Guzaarish, a recent and well-received Hindi film, is about a paraplegic ex- magician, Ethan, who, confined to bed and wheelchair, has started a popular radio show “Radio Zindagi”. He spreads hope and laughter

through his irrepressible wit and inspirational advice. His nurse and he share a bond, which is uplifting in its spirit and the way it is depicted.

On the 14th anniversary of his accident, Ethan, tired of his helplessness, appeals to the court for euthanasia. His best friend, a lawyer, initially hesitates but later understands and argues his case. Ethan’s mother supports his petition. His physician, after much resistance, allows his friendship to overcome medical ethics. On Ethan’s radio programme, however, most of his audience vote against his decision. Finally, the court rules that euthanasia is not permitted by the law of the land.

The ethics, morality, cruelty and kindness of Ethan’s dilemma are well-portrayed, causing the actors and the audience to experience a whirlwind of emotions from rage to sorrow, laughter to tears. In the closing scenes, having decided for euthanasia with assistance from his nurse, Ethan throws a farewell party for his friends, acknowledging the love he has received. They all hug him, and it is clear he has won them over to his cause.

The crucial question is: Has Ethan won the audience over to the cause of euthanasia?

Why is the question crucial? Several cases for euthanasia have recently been fought and lost in courts. No doubt, India will soon experience another legal challenge to the law against euthanasia. Earlier, public opinion had been mixed. Now, this film will strongly influence public, judicial and legislative opinion.

The Bible is clearly against euthanasia, as are almost all religions. From the societal point of view, while there is often a strong sympathy element in individual cases, there is a much greater likelihood of misuse by greedy relatives. There will be planned efforts to isolate and emotionally destroy those who are vulnerable and push them towards euthanasia. Can the benefit for a few justify almost-murder of many? There are many other arguments against euthanasia.

As Christians, we cannot be silent. Our faith demands that we speak up, as should our concern to protect those who are pushed to embrace death by the greed-driven rejection of those whom they loved and nurtured. They cannot defend themselves. We need to raise our voice, to actively sensitise those around us and join hands with others. Let us not wait till it is too late.

Dear colleagues,

Wish you all a blessed, successful and prosperous 2011 in Christ Jesus!

As 2010 comes to a close and 2011 sets in, it should be a time of evaluation of the past and setting of new goals for all our activities, which should in turn bring fruit into the Kingdom of God. There will always be things we should have done better or avoided. Instead of beating oneself up, one can learn from the past and look ahead with fresh hope which we always have because of God’s grace lavished on us through Jesus Christ.

With great joy, I am reporting here that we had a successful Doctors’ Section National Conference at Kottayam, Kerala, from 18 to 20 November, which was a great meaningful time of blessing and fellowship for doctors serving all over the country.

Looking ahead, we feel the need to have more active participation from existing members and also new, younger doctors and medical / dental students joining the CMAI network to make the functions of CMAI more alive at the grassroot / regional level. To achieve this, the role of Regional Sectional Secretaries is of utmost importance in planning seminars / workshops in their respective regions for professional as well as spiritual nurture. We should strive to invite more doctors who are in general / private practice and government sectors in addition to those in Christian missions to join the CMAI fellowship.

Our focus will be more in North Indian states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. Towards this, we have a regional meeting happening in Vadodara Gujarat on 9 January and another we plan to have in the Bihar / Jharkhand region during March-April.

In Christ,

The first two are over – in Tamilnadu and Maharashtra (Nagpur, in association with Mure Memorial on 10 & 11 December). The next is planned before February probably in Bangalore. Contact Dr John Thomas ([email protected]) and you can plan to hold one in your region / hospital.

Ms Jancy JohnsonSecretary, Nurses League

[email protected]

Dear Members,

Greetings in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ!

A beautiful year has come to an end. It is time to pause awhile and thank our Lord for all the good things He has showered upon our lives. The Nurses League has experienced His wonderful guidance and blessing throughout the year 2010. May His name be glorified. I request your prayers for greater accomplishments to happen in the realm of Nurses League in this New Year too.

The Lord Jesus Christ invited His disci-ples – “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (NIV) (Matthew 11:28) Here is the wonderful example of sharing the pain. As we have entered this New Year, it would be ideal to examine how much we have lived out this theme in our daily lives.

The 66th National Conference of the Nurses League was held at Believers’ Church Seminary, Tiruvalla, Kerala, from 25 to 27 November 2010. By God’s grace, the whole event became a great blessing for the participants. It was a joy to have 350 delegates from 12 different states. My sincere thanks to all of you for taking pains to join us and make this event a great success.

The MIBE executive meeting was held on 3 December at the MIBE office, Nagpur.

Hope the festive mood of Christmas gladdened your hearts. Let us continue to have this joy all the time. As Apostle Paul says, let us rejoice in Him all the time. Let us pray that God uses us for His glory more effectively in this New Year.

Wishing you all a happy and blessed New Year.

With prayers and regards,

The 66th National Conference of the Nurses League was held at the Believers Church Seminary, Tiruvalla, Kerala, from 25 to 27 November 2010 and 350 delegates from 12 different states participated. The conference started on 25 November at 8 am with the worship service led by the students of the College of Nursing, Tiruvalla Medical Mission, and the morning devotion was led by Mr P L Johnson in which he covered topics like true education and false education, Jesus the greatest teacher and also our calling to be a blessing for others.

At 9.30 am, the inauguration programme began by invoking God’s presence, through an opening prayer by Mr Thomas Mathew and a hymn by TMM Nursing students.

The august gathering was warmly welcomed by Mrs Jancy Johnson, Secretary, Nurses League. The Chief Guest, Most Rev Dr K P Yohannan, Metropolitan of the Believers Church, led the dignitaries in lighting the Kuthuvillaku. This was followed by the Chairperson’s Address by Mrs Shirley David, who introduced the activities of the Nurses League of CMAI.

The address by the Chief Guest touched our hearts as he encouraged nurses to reflect God’s love in their day-to-day work. Dr M C Mathew, the President of CMAI, gave the Nurses League members three seminal foundations for the future of the section – to articulate that nursing is a vocation, promoting the art of nursing and for nursing service to practice holistic healing. A special item of this programme was the release of two nursing books, one by Miss A Kuruvilla and the other by Dr M C Mathew. Mrs Mariamma George, Principal, School of Nursing, proposed the vote of thanks.

After the inauguration programme, Mr Thomas Mathew delivered the Keynote Address on the theme Sharing the Pain. He emphasised the need for a vision for every nurse, the need to be aware of the specific call of a Christian nurse and also the need for genuine commitment.

After that there was delicious fellowship lunch. The afternoon session started with an address by Dr Vijay Aruldas, General Secretary, CMAI, who briefly introduced the activities of CMAI. This was followed by the scientific session on the topic Quality

Report of the 66th National Conference of Nurses LeagueIndicators in Nursing Practice by Mrs Leena Raj, Principal, School of Nursing, Baptist Hospital, Bangalore. This session was chaired by Mrs Selva Titus Chacko, Deputy Dean, College of Nursing, CMC Vellore.

Thereafter, Mrs Mercy John divided the participants into different groups for the home group activities. This was followed by the business session in which the members expressed their suggestions for

future activities of the Nurses League. Simultaneously, there was a special session for the students by Mr P L Johnson during which he emphasised the need for genuine Christian values in one’s life as well as one’s profession. In the evening, there was a Bible quiz conducted by Mrs Jenny along with Mrs Shirley David. The students participated with great enthusiasm.

On the 26th, after the worship and morning devotion, there was a talk on the topic Evidence Based Practice in Nursing Practice by Mr Samuel Fernandes, College of Nursing, Wanless Hospital, Miraj. This was chaired by Mrs Mercy John, Principal, School of Nursing, Bissumcuttack, Orissa. This was followed by a talk by Rev A C Oommen, in which he stressed on identifying the need of the divine calling in the field of nursing. Further, he projected the Christian nurse as the hub of the healing machinery and most importantly as a channel of God’s grace flowing through him / her to the needy world.

At 12 noon, all of us went for a boat ride in the backwaters of Alapuzha which was truly exhilarating. The night was enlivened by the vibrant cultural programme put up by the students. On the 27th, after the devotion, the home groups enjoyed a time of fellowship and prayer followed by the participants performing a brief mime (dumb charades). After that was the valedictory function inaugurated by Miss Kuruvilla and chaired by Mrs Shirley David. Two representatives each from the students and the staff expressed their feelings about the conference. The NL Secretary thanked each and every one.

The conference emcee was Mrs Selva Titus Chacko. The conference ended with the Holy Communion Service, which was led by Rev A C Oommen.

Training Programme in Hospital Management for Hospital Administrators of CHAIMr Stephen Victor, Secretary, Administrators Section, CMAI, was the lead resource person in the training programme for Hospital Administrators of the CHAI (Catholic Health Association of India) network held from 16 to 18 November 2010 at Secunderabad. Twenty-seven participants

from different parts of the country were trained. The topics covered were: the finer aspects of Human Resources Management, Hospital Engineering and Quality Assurance. The idea for this programme took root at the CMAI AGB meeting, when Fr Dr Sebastian, Director General, CHAI, suggested that this workshop be conducted after hearing about workshops that CMAI’s Administrators Section had organised.

Workshop on Bio-Medical Equipment Maintenance - MumbaiA workshop on Bio-medical Equipment Maintenance was held at Hotel Atithi, Mumbai on 29 October 2010. A total of 51 persons (10 from the CMAI-CHAI network and 41 corporate / private health care institutions) attended the workshop. Mr Ranjit Samuel of Columbia Asia Hospitals spoke on General Troubleshooting of Hospital Equipment and Specific Precautions in maintaining hi-tech equipment. Along with other resource persons, Mr Edmond Paul of Wockhardt Hospitals participated in the panel discussion on Major Challenges for a Bio-medical Engineer. Mr Stephen Victor spoke on Annual Maintenance Contract Management. We thank Sr Aquinas, Director, and staff of Holy Family Hospital for their assistance in coordinating and organising the programme.

Dear Members,

May I join with all our colleagues in CMAI to wish you a fabulous second decade of this new millennium. Ten years have flown past so soon after we celebrated the dawn of this 21st Century! May God bless you and your institution with new ideas, abundant resources and pleasant surprises. As we strive to become more and more effective in imparting timely and quality health care, we need to be aware of the importance of Hospital Administration.

During this reporting period, the Administrators Section organised two successful workshops. First, the workshop on Biomedical Equipment Maintenance at Mumbai for which we thank Sr Aquinas, Director, and staff of Holy Family Hospital, Mumbai, for their assistance in coordinating and organising the programme. The second was the training programme in Hospital Management for Hospital Administrators of the Catholic Health Association of India (CHAI). Please refer to separate reports elsewhere in this issue.

The next major upcoming programme is the XXIV Workshop on Hospital and Health Services Management at Bangalore from 31 January to 11 February 2011. These workshops have been extremely beneficial to the participants in discharging their duties related to Hospital Administration. This workshop, which provides training with a Christian perspective, gives an opportunity to strengthen fellowship and share our concerns with delegates from India and other countries. Apart from India, delegates from Africa, Pakistan and Bangladesh have already confirmed their participation. Kindly inform suitable persons to register for this workshop. The details can be downloaded from www.cmai.org

Kindly uphold me in your prayers so that I can be more effective in building up the Administrators Section.

Mainstreaming of HIV and AIDS for Bread for the World PartnersMs Sabath Katrin, Desk Officer for North India of Bread for the World, Stuttgart, visited CMAI on 22 November 2010. She had discussions regarding the work of CMAI and particularly the project to mainstream HIV & AIDS for their partners in North India.

Following this, there was a 2-day workshop on Developing Workplace Policy for the project partners namely ANKUR, VAK, PATH and BUILD. This was held from 25 to 26 November 2010 at Sarvodaya, St Pius College, Mumbai. Three persons from each organisation participated. They discussed the activities that were conducted so far and also made plans for the future. Various components of a workplace policy on HIV & AIDS were discussed and the group drafted a workplace policy on HIV & AIDS, which will be discussed with the management and adapted in their own organisation. Dr Ronald Lalthanmawia, CMAI facilitated the workshop.

World AIDS Day CelebrationOn 1 December 2010, World AIDS Day was observed at CMAI with the theme Light a Lamp, Pledge for Right. The morning devotion reflected this theme. Staff of CMAI shared about the two families adopted by the staff and discussed what more could be done for the family. Dr Ronald Lalthanmawia shared some experience of the partners of the HIV & AIDS projects and reflected from the Bible.

The staff read out a pledge, lit a candle, took it to their respective desks and switched off the electric lights. They remembered those who had lost their lives and showed solidarity and pledged support to those who are affected by the disease so that they could bring hope and light in their own capacity.

Allied Health Professionals

Mr A P BerrySecretary, AHP Section

[email protected]

Dear brothers and sisters in the Lord,

I send you New Year greetings. The psalmist says, “Teach me to count my years.” Our life is in God’s mighty hands. He sustains our lives in this world. We, the Allied Health Professionals, are given another chance to serve our master with love and compassion as our Lord has shown the way. May this year be filled with God’s blessings.

The IGNOU initiatives for degree programme are picking up with the efforts of our course conveners. Now we are in the process of planning for the next set of study material. Students who have already enrolled had their first year exams in the first week of December. The teleconferencing sessions are over for the degree programmes in Medical Records, Medical Laboratory Technology and Radiolologic Imaging. Every student and teacher should be computer literate and access online programmes.

In this New Year, we are planning workshops in all disciplines. I request regional sectional secretaries and individuals to plan and organise workshops in their regions. We will help you with resource persons and extend sufficient logistics and help. The topics may be suggested by you. I request everyone to show interest in the growth of our section in this New Year. I would like to make more institutional visits to have retreats and student nurture programmes, but they may not bear fruit without your solidarity.

Science and technology is fast improving, and if we do not travel at its pace, we may be left behind. So let us go for innovations and try to teach others with zeal.

May the Lord guide and guard us in this year with His blessing in abundance!

Yours in Him,

CMAI News

Dear friends,

Greetings to you in His precious name! We wish you, members of your family and the congregation(s) a happy New Year.

Hope you had a wonderful time praising God for His gift to humankind – that it was a happy time with family and friends and a time of relaxing after tiring carol rounds, Christmas, Watch Night and New Year services. I thank God for providing you and members of the carol group.

We also, here in New Delhi, visited some of our colleagues – it was a joy to join them during the carol rounds. We had a family get-together – singing, sharing time with family members of our colleagues, receiving gifts from the CEO of CMAI and partaking in the fellowship meal.

I believe that most of you will observe the Healing Ministry Week / Sunday from 7 to 13 February on the theme Our World, Our Health (on the environment). I hope you will pray for those of our friends who advocate to keep Mother Earth alive. I hope we will seek God’s guidance in restoring the lost relationship and realise our responsibilities in fulfilling our Creator’s will. Let us continue to value and use resources from God with minimum wastage. Let us be sensitive and keep Mother Earth alive for she is source of our daily bread, though we exploit her. You may also consider using the same theme during the Lenten meditations to bring awareness among members of the congregation(s). My sincere request to all of you is, please pray and support this ministry of CMAI even in the years to come.

As you prepare for the 2011 Lent, pray God’s presence to go with you. Our best wishes to all of you, especially to the children.

The centenary celebrations of Dhamtari Christian Hospital were held from 12 to 14 November 2010. What started as a dispensary in a single room in 1910 is today a 369-bedded hospital. I represented CMAI at the celebrations.

CMAI has been able to expand the Quality Improvement Initiative (QII) and NABH preparations to the NorthEast re-gion. Mr Akilan Arun Kumar, Joseph Eye Hospital Trichy, Ms Neetu Singh, CMAI, and I spent 10 days in Shillong to provide NABH standards’ training to a group of 40 delegates. We held meetings on the NABH process with clinicians and management staff at Bethany Hospital, Nazareth Hos-pital and Dr H Gordon Roberts Hospital, Shillong. We also completed the gap analy-sis based on NABH standards; the reports were sent to the respective hospitals.

NABH review meetings were held at the Madras Medical Mission Hospital, Chennai, Pondicherry Institute of Medi-cal Sciences (PIMS), Pondicherry, CSI Holdsworth Memorial Hospital, Mysore, and Seventh Day Adventist Medical Cen-tre, Bangalore. Mr Sunny Kuruvilla (BBH) also joined us for these review meetings. NABH preparation is more time-consum-ing for documentation and implementing standards, however we are now able to observe the impact on the quality of care in these hospitals.

I made a presentation about the importance of quality and NABH to the staff team and Board members of CSI Hospital, Bangalore. The Board is willing to start NABH preparations at the earliest. I also visited Kothara Community Hospital (TLM) Maharashtra for NABH accredita-tion. Though the hospital is situated in a rural place, it is well managed with good management systems including Electronic Medical Record (EMR).

In continuation of the CEOs Forum meeting, the next meeting for the MP, Chhattisgarh and Gujarat region will be in January 2011.

May the Lord shower His blessings on us in the New Year 2011.
