The conventional GLS incandescent lamp gives off light

in all direction. Note that most LED lamps that replaces

GLS lamp gives more light in the downward direction

and little light in the upward direction.

• The most energy efficient light is natural light.

• For residential homes, you can best harvest natural light with

well-designed north-facing windows, skylights and light tubes

to let in light, without adding to summer heat and winter cold.

• Use light coloured interior surfaces, especially south-facing

rooms and hall ways helps to reflect more light and reduce the

level of lighting required.

• Fluorescent lighting does not require a large amount of energy

to start. So it is ok to switch off fluorescent lighting when the

light is not needed. Switching them on again (when you need

the light) will not require more energy.

• Low voltage does not mean energy efficient

• Low voltage halogen reflector lamps (used in most downlights

in the home) are often inappropriately used for lighting large

spaces. This is considered poor lighting practice and inefficient

use of energy. Examples have been found where a room that

would have traditionally been lit with one or two incandescent

lamps (GLS) or compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) are now lit with

12 or more halogen downlights.

• Good lighting design is often the most overlooked aspect of

lighting efficiency.

• Thoughtful lighting design that will improve lighting quality and

energy efficiency, rather than adherence to out-dated (yet

easy) lighting practice.

• Indiscriminate use of low voltage halogen downlights in a home

is highly energy inefficient and often uncomfortable.

• Furthermore, downlights require multiple holes in the ceiling

and the insulation above it, thus reducing ceiling insulation

performance resulting in higher energy cost.

• Good lighting design incorporate good selection and

compatibility of lamp choices and light fittings – be it for task,

accent, ambient or general lighting, creating comfort and

efficient use of energy.

The benefits of energy efficient lighting to consumers are essentially; Lower running cost, Reduce environmental impact & Improved light quality.

THE BASICS OF ENERGy EFFICIENT LIGHTING

Is is a well-known fact that the colour of natural light varies with passing of the hours in a day. These differences are measured and classified in the table to the right.

OUtline OF a lighting design prOcess

A lighting consultant will be able to walk you through the following steps.

1. Identify the requirements – gaining a full understanding of

what one wants to achieve, including the following;

• Task requirements – the illuminance and glare

• Mood of the space

• Relation to shape of space

• Things to be emphasised

• Things to hide

• Direction of lighting

• Interaction of daylight

2. Determine the method of lighting

• Determine how the light is to be delivered, e.g. will it be

recessed, surface mounted, direct or indirect or will up-

lighting be used.

3. Select the lighting equipment (luminaire or light fitting)

• Light source selection

• Selection of the most appropriate light source – light output,

input wattage, efficacy, lifetime, surface brightness / glare,

colour characteristics, electrical characteristics, requirement

for control gear, and compatibility with existing

electrical system.

• Select the type of light fitting or product

Lighting design must take a holistic approach that not only provides illumination (decorative and functional lighting) but creates a comfortable, stimulating and interesting environment, especially for a residential home. An efficient and effective lighting design system will;

THE BASICS OFLIGHTING DESIGN

• For residential homes – the aesthetics expectations - look at the

decorative, beauty or artistic features (what is special or unique

in the product) in relation to the light it will deliver.

• Other factors in light fitting selection are – luminaire (or light

fitting) efficiency, light distribution, glare control, finish and

appearance, size, accessibility of components for maintenance

• Ability to handle adverse operating conditions (power surge,

voltage spikes, etc.)

• Thermal management – especially so for LED (light emitting

diode) fittings.

4. Calculating the lighting parameters and adjust the design

as required.

• This step is carried out by trained lighting designers using

specialised software to calculate the lighting parameters and

often to visualise how the space and perspective will be like.

5. Check that the fittings to be installed are those that the lighting

design is based on.

6. Inspect the installation upon completion and determine

user satisfaction.

For many home owners, there is often the tendency of rushing

straight into luminaire (light fitting or product) selection before

determining more broadly what is required. The outcome may then

be less than adequate, giving sub-optimal lighting conditions and

low user satisfaction. Finding a proper lighting design service from

the beginning will ensure the best overall lighting solution and lower

total cost of ownership during its lifetime.
