Agenda● The hook

– Github survey about Open Source

● The catch

– Results from the LibreOffice survey

● The cooking

– Mangling the data

● It’s served

– Putting all together

The hook

● Quo vadis, LibreOffice

– During the German community meeting we faced the problem that any plan for the future depend on what users expect. So the question came up:

● What’s important to the users?

– While statements on this question are very helpful anyway it would be even better to compare it with other tools...

The hook

● Same questions but with subtitles like

– How important is User Experience for your?Good user experience means functional requirements are covered completely, the program is easy to use, and it is a pleasure to work with it.

– How important is Replicability for you?Anyone can read the source code, understand how a function computes, and use it for their own projects.

– ...

The catch

● Stability, compatibility, and UX first

● Similar pattern

● Trusted producer more relevant

Page 7: LibreOffice: What's important to you?

7

The cooking

● Is the result biased by the operating system?

● Yes:

– Transparency The project permits use, study, and modification of the source code without restriction, and as a normal user you are regularly informed about all aspects

– ReplicabilityAnyone can read the source code, understand how a function computes, and use it for their own projects.

– Costs

– Trusted producer

● Is the result biased by expertise1?

1 Would a colleague or friend ask you how to solve a problem with LibreOffice?

9

The cooking

● Slightly

– Stability Stability means the program functions properly and does not hang or crash on unexpected conditions

– UX

● Is the result biased by braveness? (fresh 38% vs. stable 48%)

Page 10: LibreOffice: What's important to you?

10

Some seasoning

● 50% of the participants use another office tool on a regular basis

● 25% use an online suite “always” or “frequently”

Page 11: LibreOffice: What's important to you?

11

Some seasoning

● Our users are very loyal

Page 12: LibreOffice: What's important to you?

12

● Security, stability and compatibility come first

● Usability is important too(e.g. MUFFIN/Notebookbar it’s often asked for)

● Continuity as a trusted publisher is of high value(e.g. alleged outdated features should remain, online less important in this study)

It’s served
