Made of painted solid pine, VÄRMDÖ rocks

just as nicely indoors as it does outdoors.

Protectors on the feet prevent floor

damage and reduce noise, too.

VÄRMDÖ A clean and simple rocking chair

”It rocked right away,” says designer Nike Karlsson about the new VÄRMDÖ rocking chair. Some furniture is perfect on the first try, both in drawing and production stages. That’s how it was with VÄRMDÖ. The order was for a rocking chair that could be used both indoors and outdoors – on a veranda, terrace, balcony, sun-deck or even in a living room. Nike Karlsson, who has designed chairs before, both rock-ing and ordinary, started as he usually does by sketching a little by hand. And there it was – the rocking chair that would become VÄRMDÖ. Though several sketches and models in different shapes and sizes were made later, something about the first sketch kept the team coming back. It had something that was so natural, a logical simplicity. Building the real model was just as smooth as the draw-ing process. ”We just built it, and it turned out perfect,” says Nike. The original sketch had the right centre of gravity, was balanced even when empty and rocked pleasantly, not too far forward or back. The fantastic thing about VÄRMDÖ is that it’s designed for indoor and outdoor use. Made of pine, the slats on its hori-zontal surfaces (like seats and armrests) are cut with a tech-nique that positions the annual growth rings more vertically instead of horizontally. This makes the wood more durable and decreases surface cracks. Plus, VÄRMDÖ is pretreated with three layers of water based glazing paint so the surface has extra protection and it will take longer before reglazing treatment is needed.

New FALSTER pieces are fit for the balcony

with a smaller square table and stackable

chairs and stools.

FALSTER‘Wood’ without the work

Big backyards or small balconies, the sturdy FALSTER series fits different needs and sizes of outdoor living – all with no maintenance. The majority of new pieces are stackable, practical space savers like a chair, a square 63×63 cm table and a stool. Plus, there’s a new sunbed with an adjust-able back so you can recline and relax. Made of lightweight artificial wood, FALSTER is easy to move, too, whether you’re done for the day or the season. Even the sunbed is easy to move, thanks to its wheels.

Made of polystyrene plastic, the FALSTER series has a natural feeling and looks like solid wood but requires no maintenance. All the pieces can be stored inside or outside since the artificial wood withstands rain, snow, low and high temperatures. The aluminum frames are rustproof, too. And just like wood, FALSTER can be sanded down if it gets a light scratch or two on the slats.

Pink, yellow, grey and even

more white pieces expand the

ROXÖ series this year, with a

matching JOSEF cabinet, too.

ROXÖ and JOSEFBlooming with colour

Last year’s seasonal blue and green ROXÖ colours reflected the sky and the grass. This year, pink and yellow are in bloom. Already introduced white pieces are back again with an expanded selection, complemented by a new dark grey that’s almost black. Chairs, a table, a bench, coffee tables and stools – there’s plenty of variety in the ROXÖ series. Never seen before are roomy deck chairs with arms in pink, grey and white, as well as a new white bench.

Made of steel and coated in a plastic powder, all ROXÖ pieces are durable with no maintenance. They wipe clean with a damp cloth and a mild soap solution. Plus, everything but the bench is stackable.

Already available in grey and white, JOSEF cabinet takes on a pink hue to match ROXÖ. Suitable for indoor and outdoor use, JOSEF has adjustable shelves and feet to customize and level your organization. It also has pre-drilled holes to fasten the cabinet to the wall.

chair matches with this

season’s new colours in the

ROXÖ series.

IKEA PS VÅGÖ Pretty in pink plastic

Carrying on the pink in this season’s palette is the PS VÅGÖ easy chair. First released in 2000, the Thomas Sandell designed piece was re-released last year in white, black and now-retired green. The polypropylene plastic has a cut-out that allows water to drain through. Stackable, lightweight and simple to clean with a damp cloth, it’s no wonder VÅGÖ is called an ‘easy’ chair.

Relax. HÖGSTEN is

a no-maintenance

series made from

plastic rattan.

HÖGSTENAn invitation to relax

“With HÖGSTEN easy chair, I was inspired by the high, hugging back of a wing chair and low beach chairs. Lots of sketches and days in the workshop led to a design that satis-fied me. Relaxing in the sun – that’s what I hope people will think of when they see this inviting furniture.”–Designer Nike Karlsson

The HÖGSTEN series – chair, easy chair and footstool – in-vites you to relax, especially knowing that everything is no maintenance and space saving. Made from hand-woven, durable plastic rat-tan, HÖGSTEN has the same expression as natural rattan without any necessary maintenance. Plastic rattan cleans easily using a soft, damp cloth with mild soap. It also withstands rain, snow, low and high temperatures. For space-saving storage, simply turn and slide the footstool underneath the easy chair. You may even enjoy relaxing in HÖGSTEN so much that it finds a spot inside your home, too.

A small space can become a

relaxation retreat with a cushioned

storage bench and stool.

ÄPPLARÖCustom and clever in solid wood acacia

New to the ÄPPLARÖ series this year are two functions: cus-tomizable low seating sections and clever storage for small spaces. With a new corner section, one seat section and table/stool, any number of modular sofa solutions are pos-sible. In addition to a foldable stool, a new storage bench, wall panel and shelf maximize space to create an area for you to store and organize your garden tools, plant pots, toys, whatever! Also, all ÄPPLARÖ furniture (even pre-existing products) now come with a dark brown finish. Named after an island in Stockholm’s archipelago that’s a nature reserve area, it’s a natural fit that we take such care in the solid wood of the ÄPPLARÖ outdoor living series. A durable hardwood, acacia is the most common species in our outdoor range. We source it mainly from plantations in Vietnam and Malaysia, where we work to improve forestry and increase the amount of wood that is independently veri-fied as coming from responsibly managed sources. Like all wood in IKEA products, acacia follows our requirements on harvesting and legality. (See the following page for the requirements list.) IKEA contributes in this way to ensure that wood is also available in the future, so we can all enjoy the outdoors for years to come.

All ÄPPLARÖ furniture is pretreated with an extra thick layer of glazing paint to increase durability and prolong the time before reglazing is required. Reglazing helps acacia retain its good condition and extend its lifetime. Frequency and amount of reglazing depends on location as well as amounts of sun, rain and overall usage.

PE303113

13news OUTDOOR 2012

At IKEA, we love wood. It’s strong, sturdy, versatile and beautiful. Moreover, we love nature and being outdoors. That’s why we care about where our wood comes from and have the following minimum requirements for all wood in IKEA products:

• Not come from illegally harvested forests

• Not come from forestry operations engaged in forest-related social conflicts

• Not harvested from uncertified Intact Natural Forests (INF) or High Conservation Value Forests (HCVF)

• Not harvested from natural forests in the tropical or subtropical regions being converted to plantations or non-forest use

• Not come from officially recognized and geographically identified com-mercial Genetically Modified (GM) tree plantations

Put your feet up with the SUNDERÖ

deck chair and footstool in grey-

stained pine.

SUNDERÖA designer’s deck inspires a series

IKEA designer Mikael Warnhammar had just finished build-ing a sundeck in his home’s garden when he found himself standing there with a piece of wood left over, and nowhere to sit. Rather than fetching a chair he already had somewhere, Mikael decided to build one. (He isn’t the kind of person to sit around doing nothing.) Designing armchairs is something Mikael has done many times, but he usually starts by drawing, and then mak-ing prototypes. Because this armchair was for himself, he skipped the drawing stage and started to saw. Wide planks became wooden slats, which he put together like a fan in the back. Generous armrests were needed for arms, of course, and perhaps a cup of coffee. He cut and hammered for a few days until he arrived at a design that suited both him and his sundeck per-fectly. He didn’t stop with one chair either, making two chairs and a small table. When Mikael was asked to be part of a workshop at IKEA to find new outdoor furniture ideas, he thought: ‘that chair I made at home – it would suit IKEA too.’ So instead of bringing a draw-ing to work, he brought a product developer from IKEA home to see his armchair.

PE305618

16news OUTDOOR 2012

Needless to say, the chair was a natural fit at IKEA. SUNDERÖ looks almost exactly the same as Mikael’s original. Some changes are always necessary, to be able to pack down the pieces in a flat pack for efficient transport and to make it easy to assemble at home. But otherwise, it’s the same. It’s made in pine, just like Mikael’s original, and

stained grey to emulate the weather-beaten piece of wood from the sundeck. The armchair has been joined by a table, bench and deck chair with an accompany-ing footstool to make the SUNDERÖ series. When cutting the pine for horizontal surfaces of SUNDERÖ furniture (like table tops, seats and armrests), we use a technique that posi-

tions the annual growth rings more vertically instead of horizontally. This makes the wood more durable and decreases surface cracks. Plus, SUNDERÖ is pretreated with three lay-ers of water based glazing paint to better withstand outdoor use. The surface is extra durable and it will take longer before reglaz-ing treatment is needed.

SOLVINDENPowered by nature

Harnessing the power of the sun (and so-metimes the wind, too), the SOLVINDEN series converts nature’s energy into power for warm, white LED lighting. Fully charged batteries provide 4 to 12 hours of light, which is enough for any outdoor celebration to last well into the night! Plus, their cordless nature puts light wherever you want.

Inspired by the playfulness and movement of

amusement park lamps, these SOLVINDEN lamps

are the first from IKEA to be both sun and wind

powered. The designers and product developers

worked closely with the supplier – even driving

around holding a prototype out the window – to test

the wind-power until everything worked.
