Principals Message Last week I was reminded of the story of Hagar in the book of Genesis. God had promised Abraham that He would give him a son and that from him would come many descendants. Years pass and Abrahams wife Sarahs biological clock was ticking on, and on, and on. In fact, such was Sarahs age that she decided to give God a hand in fulfilling His promise by telling Abraham to sleep with her servant Hagar, so that she might be able to provide the son that she seemingly couldnt. As we follow the story we learn that Hagar does fall pregnant and gives birth to a son named Ishmael. However, during the pregnancy, the relationship between and Hagar and Sarah turns sour (easy to imagine why) and Hagar ends up fleeing into the desert. Later, God delivers on His promise and Sarah does eventually fall pregnant and gives birth to a son they call Isaac. So what of Hagar? There she is in the desert, with a bleak future to say the least awaiting her. But in Genesis 16:7-12 we read that God does a few things. Firstly He sees her, He hears her, and He comes to her and cares for her, providing direction for her moving forward. In this story we hear something of the nature of God, because he has continued to act this way through the history of mankind. We all have a deep sense of wanting to belong to something, and I have watched many people over many years (including myself) act in a multitude of ways in order to feel we belong. In a world where we are more connected than ever, we seem to have a growing epidemic of loneliness, and sadly I see more and more of this amongst school students. This story reveals something of Gods nature that provides wonderful hope to all of us. Irrespective of the circumstances you currently find yourself in, God still sees you, He hears you, He cares for you, and He will come to you and walk beside you if you invite him to. There are many things we can belong to, things like sporting clubs, social groups, Facebook groups and the like, but full contentment is only found when we respond to the invitation of the One who sees us, hears us and cares deeply for us. I suspect at some stage we have all felt like Hagar when she was out in the desert and have cried out to be seen and heard and cared for. If you find yourself in this place at the moment and want to know more about the God who sees, hears and cares for you, then I encourage you to talk with someone about this. If youre unsure who to speak to, then consider one of the staff at WCCS. Each one personally knows this God, and many of us have also had desert experiences and understand how challenging they can be. Principal’s Message Last week I was reminded of the story of Hagar in the book of Genesis. God had promised Abraham that He would give him a son and that from him would come many descendants. Years pass and Abraham’s wife Sarah’s biological clock was ticking on, and on, and on. In fact, such was Sarah’s age that she decided to give God a hand in fulfilling His promise by telling Abraham to sleep with her servant Hagar, so that she might be able to provide the son that she seemingly couldn’t.

This story reveals something of God’s nature that provides wonderful hope to all of us.

SHINE EVENING On Thursday 12th September we w ill be celebrating the talents and gifts of our students at SHINE Evening. This is a wonderful opportunity for family and friends to come and watch the children from Kindergarten to Year 12, as they showcase creative performances they have been working on. Keep this date free in your calendar, and stay tuned for updates as we get closer to the date. FATHER’S DAY STALL Our Junior School Father’s Day Stall will be held on Friday 30th August. Students will have the opportunity to purchase a gift for their Father, Step-Father, Uncle or Grandfather. Gifts range from $2-$6 (correct change is preferred). As our school numbers have increased over the years, please be aware that unfortunately we cannot allow IOUs for students who forget to bring their money on the day. If you are able to assist on the stall, please contact Amber Robson in the office ([email protected]). Volunteers would be required from 9:45-11:30am. Thank you. OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD We are once again collecting shoeboxes filled with fun, practical and helpful gifts for children throughout the world! If you and your family would like to participate, the boxes can be collected from the school office, and need to be returned in October. It is exciting to be able to bless children each year by having the shoeboxes we pack as a school delivered all over the world. But this is only the beginning. Samaritan’s Purse is also involved in programs throughout the year including a follow-up discipleship program called The Greatest Journey, a 12 lesson series that churches use to teach Bible stories, memorise scripture, and help children become soul-winners in their communities. Since the program began ten years ago nearly nine million boys and girls in 124 countries have made decisions for Christ through the Greatest Journey. Information about what to put in a shoebox and the journey of a shoebox can be found on pages 12 to 14 of this Newsletter

Greetings Friends of Junior School, This week is all about Literacy Day and our super hero theme. Mrs Hutchings always goes above and beyond during Literacy Week, and one of the highlights is the hatching of baby chicks in the incubator. What a beautiful reminder that there is new, and abundant, life awaiting us after every winter season. Just a reminder for our new families; please avoid horror, gore and witchcraft themed costumes. This is mainly because we don’t want the Kindergarten students being scared. There is always a bit of contention and oppositional defiance around Harry Potter. For me it is pretty simple, Harry Potter is a soft sell into the occult and the movies show a definite progression towards horror. For those families that are not worried about this please just be sensitive to the families that are really sensitive about this. It is all about being part of a supportive community. If the kids have Harry Potter or witchcraft costumes then they could wear them on a different non-school occasion. John 13:35 puts it pretty succinctly; “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one-another.” With that being said, let’s have a wonderful celebration of Book Week. Our educational and spiritual focus has always been; our kids need to be able to read well so that they will be able to access the life-giving, living water of the Bible. SITE FENCE OUT OF BOUNDS If you have been on the school grounds recently you will have noticed that we have a site road dissecting our Junior School playground. We can still have the Year 5 and 6 students on the northern oval, but the site road is problematic. Some of the kids have accidently and intentionally kicked their soccer balls onto the access road and taken it upon themselves to go under the site fence to fetch the ball. This hasn’t been such a danger for the past few weeks, however, the pile drivers and concrete trucks will be in this week. This poses a real danger if students do not follow the rules. Just a heads-up that there may be some detentions issued to repeat offenders. We will give them verbal instructions and continual class room warnings, unfortunately this may just motivate some of our risk takers. NED YO-YOs This week marks the end of the NED yo-yo craze. The students have raised over $2000 to go towards another school being able to access the NED Mindset show. At least the promotion is promoting positive thinking instead of the Coca-Cola and Fanta yo-yo crazes of the 70s and 80s. Congratulations to our Year 6 events crew, who have worked diligently for the past two weeks. We will continue to have a NED yo-yo area on the B-block veranda, at lunchtime only, until the craze dies down completely. A technical tip, some kids take the yo-yo apart to replace strings, there is a real danger of losing the ball bearing cases when the yo-yo is disassembled, it is far safer to unwind the base of the new string and loop it around the centre pin a couple of times. We are already mid-term and school life is in no way slowing down. Our girls have arrived back from the Red Centre Road Trip full of stories, memories and for some girls, salvation! What an amazing experience, huge thanks goes out the Ms O’Gara, Ms Dempster and Mr Chown for your ongoing commitment in sowing into the lives of our students. God certainly uses this opportunity to speak to their hearts and draw them closer to him. We are encouraged and praise God for his love for all of us. Please continue to pray for the boys who return at the end of the week.

SPEAK LIFE PROJECT The second poster for the speak life project is “when you choose the behaviour you choose the consequences”. We want to explore this statement in the life of our school. Not just in regards to our day-to-day choices and the consequences they bring, but also the choices around eternity and the consequences they also bring. Please pray that God will open hearts and minds to this message and please excuse the American spelling of behaviour. This project is spearheaded by American Christian musician Toby Mac and so his posters are spelt accordingly. It will be interesting to see how many students pick up the error. UNIFORM Our next spot check will be shoes and socks. We have a number of students who prefer to wear black instead of white socks and some students have worn canvas shoes, which are not compliant with safety standards in a number of subjects. They can not participate if they are not wearing leather uppers, so the sooner this issue is fixed the less disruption to their learning. Thanks again for your ongoing support, your partnership is crucial in the success of promoting the Christian school culture we want to see flourish. POLICE VISIT This Tuesday 27th August our senior students w ill be visited by a Police Liaison officer who w ill educate them in the legalities surrounding social media. They will also inform them of the legal process transition for those turning 18, and the real implications it will have should they find themselves on the wrong side of the law. Often students focus on what they can legally do once they become adults, but fail to recognise the increased responsibility and expectations. It should be a valuable information session for all.

ZONE ATHLETICS AGE CHAMPIONS Two weeks ago we mentioned the great achievements of the WCCS students at our THACCCSA Zone Athletics Carnival. BASKETBALL GALA DAY On Tuesday 30th July, WCCS sent six basketball teams to the boys and girls THACCCSA Basketball Gala Day. The girls gala day was at Maitland Federation Centre. Our girls teams arrived in anticipation for the day’s games. Throughout the whole day our teams displayed grit and determination to work together to perform at their best. Our teams all developed their skills and learned much about the game of basketball through having the experience of playing in a highly competitive competition. Our Junior A team played really well finishing 3rd in their pool. Our Opens A team also played very well, which included an exciting come from behind victory to secure a semi-final spot. It was a closely contested semi-final but unfortunately we fell behind finishing 3rd overall. The boys gala day at Broadmeadow Basketball Stadium was also a great day of competition. Our two boys teams played extremely well winning a few pool games. The Opens boys won their minor playoff game to finish 5th overall on what was a highly competitive tournament. It was great to see the boys persevere and work together to achieve well. The junior boys team played exceptionally well making it to the semi-final. It was yet again a very competitive game with many skilled players. Our boys did well to work as a team but were beaten by a very talented side. Overall, the Basketball Gala Day was an enjoyable day, where our teams participated in the right spirit of the game. Students were able to use their skills to help others in their development and gave God the glory whether winning or losing. ZONE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL On Friday 9th August, WCCS sent a team of athletes to the Secondary Zone Athletics Carnival at Hunter Sports Centre. Students arrived with great anticipation of what is always a great day of competition. It was a warm, yet windy day which made it tricky for some events. Nevertheless, the students participated to the best of their ability. The day saw many students achieving well in both individual and team events. There were many personal best runs, jumps and throws on the day. It was fantastic to see the students encourage each other, and also cheer on and assist other schools in their performances. Many of our students also assisted staff running events which made the day run smoothly, and it was excellent to see them serve in this manner. A special mention to those students who performed so well on the day that they achieved age champion for the Zone Athletics Carnival. These students are Jake K (12yrs), Riley S (14yrs), Lachlan R (16yrs) and Nathanial C (17yrs). A wonderful achievement for these students. WCCS finished 2nd overall at the conclusion of the carnival. A great effort and achievement from our students. 29 of our students represented THACCCSA at the CSSA State athletics carnival on Friday 23rd August at Homebush.
