It's your Library survey - prize draw winner

Thank you to all 1,340 people who responded to ourrecent survey on the Library environment. IR studentJenni Muttonen was the lucky winner of a100 Amazon voucher for her participation. Thesurvey yielded some interesting results. Thechange people appreciated most was the Library'slonger opening hours (32.8%), followed by theLibrary Cafe (17.9%) and the self-return system(15.7%). Of the Library's three levels, most peoplepreferred to work on Level 2 (37.9%) and a slightmajority (56%) felt there was no need to introduce aquiet study zone on that Level - "the space works wellas it is." Asked whether we should allow hot and colddrinks everywhere, but restrict ALL food to the Cafeonly, or leave things as they are (hot food in the Cafeonly, cold snacks on Level 2 only, hot and cold drinkson all Levels), a majority 80.6% preferred to leave thefood policy as it was.

Thank you to all who responded. A fuller report isavailable here.

Lighting the Past: rare books cataloguing project launched

The Department of Special Collections is home toa world-class collection of over 200,000 early andrare printed books. Despite best efforts in the past, however, only about a third of these are availablein the Library's online catalogueSAULCAT.Thisleaves many researchers and students unaware ofthe potential resources available to them. On June13 the Library is therefore launching an excitingnew project - Lighting the Past - to see over100,000 records from its rare book collectionsadded to SAULCAT in the next 10 years. With animpressive average of 3,000 research visits peryear to Special Collections, the Department hopesthat increased awareness of its superb resourceswill result in even more calls on its materials. NewRare Books Cataloguer Christine Megowan looksforward to the task!
