The author of the Book of Proverbs expresses the concern a father would have toward his children. To attain wisdom one has to submit to the instructions of parents and teachers. The reward is wisdom and honour (Prov. 4:1-9).

Parental teaching is natural even to animals but as God’s people, we are expected to impart much more to our children. They are given to parents on loan by the Creator (Ps. 127:3-4). We have to teach them God’s wisdom and truth, especially the fear of the Lord (Prov. 1:7; 9:10; Ps. 34:11).

Today, however, education is merely a necessity for economic prosperity. The guru has lost control over the sishyas. This leaves every learner with questions such as: ‘Do I love to be taught?’ ‘Do I love to be corrected?’ ‘Do I appreciate those who tell me how it ought to be done?’ ‘Am I willing to alter long established views and habits to grow in the knowledge and truth of God!’ To these the prudent will say ‘yes’ (Prov. 13:18) but the sluggish will hate rebuke (Prov. 12:1). Seminar on Orientation of NABL Accreditation for Clinical LaboratoriesCMAI, with the support of NABL, organised a seminar on Orientation of NABL Accreditation for Clinical Laboratories on 30 July 2010 at MOSCH, Kolenchery, Kerala, with 75 participants.

Mr Anil Relia, Director, NABL, inaugu-rated the Seminar. Rt Rev Dr K G Daniel, CSI Bishop-East Kerala Diocese, wel-comed the gathering and Rev M T Tharian, Regional Secretary, CMAI, concluded the Inaugural Session.

The technical sessions were covered by Dr Aparna Dhawan, Accreditation Officer, NABL; Dr Thuppil Venkatesh, Principal Advisor, QCI and Dr K V Ragi, Sr Quality Manager, DDRC Piramal Group.

The seminar concluded with a panel discussion.

Dear friends,

Greetings in Jesus’ matchless name!

Being “faithful in little things”, in other words being faithful with what is presently assigned to us, is expected of us followers of Christ Jesus. We can rightly and for sure expect rewards from God our Father when we are FAITHFUL in little things.

It’s been a time of planning the CMAI Central India Students’ Conference 2010 which we plan to continue as an annual event in Central India – this time it was in Padhar Hospital, Betul district, MP on 28 & 29 August with Dr George Chandy, Dr Vinod Shah and Dr Victor Choudhrie as resource persons.

As you are aware, the CMAI National Conference for Doctors, 2010, is to be held between 18-20 November in Kottayam district, Kerala, near the backwaters – don’t miss this!

I also spent valuable time at the Institute of Palliative Medicine in Calicut, Kerala, where the 1-year Fellowship in Palliative Medicine is going on. There is a suggestion to have a similar program in geriatric medicine to address the ever growing need for providing care to the elderly in our country. We value your inputs and suggestions towards bringing this to fruition.

The Doctors’ Regional Sectional Secretaries will be conducting regional retreats or workshops in their respective regions before the end of 2010. Please contact them for more information.

The best possible thing one can do is to train and equip new leaders for the future of our many mission institutions.

We thank you our members all over the country for your roles in CMAI and urge you to think creatively and get actively involved so that together we can take the mission of CMAI forward.

In Christ

IPM – CMAI 1-year Fellowship in Palliative Care The new batch for the 1-year Fellowship in Palliative Care (distance education) has started at the Institute of Palliative Care, Calicut, with about 20 students – including dentists, an anaesthesiologist, a general surgeon and other senior and junior doctors who have a special interest in palliative care. IPM Calicut has full-fledged training programmes going

on, with good facilities and accommodation for students and faculty.

Dr John Thomas, CMAI, attended 3 days of the initial contact classes for the 1-year Fellowship in Palliative Medicine. He had a meeting with Dr Rajashree, who co-ordinates the program in Calicut, and discussed how to move forward involving more centres, especially in Northern India.

Institutions and individuals wanting to be trained in palliative care can contact Dr John

Thomas (email:[email protected]) or Dr Ronald Lalthanmawia (email: [email protected]). The course has three contact sessions – the first contact session of 10 days is in August and the last contact session of 3 weeks is in July with another session of 2 weeks in between according to suitability.

Central India Visit Dr John Thomas, CMAI, visited Bhopal, Raipur and Nagpur and invited medical and dental students from different medical colleges through personal meetings with them. The leadership of Evangelical Mission Hospital, Tilda; Christian Hospital, Mungeli; doctors at Ambedkar Hospital, Raipur and many doctors and administrators extended valuable help on this visit.

Dear Members,

Greetings in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ!

We were invited by the Director of Regional Resource Centre for NRHM (Northeast India) to help strengthen nursing training in Assam. The first consultation was held on 9 & 10 August at Guwahati. God willing, we will be able to help other states of the Northeast in this way. This is recognition of the fact that we have been maintaining high standards in nursing education. It is high time we raised standards of those less fortunate than us.

A competent and motivated health workforce saves lives. It is important for strengthening the health care system of the country. However, many factors prevent nurses from becoming fully competent. One of these is the mushrooming of private nursing schools and colleges. For many institutions, the quality of nursing education is far below expected standards. The major reasons are lack of teachers, lack of affiliation to hospitals, inadequate exposure to clinical areas and lack of infrastructure. This has become a great concern for the country in general and the nursing fraternity in particular.

Taking this issue into consideration, the Nurses League of CMAI plans to start a skill enhancement programme to help young nurses in the country. The duration of the course is three months. The curriculum for this training has been prepared and we expect to start it by the beginning of 2011.

I would like to remind you of the forthcoming NL Conference from 25-27

November 2010 in Kerala. Please plan your leaves to attend this wonderful time of fellowship. You will be getting the brochures soon. Thank you for your prayers and support.

CMAI’s monitoring visit to local partners in GujaratTo assess the progress and variety of activities organised through the CHIN Phase II project, a visit was made to three districts in Gujarat namely Tapi, Baroda and Sabarkantha.

The local partner NGOs present there are do-ing good work in taking the message of NRHM entitlements to the communities through different modes of communication.

There is also very good support from the block and district health officials to ensure proper service delivery.

All the state partners will be attending a national level training in Bhubhaneshwar in September 2010.

The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) Workshop was held in Chennai on 2 July 2010 at Abu Palace, Poonamallee High Road. The next workshop will be held in Mumbai. Two more workshops are being planned for Kerala and Kolkata / Shillong. Please contact me for more details.

I have sent a comprehensive question-naire to all member hospitals, in order to collect information on energy consumption, energy efficiency measures and renewable energy installations. Some have already returned completed forms, based on which we are proposing measures that could significantly reduce the cost of maintaining facilities. Please contact me if you would like to avail of this opportunity.

Dear friends in His vineyard!

We are the chosen generation called to labour in His vineyard. Time runs very fast – many juniors have become seniors, seniors have retired and so on. Within the short time given to us, we are called by our master Jesus to accomplish the entire task set before us.

We are getting ready for the National Conference and I invite you all to participate. Do send in the filled in registration forms at the earliest. If you have not received the forms, please download the conference brochure from the CMAI website and send it to us after filling the details.

Many of you may remember that I asked you to send nominations for the Alan Cranmer award. Please search, select and send nominations of persons you find suitable for the same. He / she should have long service in any Allied Health field and should have achieved / contributed in their respective area.

We are now enrolling candidates for the IGNOU degree programmes. It is great to see more students enrolled this year as compared to last year. We are having a Tutors Orientation programme at Cochin in September. Recently all convenors came together for a meeting at IGNOU, designed the exam pattern and constituted sub-committees for paper setting, evaluating answer scripts and moderation. We have also decided to form an Equivalence Committee to work out criteria which will allow alumni of CMAI programmes and others to avail the opportunity of joining the Degree Programme through lateral entry. Please send your suggestions and ideas quickly.

Our challenges are many and I request your prayers to attain success. Let us show sincerity, loyalty and perseverance in the places where we have been put.

Rev Job Jayaraj and I had a fruitful visit to four of our member hospitals in Chhattisgarh region. Christian Fellowship Hospital, Ra-jnandgaon, part of the Ashram movement, was founded by Dr P A Abraham in the 1940s. In addition to hospital services, the hospital is actively involved in community health and development initiatives.

Our second visit was to Evangelical Mission Hospital, Tilda, where Dr Satyajit Jiwanmall is in charge. The team is doing exemplary work in a needy area of our country. Rev Job and I spoke with the staff during morning devotions.

At Christian Hospital, Mungeli, where Dr Teresa Henry was our host, many new things are happening. The hospital is building a cancer therapy unit supported by Government of Chhattisgarh.

There was an overwhelming response to the Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh Regional Conference held at Dhamtari Christian Hospital from 13-14 August 2010; there were more than 100 delegates. It was an occasion for great joy and learning where each hospital narrated its story and current status. The Bible studies were taken by Dr Joseph Emmanuel, Champa Christian Hospital, and Rev Job Jayaraj, CMAI. Dr Sunil Chatterjee has been elected the Regional Secretary of the MP and Chhat-tisgarh region.

CMAI has initiated the CEOs forum of CMAI member hospitals. The first CEO fo-rum meeting will be organised in Hyderabad on 11 September. Operation Blessing India, one of our member institutions, has agreed to host the meeting.

The NABH work continues and more institutions have expressed the desire to work towards this.

Do uphold us in your prayers.
