We are so excited to welcome our students, parents, and teachers to Waterford Valley High for a new school year. We would like to offer a special welcome to our Grade 10 students and parents and look forward to working with you. It’s hard to believe we are in our FIFTH year at Waterford Valley! Please encourage your son/daughter to become involved in their school. We offer a wide range of co-curricular activities including many athletic teams, music, drama, art, debating and social awareness groups. It is often these events of high school that make the most lasting impressions in our minds. We want and expect the very best from our students and hope that each and every one of you have a successful and enjoyable year. Vaping Awareness To increase awareness about the harms and risks associated with the use of vaping products among youth, the NL Alliance for the Control of Tobacco (ACT) has been granted permission by the School District to coordinate a presentation on vaping and e-cigarettes. All students at WVH were given a presentation on October 18. Because the prevalence of vaping is a serious concern in schools, we encourage parent and guardians to continue the conversation about vaping with your son or daughter. As you consider this, you may want to check out:

WVH Kids Eat Smart Breakfast Program We’ve all heard the saying, Breakfast is the most important meal of the day”, well there is no

myth to this saying… it’s true. When you awake in the morning after a good night’s sleep your

body has been without food for hours. WVH Kids Eat Smart Breakfast Program Waterford

Valley High’s Breakfast Program, in conjunction with the Kids Eat Smart Organization and its

wonderful volunteer teachers and kind students operate from 8:30am - 8:50 am, five days a

week, to supply a free, grab and go breakfast. The program is open to everyone at WVH and

offers white milk, fresh baked muffins, fresh fruit, yogurt, cheese sticks, granola and nutrigrain

bars, applesauce and 100% fruit juice boxes. Soon, we are going to start making scrambled eggs

and toast. This breakfast program works on the premise that students need nutritious food to

provide the energy they need to concentrate and learn. A productive day starts with a healthy

breakfast! Our Breakfast Program will gladly accept monetary and food donations to help fill

our KES cupboards. If you would like to donate, then you can drop off a breakfast item (100%

juice and peanut free please!) or a monetary donation to the school anytime throughout the

year. You can also make your donation online at www.kidseatsmart.ca and designate our school

to receive your gift. It is essential that to fill our KES cupboards to help our students start the

day energized, alert and well nourished. We currently serve more than 500 breakfasts each

week.

Sexual Consent Resources The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District recognizes the need to help our students become more informed on the important concept of sexual consent. All students need to be provided with the tools and information necessary to become ethical decision makers, aware and respectful of every individual’s personal boundaries. Consent is an important concept for all young people, positively impacting relationships with peers, family, friends, and potential romantic partners. These age-appropriate resources on consent are to be used to supplement existing curriculum in areas where relationships, healthy relationships, and consent are part of the discussion. These supplemental resources are another tool for our educators, as part of the sustained, comprehensive approach of our schools to help convey the ideas of respect, compassion, empathy, and acceptance. These are important and integral ideas in today’s society and vital concepts for us all.

More Halloween Fun!
