Can We Set More Standards Like This? Let me give a shout out to our men’s softball team! They may not know how their attitudes

made a difference during their play on the softball field, but fruit for our church family has been

the result of their self-control and joy for the game. You see, sitting in the stands and across the

diamond were people who witnessed graciousness in the face of defeat and good sportsmanship

and it spoke to them. Your positive attitudes and teamwork was talked about with some who did

not even attend your games! Gentlemen, thank you so much for representing our LORD in your

everyday living!

Living according to the high standards of the LORD can be challenging and frustrating.

Compromise and rationalization come so easy. Before we know it, we begin to buy into the shal-

low standards of the world and call it worship. That is exactly what happened when Moses was

away from the Israelites for 40 days. Whether out of fear, ignorance, or a desire to control their

fate, the people talked Aaron into making a golden calf and then celebrated and worshiped as if it

was in honor to the LORD.

It is crazy, isn’t it, what we are willing to rationalize? In Jeremiah’s day, the Israelites were

taken captive by the Babylonians. They had been warned countless numbers of times about what

their idolatry and disregard for the LORD would bring, but they would not listen. When Babylon

came and laid siege to Jerusalem, conditions became so destitute that people did horrific things in

an attempt to survive. God had clearly foretold what would happen if they turned away from their

covenant with Him and they were now reaping what they had sown. Amazingly, instead of allow-

ing their punishment to turn them back to God, they reasoned that it was their neglect of the Queen

of Heaven (a false deity) that caused their problems (Jeremiah 44:15-23). They refused to wor-

ship the LORD only and spurned His warnings.

When the LORD told Israel to be holy as He is holy, it was not so they would be saved! They

had already been rescued from their oppression and given promises of an inheritance (just like us).

He called them to holiness because that is how life is best lived. When other nations witnessed a

different standard that brought incredible blessings, they would seek the LORD for themselves.

God wants people to see what they could experience if they surrendered to His ways, and what

better way to show that than through the lives of those who profess relationship with Him?

Once again, thank you gentlemen for you integrity, good sportsmanship and loyalty to the

ways of the LORD. May your witness continue to produce harvest after harvest of good fruit for

the Kingdom!
