The greater Ballito region has become a very popular

destination for those who are looking for new beginnings. We are

fairly reliably informed that, on average, forty families move into the area every month. Most of them are looking for an escape from where poor governance and declining service delivery has impacted on their quality of life. This region seems to offer a semblance of what life was like before the decline. Obviously we have our challenges here too, but there is a good community here that makes it possible for us to rise above the general malaise. As a local media guy, this is where I find my inspiration to continue.

The process of starting over is good for you. It keeps you in the groove and relevant and the worst thing I can contemplate is the notion of “retirement” or capitulation to the process of physical and mental atrophy that comes with having nothing important to do.

F. Scott Fitzgerald said: “For what it’s worth: it’s never too late to be whoever you want to be. I hope you live a life you’re proud of, and if you find you’re not, I hope you have the strength to start over again.”

And therein lies the challenge…to live a life you can be proud of.

Mark Caine, author of a Wealthy Mind wrote: “The first step toward success is taken when you refuse to be a captive of the environment in which you first find yourself.” Too true – and a move to Ballito is obviously a good first step in the right direction.

But simply changing locations isn’t

going to do much for you if you are burdened by issues that you carry with you.

“You’ve been criticizing yourself for years and it hasn’t worked. Try accepting yourself and see what happens”. Louise Hay.

I find tons of inspiration from popular wisdom like this and the more I read, the more I am convinced that if we change our perception of how life works, there is no limit to what we can achieve.

Here’s the white-hot truth: if you go bankrupt, you’ll still be okay. If you lose the gig, the lover, the house, you’ll still be okay. If you sing off-key, get beaten by the competition, have your heart broken, get fired…it’s not going to kill you. Ask anyone who’s been through it. So, what if, instead of thinking about solving your whole life, you just think about adding additional good things. One at a time. Just let your pile of good things grow. It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all, in which case you have failed by default.

“…throw roses into the abyss and say: ‘here is my thanks to the monster who didn’t succeed in swallowing me alive.” Nietzsche

June traditionally becomes a ‘quiet’ time

for most schools as students prepare and embark on mid-year exams. To walk the corridors is strangely eerie as usually there is the hustle and bustle of either teachers giving their lessons or students moving about from class to class. Ashton is slightly different as we accommodate two curricula. All our IEB students (with exception to our Matrics and Form 3 and Form 5 Cambridge students) including our Cambridge Form 2 and Form 4 students are currently sitting their mid-year examinations.

The Matrics and Cambridge Form 3 and Form 5 students are receiving maximum contact time as they prepare for Trials towards the end of August. Co-ordinating a complicated timetable takes a tremendous amount of effort from our teachers and students. We take great comfort in the fact that

when we play, we play hard and when we work, we work hard. What is really encouraging is to see our students involved in so many different disciplines in both sport and culture and then to see them knuckle down and be attentive to their studies.

Term 2 has been a very successful term with many highlights of which I would like to mention two. Firstly, the Variety Concert in particular was a display of ‘extraordinary’ talent and exemplified the depth of talent at Ashton. What was encouraging was to see the number of our juniors in Form 1

and 2 shining on the stage. Drama and Music are subjects at our school and both have proved very popular amongst our cultural students. The second highlight is the achievement of the 1st Rugby team who have won 12 out 12 games consecutively. The coaching staff of Sean Temple and Steve Turner has certainly had a tremendous impact on our boys. A good number of teams that we played against this year were teams that beat us convincingly last year.

I believe the game at Kings Park was one of the catalysts for their success and sparked a self-belief in the boys that has taken them through this Rugby season. It must be stated that the majority of our sporting teams have performed well and this term will go down as one of the most successful. I need to clarify that part of the success was not always about winning, but more of the competitive nature of the games.

We all look forward to the mid-year break and wish all our students a wonderful holiday spending quality time with the family. We hope they return to school rested and recharged to take on an even busier Term Three.

The divorce process is often not properly understood by those who are about to go through it. I can provide some

clarity. As with anything, a bit of research

and an understanding of what you are about to get involved in will make the process easier to handle. This is in no way suggesting that understanding the divorce process will make it easy to cope with – it’s an incredibly stressful event – but preparing for what you are about to enter into can help. In this article I provide a very brief overview of the process.

There are typically two types of divorces, the contested or opposed divorce and the uncontested or unopposed. In my experience the latter type of divorce is by far the best and most cost effective for all parties concerned. An uncontested divorce can be finalized in as little as 6 weeks. If a divorce is contested it may take between 2 - 3 years, although most contested divorces eventually do settle before they go on trial. So be sensible - save time, money and reduce the trauma and stress of getting divorced by opting for an uncontested divorce, from the word “go”, if at all possible!

MeDIATIOn In mediation,

an independent third party will work with both sides to try to reach a settlement agreement, and will advise the parties on the various scenarios they could face if the matter goes to court. Choose an Attorney who knows the legal process and has experience in mediation. A mediator does not decide the case and has no authority to make any decision or force any order onto the parties. The decision-making power remains with both spouses and the mediation process is without prejudice. The mediator will guide the parties in making reasonable decisions with regards to such things as the division of the joint estate and the maintenance of minor children.

MeDIATIOn wIll wOrk fOr yOu If • youandyourpartneragreethatyoucan negotiate in a fair and equitable manner (even if you are unable to communicate sensibly as the mediator will facilitate communication);• children are involved and you would like to draft a parenting plan;

• you wish to save money in terms of a contested divorce; and/or• you want your differences to be resolved as soon as possible.

Mediation is a well-established form of dispute resolution and is frequently chosen by couples to resolve

as many if not all of their disputes prior to obtaining their divorce. It is effective in terms of both time and money and allows parties to be directly involved in reaching a settlement that is specifically tailored to their needs. Mediation can be entered into regardless of whether or not there are children involved. Every aspect of a divorce can be mediated, from the division of assets to the question of maintenance. Parties can agree to mediation before or after legal action has been instituted.

It is important to make use of an Attorney as a mediator so that the couple can rest assured that their rights not only in terms of the ante-nuptial agreement are being protected, but also in terms of current legislation such as the Children’s Act. It is difficult to anticipate how many sessions will be required before mediation can be terminated, because it depends on the complexity of the divorce and the couple’s readiness to negotiate. Mediation is currently a voluntary option but one that I strongly recommend.

The sport of hockey at CrawfordSchools north Coast is set for major improvement, with the news of the much-

anticipated installation of their hockey AstroTurf.

The AstroTurf will not only be an asset to the campus but also a benefit to all hockey players and surrounding clubs in the community. “It has been a long-pending dream for Crawford North Coast hockey players to have an AstroTurf where they can develop and grow their skills as well as represent their school”, says Kai Petty, College Boys Hockey Coach.

“It will also provide exciting hockey opportunities for players of all ages to become actively involved in the sport”, Blake Goosen, College Girls Hockey Coach.

The AstroTurf will be a water based field that has FIH Global classification for Olympic and international tournaments. “A water based hockey pitch provides the best performance and safety characteristics available for the modern game of hockey”, says Petty.

It covers one full-size field (100 x 60 meters) that includes a pitch with a very high density of artificial grass and no sand infill thus providing a

consistent ball roll and bounce. The AstroTurf will also include a lighting fixture for night games and a technical area with state of the art video analysis as well as a small grandstand for spectator viewing.

“The aim for the future is to build on the success of our sporting curriculum and become part of the top ten hockey schools in the province, competing with the top hockey schools in the country”, says Petty. To add to the excitement of this development is the expansion of our boarding facilities. Our athletes are then able to ‘eat, sleep and breath hockey’ whilst having the educational support and the comfort of a ‘home away from home environment’.

The new hockey AstroTurf will be officially opened in the first term of 2016. There will also be special matches during the course of the day with some exciting sportsmanship and VIP appearances.

Looking for entertainment for your toddlers birthday party or play date?

IT is little surprise that African Bank (ABIl)

has been on the lips of most in the investment management industry. Many concerned South

African investors have been nervously trying to ascertain the exposure within their chosen funds, and a collective sigh of relief was felt when most were notified that their exposure, and subsequent financial loss, was negligible. The reserve Bank rescue move didn’t harm either.

But not all investors were so lucky. There were a handful of fund managers whose bold overweight position in the stock was sternly punished and served as an expensive lesson. For those of us viewing the developments from a distance, we have to ask what lessons there are for us to learn. For one, we are reminded that risk is not one dimensional. It is certainly not restricted to market risk, or volatility, which is how much an asset or market goes up or down in any given year. What is highlighted in this instance is concentration risk – having all your eggs (or too much of your money) in one basket.

Concentration risk is often

overlooked and many in this position are reduced to a ‘make or break’ outcome. The problem with this approach is that it ignores the fundamental principle of diversification. In other words, the outcome of your investment is too dependent on the success or failure of one particular asset. A classic example of this is business owners and/or farmers, particularly those who have been successful in their trade or profession, who believe that they “could make more money if they invested money back into their business/farm”. Frequently, this is true. However, the risk is that something unforeseen breaks the cycle and the business/asset is negatively y impacted.

There are many examples of this as the world changes and shapes the way we spend our money. I remember in the early ‘90’s when car phones were all the rage! Those distribution channels may well have experienced some challenges with the introduction of cell phones. What about the pharmacist whose retirement plan was his three highly profitable pharmacies….before legislation on medicine pricing changed and forced him to close his doors? What impact will we see with land redistribution and its potential effect on farmers whose entire wealth is tied up in their land? The scenarios are endless.

The bottom line is, whatever your

personal situation, diversification is an investment fundamental that cannot be ignored in wealth creation. It should be critically considered and intelligently applied. If this is all sounding a bit Greek, perhaps it’s time to engage a financial professional to translate the investment garble and decipher whether any other risks lurk deep within your portfolio.

It is important to believe that every marketplace has a need for compelling products and services. It is up to you to understand the needs of your marketplace and provide solutions.

In general, people in any target market want services that help them experience pleasure and avoid pain. This includes:

•Makemoremoney•Lookgood•Behealthier•Havemoreenergy•Havefun•Win/Beatthecompetition•Getpeaceandquiet

•Reducestressandhassle

Your challenge is to identify the top issues that your target market faces; the areas where they really want help. The closer you can connect to highly emotional, crucial issues, the more successful you will be. In general for business, making money (greed) is the primary motivator, but you don’t have to focus only on greed. What matters is that you can offer your prospects a “primary benefit” (using marketing jargon) that compels them to take action.

Create a product / service for your target market that is better than anything the competition may be offering:

Once you decide what types of information your market will value, the next step is to define a product / service that will be more attractive to them than anything your competition offers. What makes one information product or service better than another? Any of the following:

1. Fast results. The ideal product / service is something that gets people instant, hassle-free results. If you can help them get results faster than your competitors can, you will stand out.

2.Simplicity. People want simple, step-by-step, easy-to-use products / services. They don’t want to work hard to get good information. A great example is the Dummies book series, which packages simple information on a range of subjects.

3.Uniqueness. If you have, can create, or can license, unique information unavailable anywhere else, that will make your product / service more competitive.

4. Endorsements. Endorsements, testimonials, and case studies about the results your products / services get will enormously enhance your credibility.

5.Betterpackaging. Simply packaging your product better than your competition might be all that it takes. A catchy name, beautifully designed product, or unique packaging could make all the difference.

6.Price. Sometimes offering your products / services at a lower price will net you more sales, because more customers can make up for the loss in revenue per product. Other times, offering a higher price will get you more customers, because people tend to equate quality with price when it comes to information products. You should think about different price points, and ultimately test these price points with your prospects.

7. guarantee. If you can offer a money-back, ironclad guarantee that blows away the competition, then that can be enough to gain the trust and credibility of your prospects.

All of the above elements of a product / service (and many more), create the overall user experience. Think hard about the kind of user experience your target market wants - then give it to them.

BALLITO

Page 10: Life and style issue12

IT’S been just six months since we hit the button and started broadcasting to Ballito and since then, so much has happened that

it is hard to believe the station is still in its infancy.

As with any radio station, listener figures are an important factor in determining where advertisers will choose to spend their money and without advertising we couldn’t afford to continue broadcasting. So we decided to put some figures together based on how many people we have been potentially reached through our various marketing initiatives and this is how it looks.

We have used as a basis for calculation, statistics from the Ballito

Lifestyle Centre where we are located and stream via speakers through the centre. In addition we use our print circulation, readership and online streaming figures to augment our radio marketing reach.

In this way we come to a combined total of 785 015 people who have heard about and hopefully tuned in to or streamed our radio station each month.

Obviously these figures could be totally arbitrary and I am sure that our media competitors will dismiss them as fantasy, but what no one can deny are the results of a recent independent experiment to test the effectiveness of this new medium.

A case study was conducted by

a leading supermarket in Ballito to determine the efficacy of local radio advertising through this new medium.

They ran a five day promotion on radio life & Style 88.0fM, from 20 – 24 May 2015, where they discounted prices on various items to gauge the reach of the radio station.

The results were quite simply extraordinary.

All previous sales records were shattered during this campaign… and it is now apparent to all concerned that a new age has dawned.

It’s an exciting opportunity to combine targeted print, online and radio campaigns to reach the exclusive middle and upper LSM consumer in

AllergIeS are common, yes, but they are not normal. Suffering with

allergies is not something that you have to endure. There is hope! Allergies can be easily treated, easily managed and even totally eliminated if you just know how.

First, let us understand what an allergy is exactly...An allergy is an adverse immune system reaction

to a normally benign substance. This hypersensitivity then causes the body to respond by producing symptoms (sneezing, itching, wheezing, etc). An allergy therefore, is not an illness, rather, it is a red flag that your body needs attention.

the 2 most common causes of allergies1. leaky gut: Also known as intestinal permeability,

is a condition in which the lining of the digestive tract becomes inflamed and porous, allowing undigested foods, bacteria, yeasts, and other toxins into the bloodstream. The immune system launches an attack on these toxins, which creates inflammation throughout the body. For many people, this happens every time they eat. This inflammation manifests in different ways for different people. It can cause joint pain, skin problems, digestive issues, autoimmune disease, impaired brain function, fatigue, chronic pain, and…allergies.

2. stress: Chronic stress depresses the immune system. It also weakens and inflames the digestive tract, causing leaky gut and allergies. It is important to note that 'stress' doesn’t just come from a stressful lifestyle or lack of sleep (although those certainly play a role). Eating a diet high in sugar and processed foods is stressful to the body, as is an unmanaged autoimmune disease, hormones that are out of whack, or even over-exercising.

address the underlying issueThe key to allergy elimination is to determine and

address the underlying cause of your allergies - be it stress, leaky gut or perhaps something else. Then, with the appropriate treatment, you CAN change your response to allergens permanently i.e. never suffer with allergies again!

seek holistic treatment Everyone is different and should be treated as

such. A holistic approach to health understands that an allergy is a susceptibility that an individual has based on a multitude of factors unique to them. Your trusted health care provider therefore should be able to help you identify the root cause of your allergies as well as provide you with an individualized treatment plan: A plan that takes into consideration diet, digestive function, hormones, immune system health, genetics, and lifestyle.

In the meantime, here a few general recommendations that will benefit all allergy sufferers;

diet and lifestyle recommendationsEat REAL food. Eat whole food that is fresh, comes

from local farms and small markets, food that is unprocessed, unpackaged, nutrient dense, organic and in its natural form.

Cut the CRAP. i.e. caffeine, refined sugar, alcohol and processed food - these are all inflammatory foods. It is also a good idea to eliminate other problematic food groups such as gluten (wheat and grains), dairy, eggs and legumes.

Cook your meals at home and prepare food from scratch. Trust me, the time and effort will be worth it!

Use the whole animal. Make mineral-rich broths from the bones, render the fat for cooking, and eat everything including the nutrient-dense organ meats.

Eat mindfully. Eat real food but only when you are truly hungry, according to your body's needs and

cravings. Fad diets, food marketing, calorie counting, food rules and other detrimental dieting habits just add more

stress to our lives and can potentially impair metabolism.

Go natural wherever

possible. Use medication only if

absolutely necessary and save the doctor visits for real illnesses or accidental injuries. If you get a fever - wait it out, if you feel sick - drink soups and broths and get lots of rest. Be patient and trust in your body’s natural healing process.

Spend lots of time outside. We live in a beautiful world so enjoy it. Take your shoes off, move your body, swim in the ocean, climb trees and soak up the sun. Mother nature is the original play-station so play!

Enjoy life. Don’t overcomplicate things. Do the things you love with the people you love. Invest in your mental, physical and spiritual well-being.

Uh... and what do these recommendations have to do with allergies you may wonder!? Health is holistic. It is the result of a good diet and balanced lifestyle. A truly healthy person simply will not suffer from allergies.

Beneficial supplementsThe following 5 nutrients are

our top choices to help eliminate allergies once and for all;

VITAMIn C significantly reduces histamine in the blood, so it’s a great idea to take for allergies.

QuerCeTIn is a naturally occurring flavanoid that has potent histamine-lowering and anti-inflammatory properties.

VITAMIn D is the one nutrient that most people don’t get enough of. Deficiency severely impairs immunity, increases inflammation and exacerbates allergies. Get your levels tested and supplement appropriately.

MSM is a powerful anti-inflammatory that provides natural relief from pain caused by allergies (without the drowsy side-effects)

PrOBIOTICS play a large role in immune function. When the bad bacteria overwhelm the good, inflammation and allergies result. Leaky gut repair includes nurturing your beneficial bacteria with probiotics and fermented foods to improve allergy symptoms.

final points: Allergies are not normal if our bodies are healthy. Therefore, understand what's causing your allergies, treat

appropriately then go back

to basics: Eat a good diet, live a balanced lifestyle and use the correct supplementation to support total body health!

is a rugged utility vehicle that makes the Land Rover seem like a Noddy car. The design has become inadequate through incorrect use as we adapt to an increasingly motionless lifestyle. Good feet require correct placing of knees and hips and vice versa. knees and hips are subjected to grinding pressure due to weak backs and everted feet. If it looks sick it is sick! Are you wobbling, weak, drooping, twisted, off balance, limping, bent, stiff and frozen?

The diagnosis of what you see with your own eyes – the visible distortions of an elevated shoulder, rotated hip, misaligned knee or jutting chin should never be overlooked. Seeing is believing – without vertical and horizontal alignment the scaffolding is beginning to collapse.

Focus on the plumb line – is one side of your body doing something decidedly different to the other half? Being pain free does not mean you have a healthy normal musculoskeletal system. Many people have degenerative or bulging spinal discs and it is accepted as a normal part of the aging process. Bulging discs are neVer normal and are symptomatic of musculoskeletal disorder. This will compromise the spines ability to flex, rotate and bear weight. The cure? MOTIOn! Get into those muscles and joints! Compensating muscles take the

9. STrOng POSTure. There is more to posture than pulling your shoulders back or walking around with a book on your head. Do strong posture exercises to improve your balance, alignment and motion.
