"Lie down, Red Hugh, lie down.

Just lie down, now!" Says me.

"Not now! Not ever, lad,Not till Ireland's free!"

    "But they're soldiers behind us

In hot pursuit? Red Hugh, you see?""Ah, but I've the spirit of the Gael

Deep inside to keep us Free!" says he.

"Lie down, Red Hugh, lie down.

They've your castle under siege! The invaders want our lands

    Your whole country is besieged!"

"Lie down, Red Hugh, lie down!"

As his doctor, was my stern advice.

"Your prison escape was costly. You could still die from the cold and ice."You must rest, while others fight!

"Give me my sword and shield.Says Red Hugh. Play again the harp!

These murderers must be drive out,

We will make it swift and sharp."

Then on to the Rock of Doone

The White Wand was waved thrice,To restore the ancient throne of the O'Donnell's

For the Holy Trinity, left and then right.

Now began the Nine Years War

    When England's armies were shamed

By Red Hugh , O'Neill and Eoiny O'Moore,

And Ireland, and the Irish, gained.

"Victory lies not in senseless armor,"

Said O'Neill at the battle of yellow Ford.

"But in living and courageous souls"Let us win now the Nine Years War!"

He heard the prophecy of Berchan,

And the vision from nine centuries before

That there the brave men of Erin

Would defeat the British in a war.

But the British had more money and men,

And counterattacked with fury in 1601,When a council of war was held in Ulster,

It was Red Hugh sent to Spain for the gun.

He petitioned the King of Spain

Everyday to give him more guns and men,

Until a poison was put in his food,And he was buried far from home in the end.

"Lie down, Red Hugh, lie down,

Just lie down, now! Says me.Not yet! Says Red Hugh, Not yet!

Not when over Irish soil foreigners reign!"

"Tell the Irish all over the world,

The spirit of Red Hugh will never lie down,

Until no lands of my father's fathersNo longer lie under a British crown."

"For surely in death my spirit

Still stands up for the Ireland to beAnd for those who join my journey

We'll stand together when Ireland's free."

"Lie down, Red Hugh, lie down,

Just lie down, now! Says me.

    Not now! Not ever, lad,

    Not till Ireland's free!

Look again in these British papers,

Says Red Hugh's spirit centuries after his reign,

Unbeknownst to me the lion's poisonAnd treachery quickly entered my veins!

    Three hundred years after

Red Hugh's alleged "natural causes" death,

In British State Papers was found that Carew,

With Mountjoy's approval, paid for that death.

I lived once when all Ireland was free,

And in battle saw her best stand tall,I've come back to remind you, then as now,

Compromise and treachery are our fall.

As once we listened to the prophet Berchan,

And saw sweet Erin wealthy and free

Now hear the prophecy and Red Hugh,Ireland will soon be free!
