Life in FloresIn the

Twentieth Century

•What was home life like in Flores seventy or forty years ago?

•Were houses big? And their gardens?

•What kind of clothes did women and men

wear? And the children? How did they wear their hair?

•What did people do in their free time?

We, the children in 5th “A”,

“5mentarios”,

have been investigating …

In those days, having a photograph taken

was not an everyday activity. People usually took photos on special occasions,

and they often wore their best clothes.

Women wore long dresses and skirts, tights

and high-heeled shoes. They sometimes

wore gloves and hats. They carried small, elegant handbags.

Girls usually wore short elegant dresses or

skirts, socks and shoes. They wore ribbons and bows in their hair.

A lot of people lived in houses. Buildings and flats were not as usual as today .

houses were usually large with big gardens full of grass, flowers, plants and even

trees. People spent a lot of time there.

some houses had patios with tiles with nice

designs. Adults usually sat and talked there while children played.

in this photo you can see a small girl playing with a

toy baby.

Families usually got together on Sundays.

They had lunch and talked . The children played, usually in the big gardens or in the

corridors. Girls usually played quiet games.

in this photo you can see a group of girls in a garden

swing made of wood.

Boys usually played quite rough games.

They enjoyed football and played for

hours and hours. Boys wore shorts and

T-shirts or shirts with a tie.

They always wore their hair short.

Both girls and boys enjoyed riding

bicycles and tricycles. Tricycles were bigger than the ones we have today.

Older children played with them.

People also spent some of their free time in their living-rooms.

They liked to listen to music.

They listened to records in record

players. they didn't have CDs in
