HOW TO LIGHT A DANCE

When lighting a dance gig the designer must take into consideration the key points to creating atmosphere, sufficiently lighting the performers and the ability to create a good show using specials and colour semiotics. I will be comparing this to a music gig. Lighting I would use.

. 1k Fresnel Backlight- adds depth and brings the performer off the curtain

. Source 4 profile Side lighting- booms used to take away shadow off the performers. Cct Fresnels General wash- performance space is lit. Minuette fresnel with Gels- create atmosphere and portray emotions of the performance. Music Gig. 1K Fresnel Backlight. Source 4 profiles- highlight each member of the band. Cct Fresnels General wash . Moving heads- help to create a good atmosphere

COLOUR SEMIOTICS FOR A DANCE AND MUSIC

PERFORMANCE

Colour semiotics is a huge factor in creating the best atmosphere for a performance. For a meaningful but abstract piece like desh uses projection and bright whites to create a naturalistic feel to the performance, whereas Billy Elliot would be similar you would use pinks and reds to create the ballet theme. However, in a music performance we would use quite strong colours for a heavy rock band such as metallica. Deep reds and blues would create a rock theme and represent a satanic atmosphere. Although, for a performance by a girl band you would use lighter colours like yellows and whites alongside reds and blues as the target audience is different.
