Workshop Outline

Purpose
• Purpose What library resources available for researching a topic.
Tasks
• Task – Where to search• Task – Construct searches using keywords• Task – Manage search results • Task – Select peer reviewed sources and
distinguishing valid, credible authoritative resources.
Criteria
• You will know you are successful when: You are able to search research databases and find articles relevant to your research.You will know you are successful when you are able to manage research articles found that support your topic.
Requirements
• From off-campus you’ll need a barcode and PIN or your ACE account – Barcode is on the back of your Rebel Card (UNLV
student ID)– If you don’t either a Rebel Card or ACE account

• Start from link on library page• Type in search words that describe your topic
and click on “search”• To see if you can get the entire article click on
the article title to see the abstract page, then click on the “get text” link.
Searching PubMed
Why go through the library?
• Access to journals that we subscribe to – and links to ordering the articles we don’t have.
• Link to databases at http://library.unlv.edu/search/databases/index.html
If the article isn’t available online
• You can use Interlibrary Loan to get an article – it usually takes 24-48 hours and you’ll receive a link to download a pdf
• No cost to you
The Limits feature
• Use the “limit” feature to narrow your results by:– Type of article, e.g. clinical trial– Date– Language– Ages– and much more
Advanced Searching
• Click on the “Advanced” link that is above the search box
Using MESH terms
• Use for a more focused search• They are medical subject headings
