PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

Reports and Interviews Yes, we will have a revised type of report for Semester 1, but due to the online nature of our work during COVID-19 restrictions, you have to understand a full semester report is not possible as there hasn’t been enough face to face time to do critical instructional type lessons. The lessons the students experienced online had to be topics or concepts they had already mastered, to give them a chance of completing it independently, without bothering Mum or Dad too much. Our reports, like most school across NSW, will not feature an achievement scale (ie. A – Outstanding, B – High, C – Sound, D – Basic, E – Limited) but will report on the outcomes and indicators covered in

English and Maths, with a revised scale of Usually, Sometimes and Rarely. This will be coupled with the all important Effort rating, work habits, social development and a general comment. The attendance will be represented by the days the children have had to attend school full time (excluding the COVID-19 period). The reports are being written now and will be due into me on Monday 22 June from the classroom teachers and assistant principals. The reports will be sent out to you (the parents) on Tuesday 30 June, in a large, white A4 envelope. The reports contain lots of information about your child’s performance so far, and what they could do to improve their work before the end of the year. We will hold parent / teacher interviews over

Zoom (not 3 way interviews) on the evenings of Tuesday 30 June, Wednesday 1 July and Thursday 2 July. The interviews will be 10 minutes long. You will be sent a link to book your interviews on ‘School Interviews’ and shortly thereafter, you will receive your time and Zoom link to log into on your particular night. Still being under COVID-19 restrictions, this is the safest way in which we can do this. It is important to remind you that interviews are of a 10-minute duration. Please try not to go over this time as there will be other parents dialling into the Zoom link. If you do not feel you can cover everything in the 10 minutes, you are encouraged to set another mutually convenient time to discuss your child’s report with your teacher. “Prime 2” Award Unfortunately, with the COVID-19 situation, there will be no Prime 2 awards handed out for the Semester 1 report. The good news is that we will have a full reporting period for the Semester 2 report and of course, the Prime 2 award will be back on offer then.

Reports – a very important document Your child’s report, half yearly or yearly, are very important documents. The time and effort our staff put into this resource for you to see how your child is faring at school, is phenomenal. That’s why when I hear that parents have lost them or they require another copy of them because they can’t find the report, I get a little annoyed. Please ensure that your reports are kept in a safe place where you can regularly go back to see how much your child has progressed in their time at the school.

School Uniforms The parent community of Lidcombe Public School has determined that all students attending Lidcombe PS should wear school uniform. The principal and school staff fully support and endorse this decision and encourage all students to comply with this expectation. All students are expected to exhibit good grooming and personal cleanliness. Offensive slogans on clothing or belongings will not be permitted. At the end of 2011, we officially took over control of the Uniform Shop from Lowes and now parents can buy the uniform from our school. It is located at Lidbury Hall (near Blocks A and C) however, at present the Uniform Shop is closed due to COVID-19 restrictions and all orders should be placed through the office. Now that winter has arrived, it is important that the school uniform is still worn. I understand that it is colder and other jackets might start to appear. That is fine, as long as your child is wearing the school jacket or school jumper underneath, not just the colourful

jacket on top of the polo shirt. There have been some other ‘variations’ of uniform as well. Black jumpers are creeping in – no, black long tights underneath shorts – no, wear long grey pants if you are cold, beanies – no, wear the school hat or a blue beanie. If I continue to see these items of clothing that aren’t school uniforms, I will be contacting parents directly. Please ensure the students are in the correct uniform. I would like to focus on the wearing of our school hat and black school shoes. There seems to be a quite a few students who tend to wear any hat to school, and when I look out over the school population at a morning assembly, it doesn’t look good. With the wearing of black school shoes, these can be black sneakers also, whichever of the two they are more comfortable in, but they must be black.

Powerful Quotes Over the last couple of months, the Executive and I have been exploring unique ways to inspire our students. Part of that was to have Signpac (a signage company) professionally make and install powerful quotes around the whole school. I think they look fantastic ! Hopefully, restrictions will be over soon so I can take our parents on a tour of the new buildings, but also around to see what we are doing to inspire our wonderful students !

Page 3: Lidcombe 2141 · If mobile phones are to be brought to school by students, they need to be left at the office during school time and picked after school at 3pm. Parents and carers

Mobile Phones While it is accepted that mobile phones play an important part in modern life and communications, it is important that all staff, students and parents accept that their use during class time and on various other occasions at school is inappropriate.

If mobile phones are to be brought to school by students, they need to be left at the office during school time and picked after school at 3pm. Parents and carers must give written permission via the form provided by the school for students to bring mobile phones/apple watches etc to school. The school will not accept any responsibility for a mobile phone being lost or damaged.

Opportunity Class (OC) Applications Parents with children seeking placement in an opportunity class in Year 5 in 2021 are required to submit an application form ONLINE which opened on Tuesday 9 June 2020, and will close on Friday 26 June 2020. Generally students are in Year 4 in 2020 when applying for Year 5 entry in 2021. Intention notes were sent home previously with year 4 students.

Parents seeking opportunity class placement for students in 2021 will be able to apply for up to two schools of their choice. It is expected that parents will make appropriate decisions when choosing a school. Parents are strongly encouraged to give careful consideration to the time taken and modes of transport involved when choosing a school with an opportunity class. The OC test itself will be conducted on Wednesday 16 September 2020 (Term 3).

To apply online (after 9 June), use this link: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5 Just a reminder The earliest time students should arrive at school is 8.30am. Any earlier than this means that I can’t guarantee their safety as a teacher will not be on the playground to supervise students until 8.30am. Please ensure your children arrive no earlier than 8.30am for their safety’s sake.

School Interviews For the half yearly Parent/Teacher Interviews, we will be employing the same technology used last year, through the School Interview website, to arrange our interview bookings. The website is very simple to use and you will be able to book school interviews for the times that suit you. The notes should come home today with the code that you will simply enter the event in and press "Go". The website will then guide you through three simple steps, and moments later you'll get an email confirming your bookings. Once booked,

Page 4: Lidcombe 2141 · If mobile phones are to be brought to school by students, they need to be left at the office during school time and picked after school at 3pm. Parents and carers

we will then send you a Zoom link to access when your interview time arrives.

Parking – PLEASE READ THIS !!! Unfortunately, I must stress this particular point again, but in any case our new Kindergarten mums and dads might not be aware of this either. The car parking facilities (the Staff car park at end of Mills Street and the two located off Doodson Ave) must not be used by parents or carers to park in or walk through, particularly at the moment when no parents are allowed on site due to the COVID-19 Phase 3 restrictions – believe it or not, one or two parents are still forcing their way onto the grounds !!!! People have even been seen to let children out of the car whilst on the pedestrian crossing or out of the right hand side of the car, or just parking in the middle of the road! With parking rangers coming out just about everyday, that could actually end up being a very expensive mistake! Please ensure you drop your child(ren) off outside the school in a safe manner or walk you children to and from school using the pedestrian access points, not through the car park. It is just not fair to the parents who do the right thing all the time that other parents (only very few) think they are more entitled than others and therefore, break the rules. We now have a dedicated police officer appointed to oversee this situation, so if you are doing the wrong thing, you will be fined ! I would really appreciate your assistance in this matter.

Sensational work ! My most favourite time of the week is any time students visit me with tremendous work. Lately, I’ve been flooded with outstanding poems by Stage 2. They are all doing a wonderful job and it is fantastic to see that not only are they writing great poems, they are all very excited about their writing process.

Logan and Hannah with Cinquain poems

Siyona and Harsimrat with Cinquain poems

Gisele and Rafa with Cinquain poems

Canteen is open for business The canteen has been open for the last few weeks, but I wanted to make this clear as the lunch orders haven’t been as frequent as they once were. Our ladies do a superb job and given the job uncertainty and business insecurity of COVID-19, I think we need to support their business so it continues to thrive and of course, always be a service to our students and community.

Platinum Award Ceremony Being Green suggests that your child is behaving very well and is doing what our teachers expect of them in the classroom and the playground. These awards have been running for over 4 years now. In our ceremony last Tuesday 9 June that was simulcast on Zoom and Facebook Live, these wonderful people received Platinum Awards: Jeeny Kim 4L , Kianna Rabago 3B, Yacoub Aitaider K/6S, Liza Ly 5B, David Chan 5B, Aras Gundogdu 5B, Luke Nguyen 2C, Ecrin Calayan 6Q, Sakura Nutsford-

Yoshikawa 3M, Vincent Huang 3A, Bethany Tran 3A, Jessica Lin 3A, Nathan Li 4L, Joshua Song 4C, Sky Chen 3B, Jessica Lee 5K and Hidy Chen 5/6A. We would like to do something similar in Week 10, but naturally, we will keep you posted on that.

Challenge2bfit and STEM classes Also because of COVID-19, we are unable to do Challenge2bfit, but Dance2bfit will return in Term 3 and Kindergarten along with Stage 2 and K-6E can get the best out of that physical activity experience then. Stage 1 are still doing STEM this term and Matt Gillard from Sammat Education has been wonderful, organising numerous Zoom sessions, making sure we have all the STEM equipment we need, and the Stage 1 students are loving it !!!

Student Representative Council Every year we select representatives from each class (years 2 to 6) to form a student representative council (SRC). This group performs a very important function within our school in organising charity fundraisers and making suggestions about the school playgrounds or facilities to me, which I really appreciate. Student voice is valued at Lidcombe PS and I congratulate each one of these students for being selected by their class mates to represent them. I look forward to working with them all, as well as our School Leadership Group, Miss Hendy and Miss Chan.

Premier’s Sporting Challenge The Challenge includes a range of initiatives with one common purpose - to have more students, more active, more of the time! The Premier's Sporting Challenge aims to engage young people in sport and physical activity and encourages them to lead healthy, active lifestyles. Sport plays an important role in developing regular physical activity, provides positive health outcomes and is a fun and healthy way to connect with your local community. We invite students to take up the Challenge - and take the path to a healthier life. Students can strive for the Bronze Award (210 minutes a week or 30 minutes a day), Silver Award (315 minutes a week or 45 minutes a day), Gold Award (420 minutes a week or 60 minutes a day) and Diamond Award (560 minutes a week or 80 minutes a day). Students in

Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 only have to colour in a picture to register that they had been physically active for the day. For our school, we will start to collect how many minutes we have been active for (inside and outside of school) from Week 1 of Term 3 (because of the COVID-19 situation). We hope to replicate the success of last year by attaining a DIAMOND AWARD again. Even the staff will be participating in the staff challenge – we will let you know the details of our end of year event very soon! (More details later). Get out there boys and girls and get active!

SCHOOL TIMES

Students MUST NOT arrive at school before 8:30 am and must leave promptly at 3:00 pm

Parents are reminded that school supervision exists between 8:30 am and 3:00 pm. A Before and After School Care facility is provided on the school site for parents needing child minding. Contact 0401680686 after school hours for further details.

Leaving students unsupervised on school grounds has legal implications for both the school and parents.

Access to the school is only possible via the pedestrian gate near the sandpit (Mills Street) during school hours. All visitors must report to the school office. Unauthorised persons on school premises are considered to be trespassing and will be reported to the police.

SMOKING IS PROHIBITED ON SCHOOL PREMISES

Did you know???

For the safety of all students, toddlers and adults, please do not bring dogs into the school grounds, even on leashes. Some children have a genuine fear and it can be quite distressing for them as well as for parents, particularly those with very young children. Thank you for your support in this matter.

Under the Companion Animals Act

1998 No 87 (14.1.e), dogs are

prohibited in school grounds,

(whether or not they are leashed

or otherwise controlled).

Are you missing a jumper or jacket that’s not school issue and doesn’t have name on it – see us in the office. If these items aren’t collected by the end of term they will go in the bin.

To celebrate all those students who have stayed green during Term 2 we will be having a

CRAZY HAIR/CRAZY SOCKS DAY On Friday 3 July 2020

Children can wear mufti on the day (ie clothes of their choice – no rude slogans, closed in shoes). Children will also receive an ice cream/ice block.

NOTES WILL COME HOME NEXT WEEK TO THOSE CHILDREN WHO ARE GREEN.

________________________________________________________________

We couldn’t have a Mother’s Day Stall this year due to COVID-19 but with everyone back at school we thought why not celebrate all our fabulous mums now

SO on Thursday 2 July we will be having the P & C Mother’s Day Stall. All gifts will be $5 and children will be able to prepay this money. We will send a note home next week with more details.
