Planting a seed to read Encouraging children to pick up a book and read is probably one of the most important things we can do. LIFE NEWSPAPERS IN EDUCATION N Ni iE E IN AN online survey conducted by News Corp Australia in June this year, 870 people responded providing a snapshot of the reading habits of Australian families. It revealed one third of parents don’t read or discuss the books their children are studying at school. Did you know? WHETHER it is reading textbooks, newspapers and magazines, comics, Facebook updates, emails, text messages, blog posts, tweets, gaming instructions, a recipe, or even devouring a book cover to cover, there is no argument that reading is an important skill. The ability to read is a life-long skill that is essential in many day to day activities. The manner in which we read may have changed over time with most reading happening online rather than in print but it doesn’t change the fact that the most important thing is the ability to read. Reading in general has been shown to be responsible for the development of vocabulary and general knowledge as well as social growth. Reading allows you to: Function – so you can understand the instructions on things like warning signs Find a job - Many jobs require reading as a part of job performance. Discover new things - Reading books, magazines and the internet means you learn more. Develop your imagination – you can go anywhere in the world or even out of it Write and speak – expand your vocabulary and understanding of word usage. It is the building block of the written and spoken word. Rapt in reading books BOOK BITS Judging a book by its cover The saying goes that you should never judge a book by its cover but sometimes it is useful when choosing a book to look at the cover. It can give you an idea about the content of the book and even help you decide whether to read it or not. Check out the covers of books. Are you able to tell what the book is about from the cover? With your newspaper’s Great Australian Storybook Collection you can collect 15 books starting with a free copy of Possum Magic and collector’s case.
