TABLE OF LIFE SAVING SIGNALS REQUIRED
BY V/29 OF SOLAS
LIFE SAVING SIGNALS
The signals illustrated in thisleaflet are those to be used byany ship or person in distresswhen communicating with searchand rescue units. They have beenagreed internationally for this
purpose and it is important thatyou are familiar with them toensure they are correctly usedin distress situations.
The International Convention forthe Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS)in Regulation 29 of Chapter Vrequires you to have access tothis table. You are advised to keepa copy on board, or if this is notpracticable, at least to study thetable before you go boating.

stations, maritime rescue units and aircraft engaged in search and rescue operations.

Search and Rescue Unit Replies
You have been seen, assistance will be given as soonas possible.
Orange smoke flare.
OR
Three white star signals or three light andsound rockets fired at approximately1 minute intervals.
Shore to Ship Signals
Safe to land here.
Vertical waving of both arms, white flag, light or flare.
OR
K
Morse code signal by light or sound.
Landing here is dangerous. Additional signals mean safer landing in direction indicated.
Horizontal waving of white flag, light or flare. Putting oneflag, light or flare on ground and moving off with a secondindicates direction of safer landing.

Land to the right of your current heading.
L:
Land to the left of your current heading.

Air to Surface Direction Signals
Sequence of 3 manoeuvres meaning proceed to this direction.
Circle vessel at least once. Cross low, ahead a vessel
rocking wings.
Overfly vessel and head
in required direction.
Your assistance is no longer required.
Cross low, astern of vessel
rocking wings.
Note: As a non preferred alternative torocking wings, varying engine tone orvolume may be used.
