopened up a wide spectrum of productofferings, centering around the T5 tech-nology; such as troffers, shop lights, strip lights, etc. Not discounting theLED advances, we now also have a di-vision focused on bringing the samecost-effective production to LED prod-ucts—recognizing that each productclass has pros and cons.

Seven years on, what we know forsure is that energy savings is a collectiveresponsibility, and no technology has amonopoly on this global mission. Theclear winner? The consumer, of course!

and founder of Seoul Semiconductor, demonstrated the complexity of LEDdesigns by comparing Acrich2 LEDs toDC LED lamps manufactured by fiveother companies. During a visualdemonstration, CEO Lee held up thecomponents of the LED lamps and re-ferred to the parts as “junk.” NorthAmerican Vice-President, Brian Wilcox(formerly with Philips Lumileds), refersto the AC-LED technology as “LED-Light.” “It’s unbelievable technology—where else can you find a product thatprotects the environment, provides re-markable design freedom, and mini-mizes the number of parts allowing for

a sleeker, slimmer design. It should becalled ‘LED-Light’—because it has allof the benefits of an incredible LEDwithout any side effects,” Wilcox said.

Seoul Semiconductor commercial-ized the first ever “AC-LED” in theworld back in 2005. Shortly thereafter,a new product line branded ‘Acriche’was launched for the general lightingmarket. The company has continued toinvest heavily in AC-driven LED tech-nology and is now focused on theAcrich2 family of modules that are help-ing lighting companies eliminate theAC/DC drivers and reduce space signif-icantly in bulb and fixture designs. Alarge variety of voltage and powerranges are available to meet a wide va-riety of needs.

Three years ago, Seoul Semicon-ductor was unheard of in North Amer-ica. Now, under Wilcox’s leadership, there is a distinct buzz around SeoulN.A. In just a few years, Wilcox re-structured and reorganized the salesteam, which has since doubled in size.He has also added marketing, distribu-tion, and technical support divisions, aswell as two North American labs whereSeoul N.A. can perform its own testingand analysis.

Seoul N.A. has also increased itspresence at major trade shows and light-ing demonstrations around North Amer-ica, including LIGHTFAIR 2012, whereteam members will be demonstrating theAcrich2 family of products, along withseveral other Seoul product families.

Q: Do you have anything special instore for this year’s LIGHTFAIR?

A: This is a landmark year for CSL atLIGHTFAIR. We have aggressively ex-panded our LED collections to become avital player in the solid-state lightingspace. In many ways, our 2012 LIGHT-FAIR presence marks our re-debut in thiscategory. We have a dynamic offering ofLED lighting solutions that meet a vari-ety of technical needs, from LED Eco-Downlights and Linear LED Lighting toLED Steplights and LED Architectural

Lighting. All of our new LED collectionsare examples of how CSL continuouslyevolves as a brand. The newly expandedEco-Downlight collection is a great ex-ample of our innovation, simplicity, de-sign and function. We are proud to debutthe second generations of our LED"Mini" and 3" aperture Eco-Downlightthis year, which offer more power andhigher energy-efficiency than their pred-ecessors. The new 5" aperture Eco-Downlight also reflects our ability tocreate downlighting solutions for alltypes of buildings, both large and small. The variety and quality of our LED offer-ings just get better and better each year.I’m really excited and encourage every-body to stop by Booth #2123.

Q: How is energy efficient lighting leg-islation affecting your business?

A: It’s affecting CSL in a positive way.

The U.S., Europe, China and other majorinternational powers view energy effi-cient lighting innovation as a necessity.CSL is on the cutting-edge of creatingsolid-state lighting products to meet thatincreased demand. In fact, a recent reportfound that the solid-state lighting marketwill amount to almost $91 billion by2020, or close to 60 percent of the overalllighting market.

Q: What types of solid-state lightingadvancements do you envision for thefuture?

A: The market is looking for increasedperformance on every level. We are be-ginning to see LEDs with higher junctionpoint temperatures. These LEDs can getup to 150 degrees Celsius, which is ex-tremely hot. For architects and designers,a higher temperature means they will beable to increase the light impact, ulti-

mately decreasing the amount of LEDsneeded to light a space. Three years agowhen we began using LEDs, we were get-ting 25-30 lumens per watt. With the ad-vancement of junction temperature, weare now seeing up to 100 lumens per watt.

Advancements in color consistency willcontinue, as will dimmable solutions. AtCSL, we are value engineering all of ourcurrent LED Eco-Downlights, in order toreduce market costs while keeping the samelight output. We've also been working dili-gently to create a better selection of deco-rative, high performance LED fixtures.Needless to say, there’s plenty of work todo and the future looks bright for CSL.
