More than 1 000 years ago the early Polynesians were an adventurouspeople who were excellent sailors They navigated using the sun andthe stars Sometimes whole villages sailed in their longboats to live ondeserted islands This is the story of Takai and his village

Takai was waiting on the beachfor his father Arama to returnfrom fishing When he saw hisfathers wooden canoe he ran intothe water Almost immediately herealized his father wasnt happyWhats wrong Takai asked Therare no fish Theres nothing to takeback to the village Theres nothingfor us to eat Arama replied

Takai was twelve and knew his father needed helpI can go with you to look for fish Please Father I canhelp His father knew the dangers but he could not go

back to the village without food All right but you have todo exactly what I tell you Takai was very proud that hisfather let him help He jumped into the canoe and tookan oar He and his father rowed the canoe away from theland until it disappeared After a long time Arama put down hisoar and looked up at the sky Takai could see that his fatherwas worried Theres a storm coming We should go back

But it was too late Dark clouds covered the sun and the wind started toblow They tried to row the canoe back to land but the waves were toobig The canoe started moving up and down violently Suddenly a wave brokeover the canoe and Takai hit his head on the side He lost consciousnessWhen he woke up Takai saw his father sitting beside him He wasnt rowingHe was just looking at the sea What happened Takai asked You hit yourhead in the storm And we lost the oars Arama said Now we have to go wherethe currents take us he explained as he looked at the horizonThen Takai sawsomething high in the sky Whats that Father he asked Its a seagull Aramashouted excitedly It means that were close to land
