DIVINE GUIDANCE

Pearls of Prophet: Hadith

Evil has become widespread on the land and at the sea because of  men's deeds; this in order that He May cause them to have a tasteof some of their deeds; perhaps they will turn back (from evil).

(Quran 30: 41)

“Man's own doings” means the wickedness andoppression and tyranny which inevitably appear in

human conduct and character as a result of adopting

shirk and atheism and ignoring the Hereafter. “May be

they mend their ways” means that Allah shows the evil

consequences of some of the acts of men in this world

before the punishment of the hereafter so that they

understand the reality, feel the error of their

“whenever a Muslim plants or grows a sapling

or a plant, and a human being , a beast or anything

else feeds upon it, it is counted for him as an act of

benevolence”. (Sahih Al-Bukhari, 8:41)

Our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon hiwas the pioneer of environmentalism. In oth

ahadeeth (plural of hadith) also we find ma

references wherein our Prophet encouraged planting

tree, make proper use of water and other natur

resources, and asked Sahaba not to hurt animals. T

make life peaceful at this planet we need to follow

the steps of our prophet.

Did you know, every Minute at least 51 acres of

tropical forests are destroyed, we consume almost

35,000 barrels of oil, we add 12,000 tons of Co2 to

the atmosphere. There are many more shocking

statistical reports on environment published everynow and then. When I read them, I wonder where

we are heading towards. The world we are living in

is becoming a dreadful place with natural

resources being depleted at frightening rate.

Man's endless greed for having everything

through any possible means has led to such a

situation – Thanks to Materialism that gifted us

theories such as “Survival of the

Fittest”.

Undoubtedly, Environmental degradation is

today considered to be the greatest threat to the

very existence of Human life.High Level Threat

Panel of the United Nations identified it as one of

the Ten Key Threats to the future of mankind.

Despite the fact that there are hundreds of

environmentalists working for this cause, the issue

still remains afresh because what they are lookingout for are temporary solutions and not a complete

solution. We can't solve this issue with just a list

of a few Do's and Don'ts. Instead, we require a

complete code of conduct that provides an ethical

view of the conservation of Nature. Islam

presents such a complete code of conduct.

Islam, as understood by many is not just yet

another religion. It presents a Holistic concept o

Deen. Deen is an Arabic word which means

System of Life that guides mankind in all sphere

of life. Islam observes a sound connection betwee

Human life and the Natural order, thus, providingstrong foundation for the Islamic Environment

practice.

Islamic Environmental practice is based on fou

principles,

· Tauheed (Oneness of God)

· Khilafah (Human Responsibility)

· Akhirah (Answerability)

· Mizaan (Balance of Universe)

Tauheed:

It is the most fundamental concept o

Islam, which holds God as One. It asserts

Muslim's belief that it is God who created th

whole universe and is the Cherisher of it. Th

whole of the wonderful universe belongs to Hi

and He is the only Owner.“What is in the heaven

and the earth belong toAllah. Allah encompasse

everything” (Quran 4:125). This belief makes Muslim's perspective of the Nature differen

from others. He realizes that his actions need t

be according to God's will.

Moreover, environmental problems can't b

addressed by mere Technology. Only throug

acceptance of a Supreme Owner of the univers

can a Human draw limits to his own wishes.

Khlafah:i This belief assigns a status to the man that

God created everything for him and appointed him

the vice-regent. “it is He Who appointed you

Khalifson this earth” (Quran 6:167).This makes it

clear that man, being the vice-regent is not theOwner of the universe and that he can't follow his

own desires in any aspect of life, including the

utilization of Natural resources. His role is that of

a Trustee (Amanah). He is supposed to act as per

the Guidance of the Owner of universe, the God.

Exploitation of the earth indicates man's failure

to fulfill his obligations as trustee. Such a

perspective will generate a positive attitude

towards the environment.Akhirah:

Why would a man think of ethics and morals

while utilizing the natural resources? Why would

he even think of safeguarding environment, on the

first place? It is only the concept of Answerability

that motivates him to follow the ethics and

refrains from doing all wrong-doings that can

cause harm to the environment. Islam inculcates in

every human being, the very concept of

Answerability that every deed would bequestioned about.

Mizaan:

Ponder this, if the Sun, Moon and star

didn't follow a particular schedule, what tha

would lead to? How do they work with so muc

perfection? God created a perfect balance in th

universe “The All-Merciful taught the Qur'an, Hcreated man and taught him clear expression. Th

sun and moon both run with precision. The star

and the trees all bow down in prostration. H

erected heaven and established the balance

(Quran 55:1-5). Whatever is in the universe is

perfect balance and we, as the Trustees mus

ensure that this Balance remains undisturbed.

This Islamic concept of Environment is exhibite

with great perfection in the Life of Prophe

Muhammad(S). His teachings and actions la

foundation of a society that stood out to be th

best; a society that motivated man to give up th

short-range profits and think of the ethic

perspective.

Verily! In the creation of the heavens and the earth signifies

all the creation that extends from greatest heights of the heavens to

the depth of the earth and all that is in between them.

In the alternation of night and day is an important sign in which Allah describes the accurate functioning o

the universe. It is not mere alternation but also Allah made the night as a covering (through its darknes

[s78.v10], so that man can have rest and Allah made the day for seeking livelihood [s78.v11].

Allah has mentioned some more miraculous signs in the following verse: “Indeed, in the creation of th

heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day, and the ships which sail in the sea wit

that which benefits people, and what Allah has sent down from the sky of rain, giving life thereby to thearth after its death, and dispersing therein of all kinds of moving creatures and directing the winds an

the clouds controlled between the sky and the earth, surely are signs for people who use their intellect

[AL-QURAN 2; 164]

It is not possible that everyone may have a book revealing the truth every moment. Neither an orator

available the whole time to present nor can all browse the internet anytime. However, these (man-mad

are not the only resources available to man to know the truth. Allah has provided us with a source which

available all the time and everywhere. It is the natural environment of human beings, in which are scattere

innumerable signs for guidance. These signs are mentioned beautifully in the above mentioned verses.

These are signs only for the 'Ulul-albaab' (men of understanding) and 'Leqowmin yaqilun' (people who us

their intellect), as mentioned in the two verses. 'Ulul-albaabi' comes from the singular noun 'lub-bun' whicis a sound mind free from distractions, a mind that is free from clutter so it can think about higher an

bigger things. 'Leqowmin yaqilun', the one that tries to apply its intellect. 'Aqal'–intellect, it also mean

when you can put your emotions in check, when your mind is not filled with filth and you can think about re

stuff.

The men of understanding don't just see the signs but also think deeply in them [s3.v191]. The Last o

Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (peace & blessings be upon him) said: “Woe unto them who recite this vers

([s3.v190]) and then don't think deeply over it.” [IbnHibban] It is very important that men with soun

minds, minds without filth ponder upon the universe and present their understanding to the world, o

corrupt people with filthy minds will misguide humanity with their baseless arguments like 'humans weapes' or 'the universe is just a happening' and so on.

When the men of understanding and the people who use their intellect see these signs, they do not mere

make scientific discoveries and inventions, but they recognize the Creator of the universe, which is th

ultimate requirement. These people because of their understanding and intellect get the motivation t

remember Allah in all postures [s3.v191] and their love for Allah becomes stronger [s2.v165] and they ge

to know that Allah has not created (all) this without purpose[s3.v191].

PONDER OVER THE CREATION

“Intelligence plus character-that is the goal of true education.” ― Martin Luther King Jr.

In the world of today, we are confronted with huge challenges. On one hand we see the developin

nations who are struggling with the rapid material advancement and on the other hand we see th

developed nations of the West who are struggling with increasing incidences of crime and psychologicdisturbances. Education is seen as one of the important tools for the development of a society and a ke

to addressing the challenges world face today.

We need to understand what really education stands for and why are we yet to see real fruits o

education in the society. Education, as we understand, is not only responsible for endowing a stude

with scientific knowledge and skills relating to material objects and processes so that it helps him wit

his material pursuits but also teaches a student to be morally and ethically vigilant, righteous an

sensitive to the happenings and needs of the society.

Ironically, the focus of education itself, the students and the educationists have shifted almo

entirely towards the first part which is preparing the students for the material well-being. The result

of this approach are extremely disastrous. We are slowly moving towards a society which is void o

character and virtue because the education is just measured on the scale of material benefits. Th

educational institutes which are considered as the temples of knowledge have turned into factories an

markets and the students of knowledge have merely become selfish customers. Thus, we see educatio

whose first and foremost aim was to confer humility, is now a source of pride and ingratitude. It is now

scholarship without wisdom and music without melody. It is incapable of understanding the sacrednes

and value of human life. When these students becomes politicians, administrators and policy makers o

tomorrow, the condition will be the same as we are in today. We see corrupt politicians, bureaucrats an

ministers. We see journalists and judiciary which is not honest. We see doctors who worry more abo

filling their pockets than saving a person's life. We see the law-enforcers who indulge more in breakinthe laws than the actual 'criminals'.

The task on our hand is to realise the second part which education needs to offer. We need t

understand the education which we are striving for, is meaningless if it is making us forget ou

character and virtues. It cannot be called 'education' if it is making us ignorant and insensitive toward

the sanctity of human life, values, and the issues which society is facing. We need to discard the clou

of ego under which we are wrapped and understand that the education brings a responsibility for u

towards the fellow human beings who are poverty-stricken and suffering from fear and anxiety due t

various factors.

Thus, whatever we have learnt should be made relevant and useful to society. The gap between learninand practice should be bridged. Knowledge from books and laboratories should be made relevant an

useful to society. At the same time, it is important that we look beyond money, comfort and ment

slavery. It is need of the hour that we not only opt for courses which give us material benefits lik

medicine, engineering and management but also look beyond this. Students from amongst us should als

pick up courses which help them engage directly with society like humanities, journalism and law. Ther

is a serious crisis of honest public representatives, law-makers, journalists and administrators and no

the responsibility rest on our shoulders, the students of today, to fill this void in the coming days.

It should not be surprising for you to know that Islam, Environment and Ecology have a greconnection.Islam says that Humans, the best of living creatures, is in fact the guardians, trustees the caretakers of ALLAH's(SWT) creation. It is thus our responsibility to strive for harmony in orelations with the natural world. If we don't, we will be one day held in judgement by ALLAH(SWT) f

not fulfilling that responsibility, for not being good trustees of creation.

Our holy prophet(Peace Be Upon Him) once said: "Whosoever plants a tree and diligently looks afteruntil it matures and bears fruit is rewarded", and "if a Muslim plants a tree or sows a field and men abeats and birds eat from it, all of it is a charity on his part", and again, "The world is green and beautifand ALLAH has appointed you as His caretakers over it".

Islamic belief includes that nature actively praises Almighty ALLAH in its continuous existenand movement. The Holy Qu'ran does state in certain cases that the environment is here to ser

man.It must also be remembered that ALLAH in His wisdom created these creatures for reasons oththan serving man.Islamic ecological ethics are derived from the belief that all of creation belongs Almighty ALLAH, and not to man, and to believe that animals and plants exist to benefit man leads environmental destruction and misuse.

Our Holy prophet(PBUH) was once asked whether there would be a reward for those who shcharity to nature and animals. He(PBUH) replied, "for charity shown to each creature with a kind heathere is a reward.”

So this makes it very clear for us that protecting and conserving environment is necessary for of us which not only helps us in the world but is also going to reward in world hereafte

An ecosystem consists of living organisms(plants, animals and microbes) with the non-living componenof their environment(air, water, land) interacting as a system.Now it is our duty as the trustees of ALLAH's creation to help maintain the ecological balance which wr e su l t i n b e t te r su r r o un d i n gs fo r u s an d the r e st o f human i t y t o su r v i v
