The Goodyear Fire Department knows with dry conditions and hotter temperatures
just around the corner, it increases the chances for wildfires. The department is being proactive in taking steps to make things safer where it is much needed: In the
Corgett Wash area of the Estrella community.
The Corgett Wash area in Estrella is overgrown with various types of vegetation. This overgrowth poses a potential immediate fire risk to the residences along West San Carlos Drive (the 18600 Block) and to the nearby Corgett Wash Water Reclamation Plant.
Thanks to a Federal Bureau of Land Management grant of up to $25,000, Goodyear is developing a program that will help to thin fuel material and reduce the risk or at least lessen the intensity of wild fires if they happen in that area. Once approved, experienced forestry crews from local detention facilities will work under supervision, along with members of the Goodyear Fire Department wild land firefighting team, to thin vegetation from public lands and Estrella property in the wash. Work will only take place on association property under this plan with full knowledge and approval of the Board of Directors. This program has been used in other Arizona municipalities to great effect. Heavy equipment, such as bulldozers, is prohibited. The approach to fuel thinning is described as “mosaic” and the fire breaks are cut in a “chevron” fashion in order to minimize the negative impact to the natural beauty of the area.
The Goodyear Fire Department is focused upon the safety of its citizens. From time to time, certain hazards come up to our attention, and it is the City’s aim to work in a sustainable manner to reduce hazards and prevent emergencies.

Kevin Wells
CCMC is proud to have such an excellent staff to assist the Estrella

resorts, as well as, in Denver, Colorado Springs and Pueblo. While in California, Kevin held a variety of Construction Management positions where he was responsible for the testing of construction materials for the development of commercial and residential projects. Since living in Arizona he has held positions as Superintendent, Construction Manager and Project Manager in which he was responsible for a range of projects for the development of single family homes.
Kevin enjoys spending time with family and enjoys the Sierra Nevada and Rocky Mountains and boating on the open water. Kevin and his wife are involved in their church community and have a passion for helping others. Estrella and CCMC are proud to have the talents Kevin brings to our community.
Ahoy, Captain! Estrella Yacht Club busier Than EverBy Renee Bammel, Communications Committee Member
Terry Hammond
The Yacht Club’s new captain, Terry Hammond, has drawn more and more
people back to the Yacht Club. The free boating class, held once a month, had 15 students for March. On a windy day it’s perfect for the sail boats and a bit challenging for the paddle boarders. Terry is friendly, informative and is very excited
to be here. He grew up boating off an island where he lived in Washington State. Terry has been coming to Estrella to visit his niece Pam Schaeffer and other relatives for the past 16 years. Terry loves the lakes and always dreamed of retiring here. His sister moved here seven years ago and let him know there was a house for sale a block away and he jumped on the opportunity to fulfill his dream.
He wanted to volunteer at the Yacht Club, but instead was offered the position of the new boat captain. The Yacht Club was in danger of being closed for good, but Terry cleaned and organized it with the help from two Estrella residents, Doug Bradwin and Paul Farkrell.
The Yacht Club obtained new boats for residents to enjoy. He offers sailing classes and has introduced fun obstacle courses and timing competitions. The best time wins a gift card and bragging right of the “Sailor of the Month”. Terry anticipates bringing more events for residents to enjoy. So come on out and enjoy a day of boating!

As you may have noticed, there have been some recent upgrades to the cardio
machines in the Starpointe Fitness Center. The much anticipated equipment arrived the end of February and the overall feedback from the residents has been positive. The treadmills, elliptical, recumbent bikes, and the upright bike have all been upgraded with brand new models and brand new features that you can enjoy. Some of the new features are:
• Quick access to speed, incline, and resistance on the hand grips of the treadmills and bikes
• HRC Cruise Control which allows the user to “lock in” a specific heart rate–the machines will automatically adjust the settings to not allow the user to go above this targeted heart rate
• Orthopedic foot pads on the ellipticals and orthopedic running surface on the treadmills
• Built in TV tuners that allow the users to select any one of the four televisions in the cardio area to watch by simply plugging in your headphones and selecting the desired television
• Wireless Heart Rate Monitoring with Polar Heart Rate Monitors
• iPod compatibility for charging and entertainment
• USB thumb drive which allows the user to save their workout data
These are just some of the many features the new machines offer. Along with this new transition from old to new, we listened to the resident concerns and were able to increase the number of ellipticals and put in an additional StairMaster Step-Mill.
We would love to hear your feedback on the new equipment. In addition, if you have any ideas or suggestions for any classes you believe Starpointe should offer or a piece of equipment that you feel you would like to see in the fitness center, give me a call or e-mail me at [email protected].

mountain ranch marketplace Submitted by Newland Communities
We have learned from those purchasing at Estrella as well as our own residents that having a nearby grocery store as well
as neighborhood conveniences located within the community were important when looking for their next home. Mountain Ranch Marketplace was designed with that in mind and our much appreciated retail center continues to grow and has recently welcomed new merchants.
The much anticipated NAILcessity Spa officially opened on February 27th! Located right next to Safeway, the salon offers a variety of manicures and pedicures - including acrylics and gel nails – as well as body waxing services. The spa boasts more than 200 colors of polish and a variety of relaxing treatments and mani/pedi upgrades to choose from. Catering to their client’s busy schedules NAILcessity’s convenient hours of operations are Monday –Saturday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A center you can be proud to have in the community, Mountain Ranch Marketplace was built to be environmentally friendly and has been granted LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification. It is the first neighborhood shopping center in Arizona – and one of the few in the United States to be LEED Gold certified. LEED is the top program in the United States for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. To qualify for LEED certifications, a project must meet high standards in several areas including water and energy efficiency, environmentally friendly building materials and innovation in design. Among the many sustainable elements incorporated into its design are high-efficiency 15-SEER heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) units, low-flow water fixtures and insulated low-emissivity glass windows. The materials used in construction included paints and adhesives with low levels of volatile organic compounds and highly reflective roofing materials to reduce the urban-heat-island effect.
At full build-out, the 22-acre center will provide 165,000 feet of grocery, drug and retail space and includes anchor tenant, Safeway as well as: Anderson Institute of Music & Performing Arts, Chase Bank, Estrella Family Dentistry, FroGo Frozen Yogurt,
Great Clips, McDonalds, Oasis Bagels, Papa John’s Pizza, Phoenix Children’s Academy, ReMax, Subway and Walgreens. Kitchell Construction, the managing partner for Mountain Ranch Marketplace continues to be focused on bringing the types of services that residents continue to request. Be on the lookout for upcoming announcements about other openings including ProCare Physical Therapy as well as new retailers to be coming soon.

LANDSCAPE>>>SNiPPEtS
Spring is here, Summer is Near!By Four Peaks Landscape Management, Inc.
Spring has arrived and now is a great time to be out in the landscape getting it ready for the coming summer months. A couple of items
should be taken care of now if they haven’t already. Remove all frost damage from plants. Given that we have had a mild winter the damage was probably minimal, however do not let that discourage you from thinning out and rejuvenating your frost sensitive plants. Pruning stimulates new growth, and new growth is what produces blooms. You will see your plants recover from the pruning very quickly and you will see new color as well.
As you may have noticed some insects in your landscape, most will be here for a short period of time causing minimal damage to plants. If you see them you can use water to spray them off. There are products available such as insecticidal soaps, and systemic herbicides for tougher problems. Please choose the product you are most comfortable with and follow the directions on the label.
Tune up your irrigation system by operating each valve from the controller and inspecting the plants and areas it waters to ensure you do not have any leaks or damaged components. Also check your soil moisture and if necessary turn up your water days to provide additional water. Remember you want to let the soil dry out a bit before you add more water. Make sure you move your drip emitters to your trees away from the base of the tree and out to the ends
of the branches. This is where the root system is and will help establish stronger roots away from the base of the tree to provide greater support.
If you have winter grass planted in your lawn you will want to be sure that you are lowering the cutting height of the turf as we progress toward the summer. This will help with a better transition from rye grass to summer bermuda. Feed your turf now with a well balanced fertilizer and keep you water consistent, making sure not to over water.
We have a couple of months to enjoy the outdoors and our landscape. With a little work now it will be beautiful for the summer.

The Estrella Pickleball Club was established in January of 2012 to promote fun, exercise, community, and friendships all the while
playing pickleball. Pickleball is basically oversized Ping-Pong played on a badminton sized-court using paddles and a type of whiffleball.
Our mission statement is to promote and teach the game of pickleball to individuals of all ages while encouraging sportsmanship and friendships with our neighbors near and far.
There are approximately 130 members in the Estrella Pickleball Club from ages 21 to 90.

Estrella Tennis By Estrella Tennis Group
Q: What do you serve, but not eat? A: A Tennis Ball
Looking to play tennis with new friends, join the Tennis Club of Estrella. I was playing tennis the other night. Thinking to myself, I wonder
who came up with the idea of tennis? Well in the 12th century, French monks played a game called ‘ Jeu de paumme’ (palm game). They hit the ball originally with their hand. Eventually adapted to a leather glove, then a racquet. The Tennis Club of Estrella plays with a racquet, not our hands. Our club comprises of a diverse group of individuals. There is a match-up for every level, from beginner to professional. The club plays year round. The Tennis Club is here to have fun, socialize and get some exercise. The website to join all of this fun is meetup.com/tennis-club-of-Estrella. It’s free to join, or stop by Bougainvillea (Montecito)Park on any Wednesday around 6pm and we will be playing. We do play other days, depending on when people want to get together. If you are looking to get back into the swing of things or want to learn how to play tennis, contact the Estrella Tennis Club administrators Tom Workman ([email protected]) and Dale Behm ([email protected]). Join now and experience the taste of serving while having some fun, and getting to know new members of your community.

A couple of years ago, Estrella Foothills High School (and the entire Buckeye Union High School District) implemented a BYOD (“Bring
Your Own Device”) program where students are allowed to bring their own electronic devices to campus to be used for educational purposes. As part of this initiative, students and parents sign an agreement that outlines appropriate use of technology.
The BYOD program has opened up many opportunities to engage students in learning as teachers ask questions and students use devices to quickly discover answers, as online polling apps allow students to vote on things and see answers instantaneously, as students design webpages and figure out how easy it is to obtain and communicate information in the digital age, and so on. And, these opportunities are allowing students to learn to use technology as a tool for being productive in school – which will hopefully transfer to work and their everyday lives.
With all the exciting things I see as technology is used in classrooms, I also worry that students sign the agreement without truly reading or understanding some of the guidelines provided that are intended to keep themselves and other students safe. And, I worry that parents trust that filters we have on the network provide foolproof protection from all inappropriate matter on the internet – which no filtering system can do.
So, here are a few of the things, informed by the agreement, that I fear young people do without realizing the harm that can be done to themselves and others.
SeCuriTyI fear that students share passwords and personal information too readily. They answer questions about themselves and check-in with their location frequently. By following our youth online, too much can be learned about their whereabouts and their activities.
DigiTaL FooTPrinTI fear that students don’t realize the lasting impact on their futures what they post online can have. The opinions they give, the profanity they use, the derogatory things they say about others, the pictures of things such as underage drinking or violence they post are often accessed by college recruiters, future employers, and just about anyone who wants to know something about them.
iMPaCT on oTHerSI fear that students are braver behind the device and say things they wouldn’t say face-to-face. I also fear that they forget that when they say things about other people, those people are real and the pain it causes has a lasting impact on the one who is hurt.
CreDiBiLiTyI fear that students do not question what they read online for validity. They take things at face value and base decisions they make on false information.
As powerful as technology is, and as much as we all can’t live without it, I feel we need to be educating our children and youth how to use it safely and monitoring them as they use it.

You’re invited to join Officers Webster and Nottingham for Coffee with a Cop, a quarterly event hosted at different locations
around the City of Goodyear.
Residents are invited to enjoy free coffee and to meet with police officers and neighbors to share ideas, ask questions, and learn how to keep family and homes safe from crime.
Residents are the greatest resource in keeping neighborhoods safe and homes secure. Coffee with a Cop is a great opportunity for citizens to meet with officers in an informal setting and talk about concerns.
Come any time between 8-10AM, enjoy a cup of coffee provided by our host and meet your local police officers. (Breakfast items available for purchase)

CITY
It doesn’t seem that long ago when the city of Goodyear conducted a citizen survey to see what our residents would like to see the most in the city.
The year was 2009, and the number one answer? A new library with more space and expanded services.
Fast forward to 2014. That dream has become a reality and we celebrated the opening in grand fashion on Feb. 28 in the new Goodyear Branch of the Maricopa County Library at 14455 W. Van Buren Street, Suite C-101. Numerous county and ASU officials as well as city leaders that partnered on the project were present at the ribbon cutting ceremony and spoke about the facility and the expansion of ASU’s Alexandria Networking space in Goodyear – The Innovationhub@GoodyearAZ.
The incubator, or co-working space, is a free resource where entrepreneurs and local business owners can meet for research and discuss ideas. Visitors also can have access to ASU’s database of 3,000 “mentors” offering advice for specific businesses. It is the first such space in the West Valley.
As libraries advance into the digital age and less people have come into the library in recent times, they are returning to their roots as places where
people can meet. The Alexandria Network is derived from a centuries-old concept originating in Egypt in Third Century B.C. when libraries also were used for meeting places.
Overall, the library was a $1.1 million project housing the 9,600-square-foot facility. It features more than 5,000 books, eight computer stations for public use, DVDs, reading programs for children, and a multi-purpose room, upgrading our city services and enhancing our quality of life.
The library also features a kiosk from the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office to print documents.
The Innovationhub@GoodyearAZ comes just in time for innovators as the F-35 II Fighter-pilot jet training program is starting up at Luke Air Force Base and scheduled to be unveiled at Luke on March 14. Those looking to start support businesses for the F-35 program or those looking to brainstorm with others or simply tap into the resources can come to the Goodyear library.
All of this happened thanks to a regional partnership and teamwork between the city of Goodyear, the
Maricopa County Library District, and Arizona State University’s SkySong Business Center. The Goodyear Branch of the Maricopa County Library is bigger and better, no doubt.
To say we’re excited would be an understatement. As the city of Goodyear has continued to grow, we outgrew the 1,800-square-foot space in its former location at 250 N. Litchfield Road.
Now, we’re in a bigger and better space with more services, thanks to you.

‘50s Sock HopSaturday, September 21st, 7:00pm to 9:00pm Starpointe Residents Club Cocktails and Conversations is going back in time! We are putting on our poodle skirts and greasing back our hair so that we can hop back to the 1950s for a good ‘ole fashioned Sock Hop complete with a live band and a car show by the Estrella Mountain Car Club.
‘That Kool Band’ will be out to perform a two hour show that is sure to have you tapping your toes or dancing up a storm. They will be bringing us their show titled ‘At the Hop,’ a musi-cal tribute to some of the greatest Rock & Roll stars of the ‘50s and ‘60s including ‘The Beach Boys,’ ‘The Beatles,’ ‘Dion and the Belmonts,’ and many, many more. They preformed here in Estrella last May and many of those that attended have said they put on a great show so you don’t want to miss them.
Members of the Estrella Mountain Car club will be displaying some of their hot rods and unique car collections at the event, too. This club is a group of 30 residents and guests whose members own over 40 unique automobiles. The years and models of these cars range from current convertibles to exotic imports to restored hotrods. You don’t have to be a member of the Estrella Mountain Car Club to show off your car. If you have a unique or classic car that you would like to display at the event there will be spaces in the parking lot reserved for you to show off your cars, too.
Dinner will include a classic menu of burgers, chips, and side salads catered by Dad’s Catering. The evening’s signature

drinks will include a “Root Beer Float” made with root beer and cream flavored vodka, and a Chocolate Shake, which is very similar to a mudslide with Kahlua and Bailey’s Irish Cream. We will also offer beer wine and a variety of sodas.

You are welcomed to bring your non-resident guests for an additional $5 guest fee. You must be 21 years of age or over to purchase wristbands for this event and the deadline to purchase tickets is September 18th.
Story Time at Starpointe Thursday, September 5th, 10:30amFreeIn honor of Ballet Under the Stars performance by Ballet Ari-zona we will be reading Angelina Ballerina written by Katha-rine Holabird and Illustrated by Helen Craig. Angelina Ballerina was first introduced over 20 years ago and is now the spokes character for National Dance Week. With Katharine Holabird’s lively writing and Helen Craig’s charming illustrations, the origi-nal story about the feisty little mouse who wants nothing more than to dance still keeps young ballerinas leaping with delight. After the story stick around and make a craft to take with you.

Are you ready to sell your Estrella home?
ESTRELLA COMMUNITY
I have a successful track record and a long list of satisfied clients including many of your Estrella neighbors! My average time to sell a home is just 44 days! And, my listings typically sell for no less than 97% of the original list price!
My selling strategy for each home is tailored to fit my clients’ specific needs. I know my clients by name and know the details and selling features of their homes. When an interested buyer calls me with a question about a home I am selling I have the answer and do not need to pause and “look it up.”
Sharing my office with Darinzona Appraisal Services, (my husband is also an appraiser!) I have learned to accurately estimate your home’s sale price. If you are ready to sell your Estrella home and want to know what your financial outcome will be, call me!
I love what I do and I would love to do it for you!

T.W. LEWIS BY DAVID WEEKLEY HOMES DEBUTS NEW MODELS
RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT: KIM DOUD A transplant from Southern California, Kim Doud (pictured far left) has been an Estrella resident for the past 14 years. When initially looking for a new home, it was important for Doud to be as close to water as possible in the Arizona desert and still enjoy nearby hiking and mountain biking. When he first saw Estrella with its lakes, fountains and yacht club all nestled in the Estrella Mountain foothills he knew he had found home.

You may have seen Doud around the community, pouring his efforts – and likely some blood and sweat along the way – into building and maintaining Estrella’s impressive trails system. Doud first got involved with Estrella’s Trails Committee as a way to help residents truly enjoy the beauty of the area “without a motor” through extensive foot and bike paths. The Trails Committee is a volunteer group of residents which plans and builds the trails as a service to enhance their community. The committee works to ensure the trails meet regulation standards and its members physically install the trails themselves using rakes, pick-axes, pry-bars and shovels to clear pathways entirely by hand! Recently the committee was able to open the Topo Trail which connects to an access point into Estrella Mountain Regional Park. Entrance requires a park pass or $2 with a receipt given at a deposit post affectionately called an Iron Ranger. Currently the committee is working to design and build an approved system of new trails east of Estrella Parkway. The project, Up Trails, will work to eliminate unapproved/unsustainable trails in the area. Anyone interested in joining Kim on the Trails Committee can email him at [email protected] for more information.
“People say to me, ‘You live almost 10 miles south of the freeway up in the foothills?!’ And I respond by saying, yep, and every time I drive up the parkway and see the lake, I relax – exhale – and acknowledge to myself that it’s good to be home!”
On March 29, T.W. Lewis by David Weekley Homes hosted a grand opening for its highly anticipated neighborhood, Golf Canyon at Estrella. The event marked the official opening of four new models and featured plenty of family friendly activities
