License plates and place value

• Collect or make up license plates. – Example 785-wrx 855-pvs

• Assign letters a numerical value– Example A, B,C,D = 1 E,F,G,H =2

• Place these letters and number values into a key, so that students can find the number they will be using to complete the operation.

A = 1 F = 2 L = 3 X = 5

• Set up practice sheets, and license plates (index cards) for students to work with.

•Demonstrate to students how to use license plates and key to solve.

•Demonstrate how to set problem up.

•This can be used to compare numbers value is it is greater than, less than or equal to.

•Students can write out how many 1’s, 10’s , and 100’s in each #.

•In addition students can take the numbers and write out in extended format the value of the number
